What this handout is about...
This handout will explain what a Literature Review is and offer insights into the form and construction of a Literature Review in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences.
Introduction
OK. You've got to write a literature review. You dust off your world literature anthology book, settle down in your Ebert and Roper at the Movies theatre chair with your popcorn and soda in hand, and get ready to issue a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" as you leaf through the pages. "Literature Review" done. Right? Wrong! The "literature" of a literature review refers to any collection of materials on a topic, not necessarily the Great Literary Texts of the World. "Literature" could be anything from a set of government pamphlets on British colonial methods in Africa to scholarly articles on the treatment of a torn ACL. And a review does not necessarily mean that your reader wants you to give your personal opinion on whether or not you liked these sources.
What is a literature review, then?

These publications offer a route map through the vast body of research into education and technology – a field that continues to grow in importance. They give a clear vision of where gaps in our understanding lie, where our knowledge base is weakest and future directions we need to follow to make best use of technology for learning. They have been commissioned from outstanding academic researchers who summarise the key research findings and highlight the most important questions that need to be addressed in learning with technologies. The reports provide jargon-free discussions of the key issues and are written for educators, policy makers and software designers with an interest in identifying the most effective role for ICT in learning. Preparing Scholarly Reviews of the Literature: A Webtorial This web site will teach you how to use research literature from the social sciences in a scholarly and professional manner. It is intended for masters and doctoral degree students in all the social sciences, although particular emphasis is given to the fields addressed by The George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development. This site covers:
  • Searching for research literature efficiently, finding what you need quickly, finding the full text online when available, and avoiding an avalanche of irrelevant references. Hint Your favorite search engine will not find most of the scholarly literature! Assessing individual reports of research literature to determine whether their findings and conclusions should be relied upon or are likely to be misleading. Hint : Some of the research literature on almost every topic is misleading or trivial. Integrating the various studies on a topic to make the best assessments of what is known about the topic, to identify promising future research, to improve conceptual frameworks for research, and to determine the advantages and disadvantages of previously used methodologies. Hint : This isn't easy because the available studies usually exhibit apparent contradictions.

Literature Reviews
Wynne Harlen and Ursula Schlapp, SCRE
In all areas of research, literature reviews are used to inform researchers of the background to research projects and to provide context and ideas for the design of new studies. Policy makers or prospective funders of research also use reviews of the literature to inform themselves of what existing research says in the fields of interest to them. This paper is mainly about reviews written for such purposes. It also looks at techniques developed for reviews which are regarded as research in their own right, which integrate findings of several related studies to answer research questions without collecting new data. In this paper we consider the role of the literature review in the research process, some possible approaches to reviewing the literature, and the main steps and decisions to be taken and justified along the way. We conclude with some suggestions for writing up the findings. THE ROLES OF LITERATURE REVIEWS
The various roles of reviews fall into two main categories:
  • guiding decisions about further research and providing a context for interpreting new findings
  • informing policy and practice, based on existing research.

WELCOME TO THE JIBS RESOURCES HOSTED BY: General information: Resources: Literature Reviews JIBS aims at developing a new resource by making available to a broader public the literature review work that is being done by scholars. The motivation for this service is that literature reviews on one hand are very difficult to get published, because they typically do not convey any new information. On the other hand the literature reviews are in high demand, because they save time for other researchers trying to get an overview of a specific research area in the field of International Business. JIBS therefore offer this opportunity for IB researchers to get literature reviews published on the web. The literature reviews are available for public download in pdf-format. Fax: Literature review papers are reviews of literature on selected topics that appear in many different forms e.g. chapters of PhD dissertations, working papers, research proposals and review essays. All kinds of literature review papers are welcome. However, although taken as parts from other work (e.g. PhD dissertations) the literature review paper should stand for itself. Each literature review should present a broad overview of the state of research and theory within a particular field of international business, show the significance of the contributions to that field, clarify and attempt to resolve ongoing debates pertinent to the issue area, stimulate interdisciplinary discussion and dialogue, and point to interesting prospective avenues for future research.
