Religious Fundamentalism or Fundamentalist Secularism?
[Le Figaro:] [Joseph Ratzinger] (Concerning religious fundamentalism, isn't the rise of secularism in France a reaction in the face of this phenomenon? If you ask me, the rise of fundamentalism is itself provoked, in part at least, by passionate secularism. We're talking about a rejection by this world, which refuses God and the respect of the sacred; which perceives itself as totally autonomous, which does not recognize the laws inborn in the human person and which reconstructs Man according to its own patterns of thought. This loss of a sense of the sacred and of respect of the other provokes a reaction of self-defense in the heart of the Arab and Islamic world. A profound contempt expresses itself there, faced with the loss of the sense of the supernatural which is perceived as a decadence of man. Secularism made absolute is not, therefore, the response to the terrible challenge of fundamentalism. Only a carefully monitored religious sense, in profound union with reason, is able to moderate these radicalisms and to allow us to find an equilibrium in the dialogue between cultures.)

That handout contains a complete student essay on a poem and there are hyperlinks to other sample essays. For questions about subjectivity, telling right from wrong in a paper on literary topics, see "Discerning Right from Wrong in the Garden of Literature." The titles of plays, novels, magazines, newspapers, journals (things that can stand by themselves) are underlined or italicized. Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye don't seem to have much in common at first. If you're using a word processor or you have a fancy typewriter, use italics, but do not use both underlines and italics. (Some instructors have adopted rules about using italics that go back to a time when italics on a word processor could be hard to read, so you should ask your instructor if you can use italics. Underlines are always correct.) The titles of poems, short stories, and articles (things that do not generally stand by themselves) require quotation marks. Robert Frost's "Design" and Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" are compared in an important article, "Comparing Frost to Carver," which appeared in

A Practical Guide To Writing Papers
about Literature Titles
The title of your paper should reflect your thesis or focus and should be more than just the title of the work you are exploring.Titles should be written in conventional type with only the first letters of important words capitalized. Quotation marks, underlining, and large or unusual fonts are inappropriate.
Verb Tense Use the present tense as a base for writing or talking about literature. The text exists here and now, regardless of when it was written or when you read it.
Referring to the Writer When you first refer to a writer, give his or her full name; in subsequent references, use only the writer's last name. Never refer to any writer only by his or her first name; to do so insults and trivializes the writer and the text.
Quotations When quoting prose, incorporate the words into your sentence so that the whole reads smoothly and is grammatically correct. Make minor adjustments by breaking up the quotation with your own words, using brackets to enclose any words or phrases that you have inserted into the quote. Or use several short quotes (one word or phrase) in place of the full-length quotation. Place the Latin word sic in brackets directly after an error in a quotation to signify that the error appears in the original source. Put periods and commas inside quotation marks (except in a citation when you are using MLA parenthetical documentation), colons and semicolons outside quotation marks, and question marks and exclamation points inside quotation marks, unless they apply to the whole sentence.

What makes for a good literature paper?
An argument A debatable thesis statement Like any argument paper you have ever written for a first-year composition course, you must have a specific, detailed thesis statement that reveals your perspective, and, like any good argument, your perspective must be one which is debatable. Examples You would not want to make an argument of this sort: Hamlet is a play about a young man who seeks revenge say A better thesis would be this: Hamlet experiences internal conflict because he is in love with his mother That is debatable, controversial even. The rest of a paper with this argument as its thesis will be an attempt to show, using specific examples from the text and evidence from scholars, (1)
