Medieval literature
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Middle Ages by region Medieval Britain Medieval France Medieval Germany Medieval Italy ... Byzantine Empire by topic Art Literature Poetry Music Architecture Philosophy ... Fortifications Medieval literature is a broad subject, encompassing essentially all written works available in Europe and beyond during the Middle Ages (encompassing the one thousand years from the fall of the Western Roman Empire ca. AD to the beginning of the Florentine Renaissance in the late 15th century). The literature of this time was composed of religious writings as well as secular works. Just as in modern literature, it is a complex and rich field of study, from the utterly sacred to the exuberantly profane , touching all points in-between. Because of the wide range of time and place it is difficult to speak in general terms without oversimplification, and thus the literature is best characterized by its place of origin and/or language, as well as its genre.

    http://www.hut.fi/~vesanto/link.useful/MagicHtmls/magic.html
Guidelines for creating magic-systems for RPGs
Based on the discussion in the loc-l mailinglist autumn 1994. Collected and edited by Juuso Vesanto.
    DESIGNING A NEW MAGIC SYSTEM
This (group of) file(s) is about designing magic systems for role playing games. You can also find some discussion about magic in general. At first, let us define what we mean by magic: "Magic is interacting with something that 'is not from the world' like spirits, demons, essenceflows... in general something supernatural. Usually magic is used to achieve something that cannot be achieved through normal means or to achieve it easier." In some world for example spirits might really be 'from this world', and interacting with them would NOT be magic by our definition. Don't let it bother you. If you find something that disturbs you, trash it. These are not RULES, these are suggestions.
The guidelines constitute of six files:
  • Introduction (short, this file)
  • Steps
  • goes through the steps to create magic systems
  • includes some fine ideas and generic lists
  • Gods
  • gods usually have a special relationship to magic (like enabling it)
  • Magic and the world
  • how would some specific spells effect the world?

    The Hard-Boiled Mystery Novels
    ... from Hammett to Ellroy
This page will serve as a center point for all these incredible writers and their works that the American Hard-Boiled genre of crime and mystery novels gave us all along this century. These writers were inspiration to many foreign writers, making Hard-Boiled novels one of the most important segments of the modern popular literature. Today, whodunits, cosies and tea-party mystery novels are the only mystery writings receiving some attention from the mass public, and it seems that Hard-Boiled novels are no more "fashionable", nor " socially correct" ! So, lame publishers, lukewarm public, and self-inflated intelligentsia are ignoring a lot of writers that are amongst the best of the American literature of the century, and their foreign descendance.
I think it is difficult to give a precise definition for this genre of literature as it will put unnecessary limits to the territory. However, some characteristics are practically always there:
    - central character: strongly individual, tough (against himself or/and the others), not necessarily an achiever

    Marvell's Dialogized Nymph
    Daniel Jaeckle
Why, we ask, should the girl know about
"deodands," which we have to look up? Andrew Marvell's "The Nymph Complaining for the Death of Her Faun" has elicited widely varying commentaries. Interested readers may now decide for themselves which of the literary ancestors proposed by scholars actually inform the poem. Virgil's Aeneid 7, one passage from Ovid's Metamorphoses , another from his Amores , Catullus's lament for Lesbia's sparrow, the Song of Songs, and William Browne's Britannia's Pastorals are among the prominent possibilities. To match this array of literary precursors, there is also an ample assortment of critical interpretations available to readers. Literalist readings of the poem include discussions of the psychology of the Nymph's response to violence, theloss of innocence, the issue of woman's revenge, the dialectic of process versus stasis, and the lesbian love between the Nymph and her fawn. Meanwhile, various allegorical or quasi-allegorical readings find in the poem reference to England's civil wars, the relationship between Mary and Christ, the history of the Church, the mind's forms of contemplation, and, somewhat improbably, the problematics of an illegitimate child.
