Literary Criticism and Theory
More to come, but here's a start on some recommended literary criticism and literary theory books: Intertextuality , by Graham Allen. Transparent Minds: Narrative Modes for Presenting Consciousness in Fiction , by Dorrit Cohn. This is the Story and Discourse: Narrative Structure in Fiction and Film , by Seymour Chatman. This is a core book to any study of narratology, and the discussion of the techniques used in film really helps to highlight what written fiction does well and how it is different from narrative in film. The primary sections are on story events, story existents (fascinating stuff on character here), nonnarrated stories, and covert versus overt narrators. The last two sections contain a lot on the permutations of narration that I can use as material for my seminar (pages 172-226 are particularly useful, although it will take a lot of work to parse.) The examples where he analyses each sentence of a quoted passage are particularly helpful in spotting the nuances of narration. This is an analysis of narration that really pays off further study; I learn something new every time I pick it up. Literary Theory: An Introduction. 2nd Ed.

English 456: C20 Criticism and Theory Course Policies Home Syllabus Policies Course Plan: Rather than try to do exactly what your previous instructor might have done, I will re-shape the course to suit my own interests and knowledge. That way, I need not spend scarce preparation time trying to adapt to the previous syllabus. I mean to include brief selections by authors such as Kant, Marx, Arnold, Nietzsche, and Freud among our readings because they provide vital perspective on later developments in literary criticism and theory. Statement on Methods: Required Materials: Davis, Robert Con and Ronald Schleifer, eds. Contemporary Literary Criticism: Literary and Cultural Studies. 4th edition. New York: Longman, 1998. English 456 Packets on 2-hour reserve at the library. Two copies of the first packet are now on reserve; the second will become available when needed. These folders contain readings from Hazard Adams' Critical Theory Since Plato (New York: Harcourt, 1992) and from other sources. Tell the librarian that you need "English 456 Packet #1" and provide them with my name, Alfred Drake. Study Questions: I will try to provide study questions for each of our authors in advance of class. That is my usual practice, but since I am starting late, it will take me a little time to get up to speed on this task.

Further elaborations developed from notes for a seminar with Professor Albert O. Wlecke of UC Irvine. universe (mimetic) author (expressive) text audience (pragmatic) text (objective) Mimetic: The first theoretical coordinate is the mimetic concern. How does the poem relate to a model of external reality? Terms that fit within this approach are imitation, representation, mimesis, and mirror. Pay attention to metaphors the term "mirror" is the subject of Meyer Abrams' iThe Mirror and the Lamp Pragmatic: Expressive: This third coordinate has to do with the relationship between poet and work. Expressive theory would be the appropriate title here. Biographical criticism is expressive, as is romanticism and Freudian analysis. (See Ernest Jones on Hamlet's Oedipal feelings, which turn out to be none other than Shakespeare's own repressed Oedipal conflicts he attempts, says Jones, to deal with these conflicts by creating Hamlet.) Objective: The fourth coordinate emphasizes the integrity and ontologically sound status of the work itself, without immediate reference to audience, poet, or external reality. Formalists practice this type of criticism. See the "New Criticism" of Cleanth Brooks, John Crowe Ransom, Wimsatt and Beardsley, and others. See also Trotsky's rebuff of the Russian Formalists as counterrevolutionaries.

Studying literary criticism can be a great way to learn more about an author or delve deeper into a work. Literary criticism describes, analyzes or interprets a literary work, usually in essay form.
If you're just curious to learn more about an author or work, online resources may suffice. But if you're working on an academic paper, you'll probably need to go further. The Web can get you started, but your local school or library will probably be your best resource.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The seminar in Criticism and Theory has two closely allied goals: 1) a close study of the HISTORY of literary commentary from Plato to the present; 2) a practical survey of contemporary CRITICAL THEORY AND APPROACHES. The course provides students not only an understanding of the great tradition of literary criticism but a chance to reflect on their own literary, pedagogical, and critical interests.
The History of Literary Criticism: The study of the great tradition of critical commentary, beginning with Plato's attacks on poetry and ending with the writings of some important 20th critics, offers a history in miniature of literature and its sister arts thought the ages. All the big issues are raised: the ethical value of poetry; its impactgood and badon its various audiences; the relation of literature to science, philosophy, history and the other arts; high literary culture vs. low; the material base of aesthetic experience; gender and the question of the otherthe list goes on. In this survey students also find some of the most memorable affirmations of the study of literature.
Critical Approaches: Have you ever been perplexed (or perhaps delighted?) by coming across a particularly ingenious interpretation and wondering where in the world the teacher or writer came up with that reading? Our study of critical approaches will supply some answers to this question and chart the transdisciplinary nature of literary theory.
