Description
The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism has become the indispensable resource for scholars and students of literary theory and discourse. The long-awaited second edition includes 48 new entries and subentries and has been revised throughout, taking account of ten years of rapidly changing scholarship. While concentrating on the explosion of contemporary critical and theoretical works, the Guide presents a comprehensive historical survey of ideas and individuals ranging from Plato and Aristotle to twentieth-century scholars. It includes more than 240 alphabetically arranged entries on critics and theorists, critical schools and movements, and the critical and theoretical innovations of specific countries and historical periods. It also examines developments in other disciplines which have shaped literary theory and criticism. An international, encyclopedic guide to the field's most important figures, schools, and movements, the new edition reflects the state of literary theory and criticism.
Reviews
"Nothing quite matches this in scope and depth. Taken as a whole, the guide provides a synoptic overview of literary theory from a twentieth-century Western point of view. The articles are succinct and pointed."

Hermeneutics in the Ninteenth Century in The Johns Hopkins Guide to literary theory and criticism
http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/hopkins_guide_to_literary_theory/hermeneutics-_1.
Hermeneutics
1. Nineteenth Century
Hermeneutics, as opposed to exegesis, is the theory, rather than the practice, of interpretation. Initially concerned with how we interpret texts, hermeneutics in the nineteenth century becomes the theory of understanding itself, dealing with texts only as one example of the event of understanding between persons. Developed originally as a biblical discipline, it begins with the problem of a distance between text and reader that renders meaning opaque. But beginning in the late eighteenth century, when Johann Gottfried Herder introduces an awareness of cultural relativism, and when the expansion of hermeneutics to the study of secular scriptures changes the understanding not only of the classics but also of the Bible as text, this distance comes to be seen in cultural and historical rather than theological terms. Despite the impediment of cultural and historical differences between author and reader, nineteenth-century hermeneutics often has as an ideal the recovery of the text's "true" meaning. Twentieth-century theorists see such differences as constitutive of a text whose meaning is culturally variable. However, we must be wary of drawing too rigid a line between Romantic and modern hermeneutics, not only because the notion of a fixed meaning still has adherents today but also because many of the ideas of such major contemporary theorists as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur are explicitly or embryonically present in their precursors.

Wecome to the EServer Cultural Studies and Critical Theory Collection. Cultural studies and critical theory combine sociology, literary theory, film/video studies, and cultural anthropology to study cultural phenomena in industrial societies. Cultural studies researchers often concentrate on how a particular phenomenon relates to matters of ideology, race, social class, and/or gender. Cultural studies concerns itself with the meaning and practices of everyday life. Cultural practices comprise the ways people do particular things (such as watching television, or eating out) in a given culture. Particular meanings attach to the ways people in particular cultures do things.
