Readability Test
Juicy Studio's readability test analyses a Web page using the Gunning Fog, Flesch Reading Ease, and Flesch-Kincaid reading level algorithms. Reading level algorithms only provide kind of a rough sense of how readable a piece of text is, but, still, this tool should provide some guidance in determining whether a site is appropriate for lower literacy levels. Promoting information access and literacy for all. September 15, 2005 Carnival of the Infosciences #6 And before I try to take advantage of my son's all-too-rare nighttime sleepiness, let me steer you in the direction of the wonderful Carnival of the Infosciences #6 , hosted by Mark Lindner over at ...the thoughts are broken... Thanks to Mark for hosting. The next host is Mike Beccaria over at Mike's Musings . I've seen some good stuff this week, so I expect you to send your best to Mike via his contact form . Remember, submissions are due by Sunday at 6 PM Eastern time. Comments? Posted by Greg at 10:12 PM
A public reading of sorts In an earlier episode of the audio edition, I mentioned LibriVox , a distributed effort to record audiobooks of material in the public domain. My time to participate has come and I contributed a reading of Chapter 6 of Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent . I only ran through it once...and it shows. I'd hoped to re-record the chapter, but fatherhood calls. Anyway, I think I'll do better with my next assignment: the first three chapters of Dostoyevsky's Notes From the Underground If you relish the idea of taking part, think about signing up for the next projects:

Washington's Literacy Coalition
Over the last several years, Washington, D.C. has experienced impressive economic growth. Unfortunately, many D.C. citizens lack the basic skills they need to take advantage of this robust economy. Moreover, many are not able to access the information they need to protect their health, safety or legal rights. And far too many are unable to read to their children. Thankfully, there are over a hundred programs and groups both large and small here in the District working to help our children, youth, and adults improve their literacy skills. However, most of these programs are small community-based organizations with limited resources. That's where D.C. LEARNs comes in. For nearly a decade, we have been Washington's literacy coalition . We work together with our members to raise public awareness of literacy issues, recruit volunteers , and provide the materials, research, training, and technical assistance needed to raise the quality of literacy services available to D.C. residents.

Hunger in the United States
Health Consequences of Hunger

National Statistics
Hunger Studies Health Consequences of Hunger Hunger and undernutrition contribute to a number of negative health consequences: A joint analysis released by the Center on Hunger and Poverty at Brandeis University and the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) shows how hunger and obesity not only pose separate and distinct health risks, but also can co-exist in the same household. According to FRAC's survey of families living below 185 percent of poverty the Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project (CCHIP) hungry children suffer from two to four times as many individual health problems, such as unwanted weight loss, fatigue, headaches, irritability, inability to concentrate and frequent colds, as low-income children whose families do not experience food shortages. This relationship between hunger and health problems was unaffected by income. In other words, hunger had a strong effect on children's health no matter what the income level of their families. According to CCHIP, hungry children are more likely to be ill and absent from school.

NCSWL Research
The mission of the Center was to improve understanding of how writing is best learned and taughtfrom the early years through adulthood. The Center supported research projects examining how students learn to write, how teachers can best help students who come from an increasing diversity of cultural backgrounds, how writing can be used more effectively across the curriculum, how larger social forces (such as ethnic background, relations with family members, social class, and the neighborhood) affect success in school, how we might develop better ways to assess what students are learning, and how new technologies and new demands in the workplace affect the literacy skills students need to learn. For a summary of the Center's contributions to writing research over the past ten years, see

Definitions of information literacy From a recent Google Glossary search: Definitions for information literacy from the web
  • Information literacy is the ability to identify what information is needed and the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information in solving problems and composing discourse. It encompasses a set of competencies that will provide for survival and success in an information technology environment. The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) report identifies information literacy as one of five essential skills that the workplace will demand of employees of the future. Teaching information literacy involves communicating the power and scope of information as well as explaining how information is organized, how it is retrieved through a variety of access sources and tools, and how to evaluate, organize, and apply information to a variety of problems and situations."
