    Theme: Technology and Listening Comprehension
    Guest Editor: Philip Hubbard Developments in multimedia software and the Web offer a range of new opportunities for learners to develop listening proficiency in the target language. Multimedia programs combine digital audio, graphics, and video with an array of meaning aids and afford a high level of individual control, while the Web makes it possible for easy access to an assortment of listening experiences, including exposure to an unprecedented selection of unfiltered native speaker materials. This special issue of aims at providing a variety of perspectives in this area through research articles and theoretical discussions in the domains of technology-based comprehension, language acquisition, and testing. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
    • a comprehensive literature review of technology and listening comprehension theories or theoretical frameworks for aspects of computer-based listening research on the link between computer-based activities that promote listening comprehension and those that promote language acquisition studies on the utilization of authentic listening materials on the Web studies of the efficacy of technology-based meaning aids (captions, glosses, graphics, translations, etc.) to support comprehension and acquisition

    A MODEL FOR LISTENING AND VIEWING COMPREHENSION IN MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTS Debra Hoven

    University of Queensland
    , Australia ABSTRACT This paper proposes an instructional design model appropriate for humanistic multimedia Computer-Enhanced Language Learning (CELL) in a self-access environment for second language learning through listening and viewing comprehension. The model is grounded in sociocultural theory, and set against a background of research into the complexities of listening and viewing, individual learner differences and learning styles, characteristics of self-directed and autonomous learning, and user-friendly instructional software design. INTRODUCTION
  • Learners can choose either to correct themselves or to be corrected by the computer, the teacher, or peers.
  • Utterances need not be fabricated, though they must still generally be pre-recorded for computer retrieval.
  • Flexibility is limited only by the foresight of the designers of the learning packages or the providers of the learning materials. With the extension of the presence of computers in learning environments to include computer-mediated communications (CMC) such as those possible using electronic mail or the Internet, we must now devise models for computer-enhanced pedagogy to encompass these new interlocutors (Chapelle, 1994). In devising such models, it is important that we keep in mind the theories and findings from mainstream second language (L2) pedagogy and modern theories of second language acquisition (SLA).

    Language: Improved Listening Comprehension (Waupun, WI)
    Improved Listening Comprehension Methodology Student performance was measured using tests from the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement (WJ-III) both before and after Fast ForWord participation. Measures The WJ III Listening Comprehension cluster was used to assess students' listening ability and verbal comprehension. The Listening Comprehension cluster score is a composite based on two subtests: Understanding Directions and Oral Comprehension. The WJ III is a standardized, nationally-normed test. Student performance on this test can be reported in Standard Scores, using a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 (in this metric, scores from 85 to 115 are within the normal range). Implementation The implementation process began with educators receiving preliminary training in a number of areas, including:
    • methods for assessing candidates for participation; selection of appropriate standardized language measures for testing and evaluation;

    Language: Improved Listening Comprehension (Brainerd, MN)
    A group of students in Brainerd School District in Crow Wing County, Minnesota made significant improvements in their language abilities after using the Fast ForWord products. Fast ForWord participants also showed significantly greater improvements in their reading skills than a comparison group. Improved Language Skills Fast ForWord Participants Significantly Outperformed a Comparison Group in Reading Skills Methodology Student language skills were evaluated with the Oral Language Clusters of the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement before and after participation in the Fast ForWord products. A district-wide informal reading assessment was used to measure the reading fluency of the students who used Fast ForWord products, and a comparison group of students. The assessments were administered by school personnel Measures The Oral Expression cluster measures linguistic competency and expressive vocabulary. It includes the Picture Vocabulary and Story Recall subtests. The Institute for the Development of Educational Achievement, in accordance with the Reading First legislation, determined that the Picture Vocabulary subtest of the WJ III is an appropriate outcome assessment for accurately measuring improvement in the vocabulary skills of children in early elementary school. As defined by the Reading First legislation, vocabulary skills are an essential component of early reading.
