The paper was done in China, but the results are relevant to all markets with similar labor rates. In the United States, 60% of server TCO is IT staffing. In China, IT staffing accounts for 27 percent of TCO. IT labor remains a major cost driver in China since less automation and more people are used to manage the same servers when compared to more expensive labor markets. NOLUG AND THE REGIONAL-LOCAL CONCEPT
The Northern Ontario Linux User Group (NOLUG) is a casual group of computer professionals, hackers and hobbists who love their Linux system and can't help but share their adventures (and misadventures) with this fascinating operating system and its almost endless free applications.
NOLUG is free. Anyone is welcome to join and attend meetings, whether they know Linux or not. To get started, we suggest you browse through our web site to learn a little bit more about our club and its unique Regional-Local organizational structure. Should you need more information please send us an e-mail and/or join our mailing list (see Regional LUG page).
NOLUG was formed with the philosophy that there had to be Linux users in Northern Ontario and that there was a need to provide a medium whereby Linux users in small isolated communities could feel part of a vibrant Linux community; could make friends; and could receive technical and moral support. It was felt that in time, Local Linux User Groups (LUGs) would form in the larger cities and towns and that NOLUG would be a cohesive force that would link the small communities to the larger ones thus providing a unique synergy to the Linux movement in Northern Ontario. The vast region combined with lower populations called for a Two-Tier Regional-Local concept that would in the long-term spawn Local Area LUGs and perhaps eventually phase out the need for a Regional LUG.

FAI is a non interactive system to install a Debian linux operating system on a PC cluster.
http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/
FAI (Fully Automatic Installation) for Debian GNU/Linux
FAI is an automated installation tool to install Debian GNU/Linux on a Linux Cluster or a bunch of different hosts. It's similar but better than other tools like kickstart for Red Hat, yast and alice for SuSE, lui from IBM or Jumpstart for SUN Solaris. You can take one or more virgin PCs, turn on the power and after a few minutes Linux is installed, configured and running on the whole cluster, without any interaction necessary. Thus it's a scalable method for installing and updating a Beowulf cluster or a network of workstations unattended with little effort involved. FAI uses the Debian distribution and a collection of shell- and Perl-scripts for the installation process. Changes to the configuration files of the operating system are made by cfengine, shell and Perl scripts. Using FAI, unattended and fully automated OS installations of several Linux clusters were performed. FAI's target group are system administrators who have to install Debian onto one or even hundreds of computers. It's not only a tool for doing a Cluster installation but a general purpose installation tool. It can be used for installing a Beowulf cluster, a rendering farm, a web server farm, or a linux laboratory or a classroom. Even installing a HPC cluster or a GRID and fabric management can be realized by FAI. Large-scale linux networks with different hardware and different installation requirements are easy to establish using FAI and its class concept. Remote OS installations, Linux rollout and mass installation are other topics for FAI.

The Penguin, the Press, and the Marketplace
The viability of Linux as a mainstream operating system
Nicholas Carroll
Posted: February 27, 1999
Annotated: 1/11/2001 Many Linux enthusiasts believe that Linux has grown through technological superiority, and the superior morality of open source software. Unquestionably that's part of it. Yet it is not the end of the story. There are a thousand ways a new idea can fail, few to succeed. The path to market can be narrow and winding. It can also be surprising. More than one Linux user has pulled their head out of an Alpha one fine morning, picked up the local newspaper, and found the penguin sitting smack dab at the top of the Technology section. Why now, they wonder; we've been around awhile. It's a question worth asking, since opportunity doesn't hang around forever. (I use "Linux" in the popular sense, to describe the kernel, libraries, and GUIs packaged in distributions.)

What is emdebian?
Welcome to EmDebian.org. Embedded Debian is a project to make Debian GNU/Linux a mainstream choice for embedded projects. Debian's multiarchitecture support, vendor independence, social contract and huge software base make it an attractive choice for all sorts of systems, but the main distribution is very much aimed at systems with at least desktop resources (big hard discs, plenty of memory). Embedded Debian tries to strip Debian down to be a much smaller system whilst keeping all the good things. It is also an open development environment to cover the multitude of possible ways of building small GNU/Linux systems. Different methodologies are appropriate depending on the resources and functionality of the target system and the development environment. Embedded Debian exists to encourage work on all possible methods that build from Debian's coherent source tree or use its multi-architecture build tools. The common thread is free software and open development. The various development threads are organised as sub-projects. Read more about our technical approach Embedded Debian is currently very much a work-in-progress: plenty of people are already using Debian in their devices and systems, but there is huge potential to make doing this easier. We already have tools and policy, but more work is needed to have full distributions ready to build or download. Anyone with an interest in this area is very welcome to
