1. A Brief History of Linux
Linux is a UNIX-like operating system that is largely (and increasingly) POSIX-compliant It was first written by Linus Torvalds (see The Rampantly Unofficial Linus Torvalds FAQ ), who started in 1991 with the idea of learning the capabilities of an 80386 processor for task switching. Originally named Freax , it was originally hosted using the Minix operating system. Linus' complaints with Minix were that it was written:
  • As an academic/educational OS To be portable (8088, 68000, Sparc) using only the lowest common denominator features.
A pretty good flamewar over this ensued on Usenet involving such luminaries as Linus Torvalds, Andrew Tanembaum,

FSF receives very little funding from corporations or grant-making foundations, but rely on support from individuals like you. Please consider helping the FSF in one of the ways described under Help FSF! (in the navigation bar). We support the FSF's mission to preserve, protect and promote the freedom to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer software, and to defend the rights of Free Software users. We support the freedoms of speech, press, and association on the Internet, the right to use encryption software for private communication , and the right to write software unimpeded by private monopolies.
