A Brief Introduction to Linguistics at Cornell
Language is at the center of almost every human activity. Yet producing and understanding even the simplest of sentences is one of the most complicated tasks that humans perform. Linguistics, the general study of language, attempts to answer the following questions: How do we produce and understand sentences? How is language acquired by children? What are the ways in which the languages of the world are alike and different? How do languages change over time? How does our ability to speak language compare to our other cognitive abilities? How is language used in different social and cultural contexts? Cornell offers full undergraduate and graduate programs in linguistics. The linguistics major , administered through the Department of Linguistics, offers undergraduates the opportunity to explore all facets of linguistics as well as the linguistics of many particular languages and language families. Linguistics offers Freshman Writing Seminars and a number of introductory linguistics courses with no prerequisites for those interested in exploring linguistics. Both a Ph.D. and M.A. are offered at the graduate level through the Graduate Field of Linguistics

What is the Funland? The Linguistic Funland was created in 1994 as a list of various linguistics links on a personal homepage. Then a graduate student in linguistics, the author began to accumulate a list of resources that soon grew out of a single page and into this directory. Here at the Funland, you'll find resources for language teaching and learning, linguistics study, and other miscellaneous resources. If you have a language or linguistics-related site, why not submit it for inclusion! This page maintained by Kristina Pfaff-Harris kristina@linguistic-funland.com

Word Ways is currently edited by Ross Eckler, author of the recent book Making the Alphabet Dance (St. Martin's, 1996), a survey of the field and the many new discoveries made in the last thirty-five years. • THE FINE ARTS To Top What are the fine arts? Art. Music. Theatre. To learn fully to appreciate even one of these is to live a life enriched by beauty, mystery, and magic. To create and share one of these is to give the world a gift of your talent, discipline, and vision. And to teach one of the fine arts, to nurture in the young a love and a spark, is to open up their eyes, ears, and hearts to the beauty they possess. An artist might paint or sculpt, design a magazine or a Web site, teach a child. A musician might perform or compose, manage or promote concerts, repair instruments. A theatre person might star on Broadway, paint sets, sew costumes, launch a community theatre, or write reviews. All of them are doing what they love. All of them are making art possible. The fine arts graduate might do all of this and much more.
