Computational linguistics (CL) is a discipline between linguistics and computer science which is concerned with the computational aspects of the human language faculty. It belongs to the cognitive sciences and overlaps with the field of artificial intelligence (AI) , a branch of computer science aiming at computational models of human cognition. Computational linguistics has applied and theoretical components.
Human language is a most exciting and demanding puzzle.
Theoretical CL takes up issues in theoretical linguistics and cognitive science. It deals with formal theories about the linguistic knowledge that a human needs for generating and understanding language. Today these theories have reached a degree of complexity that can only be managed by employing computers. Computational linguists develop formal models simulating aspects of the human language faculty and implement them as computer programmes. These programmes constitute the basis for the evaluation and further development of the theories. In addition to linguistic theories, findings from cognitive psychology play a major role in simulating linguistic competence. Within psychology, it is mainly the area of

Names of the Planets
English is generally recognized as the international language for professional astronomy. However, the various languages often also have their own words which are used in everyday speech.
English
Sun Mercury Venus ... Pluto Notes
  • For brevity's sake I've omitted the articles commonly used in some languages.
  • The Mandarin and Cantonese words mean (approximately): "The Brightest; Star of Water; Star of Gold; Sphere of Ground (Earth); Sphere of Moon, Star of Fire; Star of Wood; Star of Soil (Dirt); Star of the King of Heaven; Star of the King of the Ocean; Star of the King of Hell". The Korean, Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese lines are pronunciations.
  • Japanese and Korean use simple native words for "Moon" ("tsuki" "dal") but all the other planetary names in these two languages were imported from Chinese and have exactly the same meaning as explained for Mandarin and Cantonese.
  • The Chinese characters at the top of the page are the names of the solar system bodies in the same order as the table. The second set of characters at the top of the page is Hindi. To the right is Arabic script.
  • The apostrophe character in the Latvian line is a diacritical mark for a long vowel, which is a straight line over the letter.

    Linguistics
    What is Linguistics
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It endeavours to answer the questionwhat is language and how is represented in the mind? Linguists focus on describing and explaining language and are not concerned with the prescriptive rules of the language (ie., do not split infinitives). Linguists are not required to know many languages and linguists are not interpreters. The underlying goal of the linguist is to try to discover the universals concerning language. That is, what are the common elements of all languages. The linguist then tries to place these elements in a theoretical framework that will describe all languages and also predict what can not occur in a language. Linguistics is a social science that shares common ground with other social sciences such as psychology, anthropology, sociology and archaeology. It also may influence other disciplines such as english, communication studies and computer science. Linguistics for the most part though can be considered a cognitive science. Along with psychology, philosophy and computer science (AI), linguistics is ultimately concerned with how the human brain functions.

The Artificial Intelligence group in Toronto works in several primary subareas of the field computational linguistics, knowledge representation and reasoning, robotics, planning, computer vision, and machine learning / neural networks. We have 14 full-time faculty members whose research spans these areas and more, and offer over a dozen graduate courses to help students develop and expand their knowledge and expertise.
Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing
    http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/compling/
The subarea of AI concerned with human languages ("natural languages") is computational linguistics. Researchers in this area are interested in developing programs that can "understand" and generate natural language. "Understanding" involves parsing linguistic input, determining its literal and non-literal meaning, and representing the meaning in a computational formalism; generation reverses this process. Research in this area is now being applied in commercial systems for tasks such as automatic or semi-automatic translation from one language to another, information retrieval, and intelligent aids to writers.
