Corpus Linguistics
This page was started as part of Corpus Linguistics (Ling 409), taught by Dr. Michael Barlow . The course focusses on the linguistic analysis of corpora using a variety of available statistical and software tools (such as MicroConcord, MonoConc, ParaConc, Tact, and others). The following corpora are available in the Linguistics Department at Rice: OED, Helsinki corpus, Brown corpus, LOB corpus, Lancaster-Lund corpus, Corpus Collections A and B (OUP), Childes corpus, Rice corpus, and corpora in languages other than English. The students who took the course who have their own hypertext links are: Jeff Allen Anita Judzis Jeffrey Rasch , and Polly Washburn See also the Parallel Corpora page

List of linguists Broadly conceived, linguistics is the scientific study of human language , and a linguist is someone who engages in this study. (Lay people sometimes use the term linguistician , but as Aitchison 2003 points out, this is "too much of a tongue-twister to become generally accepted.")

Dichotomies and language
The study of linguistics can be thought of along three major axes, the endpoints of which are described below:
  • Synchronic and Diachronic - Synchronic study of a language is concerned with its form at a given moment; Diachronic study covers the history of a language (group) and its structural changes over time. Theoretical and applied - Theoretical (or general) linguistics is concerned with frameworks for describing individual languages and theories about universal aspects of language; applied linguistics applies these theories to other fields. Contextual and independent - Contextual linguistics is concerned with how language fits into the world: its social function, how it is acquired, how it is produced and perceived.

    Present-day English Language Home
The Chair in Present-day English Language is concerned with the core areas of linguistic inquiry (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics) as well as with the English language (and languages) in cognitive and interactional linguistic perspective.
The focus is on language in its social context; the preferred approach is (i) discourse rather than sentence-based, (ii) functional, and (iii) oriented towards language in use. Language is considered as a resource for the realization of conversational and interactive tasks. Theories are based on grounded research, i.e. they are generated from, and validated through data, for which large computer corpora of spoken and written language are available.
A laboratory with several work stations has been set up for the transcription and analysis of spoken language data. Sophisticated speech analysis programs are available for the analysis of segmental and suprasegmental phenomena.
