Some of my essays...
An international language - the need, the candidates and the prospects . If you thought English is, and always will be the international language, read on ... Lojban - a logical language . An introduction to Lojban, a constructed language designed for maximum clarity, expressiveness and cultural neutrality. Who is a native speaker and what is it they speak? Less an entry into the TEFL "native speaker" debate, more a philosophical and sociolinguistic look at the concept itself, looking at the terms "language", "dialect", "speech community" and, of course, "native". Future Forms in English. A look at "will" and the futurates. Three and a half views of the language faculty. A look at Chomsky, Bickerton and Lakoff, with a few ideas of my own thrown in. Register in Academic Writing . This is where I get Hallidayan for a change: an analysis of two different academic genres, with some comments about the teaching of academic writing (this is the paper I would have given at the Reading conference on writing if I'd been able to afford the air fare!). I appreciate feedback - if you've read any of these essays, please sign my

ANNOUNCEMENTS Literacy and Language Diversity in the United States , 2nd Edition
With nearly 20% of children and adults in the United States speaking a native language other than English, the need for information about language and literacy skills has never been greater. In this 2nd edition of Literacy and Language Diversity in the United States , the author takes a fresh look at the differences between the literacy performance and educational achievement of language minorities and native speakers of English in this country and the social and educational policy debates that surround literacy in the 21st century. 9. OUTIL (OUT In Linguistics)
Mailing list for GLBT linguists.
http://www-csli.stanford.edu/~zwicky/outil/
What is OUTIL? (OUT In Linguistics)
The list is open to lesbian, gay, bisexual, dyke, queer, homosexual, etc. linguists and their friends. The only requirement is that you be willing to be out to everyone on the list as lgbt(-friendly); it's sort of like wearing a pink triangle. This mailing list is for the use of anyone on it. You are welcome to send invitations, messages, queries, whatever, to anyone on the list. To send a message to EVERYONE on the list, simply mail your message to
obfuscate('copland.udel.edu','outil-list') outil-list copland.udel.edu The mailing list is "closed", which means that new subscribers must be approved by the list maintainer (Kenneth Hyde), but it is not moderated, which means that the maintainer doesn't filter the messages; subscriptions and unsubscriptions will seem almost automatic, in any case. The name OUTIL can be pronounced in English, to rhyme with "shout'll", or in French, anglicized if you wish to something like "ooh, *teal*". Yes, in the latter case it means 'tool'. The organization, if such it can be said to be, is deeply anarchic; nobody is in charge of anything, and anyone is welcome to institute any sort of event. (Kenneth Hyde merely maintains the list.) The only official purposes of the group are to be visible and to gather occasionally to enjoy one another's company; but we are all welcome to engage in any activity we can rouse interest in.

Welcome to the website of the
Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference!
The site displays information about the upcoming conference (Lav Lgs XIII February 10-12, 2006) and archives conference agendas and abstracts from conferences in previous years. So the material you will find here will be helpful to lgbtq language interests in multiple ways.
Presentations during the earliest years of the Lavender Languages Conference were concerned with documenting lgbtq-related linguistic usage more so than theorizing the broader significance of this evidence. In recent years, the focus of conversation has expanded, to ensure that linguistic practices under discussion are situated within social, political, and historic contexts. The ongoing discussions of "talking queer in French," "language and sexual geography," "language and homophobic discourse" and "racializing sexuality and gender” during previous Lav Lgs conference and the discussion on “les-being and doing” which began at Lav Lgs XI are good examples of these struggles and their outcomes.
Unlike the case at the larger professional meetings, Lav Lgs program is organized to facilitate face-to-face conversation and to allow discussion to continue throughout the three-day conference period. Indeed, participants work hard each year to maintain a non-attitude environment at all conference events, thereby enabling conversations between established scholars and those just beginning to explore lavender language interests, and between academics, public intellectuals and community activists. Conflicting points of view about language, gender and sexuality often arise during these discussions, but conference participants are not demeaned or devalued in order to secure such exchange.

Use the search form above to find links and references for anthropology, archaeology, history, linguistics, psychology, sociology and other social sciences. The Anthro.Net database contains thousands of reviewed web sites and bibliographic references. On the World Wide Web there are an estimated 250,000 sites that have content relating to the subject matter of anthropology. Unfortunately an estimated four-fifths contain little useful information. There are tens of thousands of anthropology sites containing redundant links to other pages that are collections of redundant links. Anthro.Net queries a database of over 40,000 pages from reviewed web sites with anthropological content built by users' interests. The system collects the search terms submitted by its users and uses proprietary software to hunt down internet based journal articles, well developed topical sites and bibliographic references for anthropology, archaeology and the other social sciences. Anthro.Net uses a spider or robot program to check for outdated and dead links. The site contains dynamically generated news and anthropology features updated around the clock.
