    September 22, 2005
Pray for the President as he turns his attention to the appointment of a second Supreme Court Justice, asking God for wisdom and help in the process. As President Bush has now begun to consult with several senators, pray for wisdom as they meet, asking God to clearly guide in this vital decision. Pray for President Bush as he welcomes to the White House King Abdullah of Jordan on September 22 to discuss with the King his initiative in promoting moderate Islam, reform in Jordan and other regional issues. Pray for President Bush and members of his team as on September 22 and 23 he visits people in Houston and other cities with large numbers of hurricane Katrina evacuees, praying that his support and presence will bring great encouragement and comfort to workers, evacuees and government officials, and that contacts made will result in many more people being helped. Pray for Frances Fragos Townsend, newly appointed by President Bush to investigate the problems surrounding federal response to Hurricane Katrina, as she now begins the process of looking in to this important matter. Ask God to bring to light everything pertinent, guiding her and those she selects to find key answers that will help our nation respond appropriately in the future.

Buried : Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois Consulting Editor Michael Burlingame, Connecticut College Biography: A Life in Brief Born dirt-poor in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln grew up in frontier Kentucky and Indiana, where he was largely self-educated, with a taste for jokes, hard work, and books. He served for a time as a soldier in the Black Hawk War, taught himself law, and held a seat in the Illinois state legislature as a Whig politician in the 1830s and 1840s. From state politics, he moved to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1847, where he voiced his opposition to the U.S. war with Mexico. In the mid-1850s, Lincoln left the Whig Party to join the new Republican Party. In 1858, he went up against one of the most popular politicians in the nation, Senator Stephen Douglas, in a contest for the U.S. Senate. Lincoln lost that election, but his spectacular performance against Douglas in a series of nationally covered debates made him a contender for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination.

I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what's said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference." The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House by Francis B. "When I first saw it I thought that there were similarities between the handsome, aristocratic, and tastefully groomed young man of the daguerreotype, and my mental image of President Lincoln." Over the years Kaplan researched and assembled materials which cast light on the physical man, Lincoln. Kaplan believed that the best qualified people to analyze the image, and the assembled materials, to consider whether the daguerreotype is of Abraham Lincoln, would be plastic and reconstructive surgeons who work with the human face. The election of Abraham Lincoln made South Carolina 's secession from the United States a foregone conclusion. The state was long waiting for an excuse to secede and unite the southern states against the anti-slavery forces. Upon confirming that the results were final, South Carolina declared "that the Union now subsisting between South Carolina and other states under the name of the 'United States of America' is hereby dissolved." The march to the American Civil War was on.

A young lawyer summed her up in 1840: "the very creature of excitement." All of these attributes marked her life, bringing her both happiness and tragedy. Daughter of Eliza Parker and Robert Smith Todd, pioneer settlers of Kentucky, Mary lost her mother before the age of seven. Her father remarried; and Mary remembered her childhood as "desolate" although she belonged to the aristocracy of Lexington, with high-spirited social life and a sound private education.

    Abraham Lincoln
16th President of the United States I leave you, hoping that the lamp of liberty
will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer
be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.
    Abraham Lincoln
was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County (now LaRue County), Kentucky. He rose from humble origins and less than a year of formal education to become the 16th President of the United States, and one of the great men of American history. Lincoln is credited with saving the Union from disintegration and eliminating slavery in America. Lincoln was elected President on November 6, 1860. He lead the United States through the nation's greatest crisis, the Civil War (1861-1865). He was a master politician, leading by persuasion and humor. The war's end was in sight on March 4, 1865 when Lincoln took his second oath of office as President. In his inaugural address he urged merciful treatment for the defeated rebel states. As Lincoln began his second term he worked tirelessly for the speedy "reconstruction" of the war-torn nation. On the evening of April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assasinated as he watched a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. He was the first American President to be assasinated. Thousands of mourners lined the tracks as his funeral train moved him from Washington to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.
