Abraham Lincoln
US President - 1861-65 Courtesy of the Coast Guard Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life:

Lincoln's Patent
On May 22, 1849, Abraham Lincoln received Patent No. 6469 for a device to lift boats over shoals, an invention which was never manufactured. However, it did make him the only U.S. president to hold a patent. Shown here is his scale model at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Lincoln's Love of Inventions Lincoln displayed a lifelong fascination with mechanical things. William H. Herndon, his law partner, attributed this to his father, saying, "he evinced a decided bent toward machinery or mechanical appliances, a trait he doubtless inherited from his father who was himself something of a mechanic and therefore skilled in the use of tools." Henry Whitney, another lawyer friend of Lincoln's, recalled that "While we were traveling in ante-railway days, on the circuit, and would stop at a farm-house for dinner, Lincoln would improve the leisure in hunting up some farming implement, machine or tool, and he would carefully examine it all over, first generally and then critically;" Lincoln also delivered lectures on discoveries and inventions before he became president. "Man is not the only animal who labors; but he is the only one who

US president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, a Republican, was the 16th president of the USA. He was assassinated in 1865, five days after the surrender of the Confederate forces in the American Civil War.
Civil War
, his chief concern was the preservation of the Union from which the Confederate (southern) slave states had seceded on his election. Lincoln strove to reunite the nation, preserve the federal government, and end slavery. In 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation , which announced the freedom of Confederate slaves. In 1864, when the Union was close to winning the Civil War, he was re-elected. The Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln the following year. Early career
Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky on 12 February 1809. Self-educated, he practised law from 1837 in Springfield, Illinois. He was a member of the state legislature from 1832 to 1842. During that time he was known as Honest Abe.

Thank you all very much. Admiral Kelly, Captain Card, officers and sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans, major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country. In this battle, we have fought for the cause of liberty and for the peace of the world. Our nation and our coalition are proud of this accomplishment, yet it is you, the members of the United States military, who achieved it. Your courage, your willingness to face danger for your country and for each other made this day possible. Because of you our nation is more secure. Abraham Lincoln
By Taylor and Liane We bet most people think they know a lot about Abraham Lincoln. The truth is they don't know half of it. Did you know when Abraham was a kid he got kicked in the head by a horse and was thought to be dead for a few days? Abraham Lincoln was the first President to be born outside of the 13 colonies. He was born in a one-room log cabin on February, 12 1809 on Nolin Creek, Kentucky. Surprisingly, Lincoln didn't go to college. One of his early jobs was postmaster. He taught himself the law and became a lawyer. He married Mary Todd and they had 4 children. Their names were Robert, Edward, William and Thomas (Tad). Out of all their children only Robert lived to be an adult. On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th U.S. President. He is nicknamed Honest Abe because he once said, "I can not tell a lie." He became the first Republican to received 180 of 303 possible electoral votes. He received only 40% of the popular votes. He ran against Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln's Vice President was Hannibal Hamlin but the party chose Andrew Johnson for his second term. His party's main issue was to free the slaves. On January 23, 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that said all slaves were free. He also gave the famous Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 at the dedication of a battlefield cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was such a remarkable speech because it reminded people why the war was being fought. He was the first President to grow a beard while in office. A kid had sent a letter to Abe telling him he should grow a beard so he did!

Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy Two great presidents of the United States Assassinated for the cause of justice by Melvin Sickler
Both Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy were assassinated while they held the high office of President of the United States. Both of these former presidents had also created their own money system to run the United States while they were in office is this just a coincidence?
Why assassinate a President? Why must everything be kept so covered up? What are they trying to hide from the American people?
The facts will speak for themselves. Abraham Lincoln
During the Civil War (from 1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War from the North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was horrified and went away greatly distressed, for he was a man of principle and would not think of plunging his beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.
Eventually President Lincoln was advised to get Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort. Lincoln recognized the great benefits of this issue. At one point hi wrote:
"... (we) gave the people of this Republic the greatest blessing they have ever had - their own paper money to pay their own debts..."

News of President Abraham Lincoln's death on April 15, 1865 came just six days after General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The celebratory atmosphere that had prevailed as the Civil War drew to a close was replaced with one of shock and grief. As the nation mourned its martyred president, the National Lincoln Monument Association dedicated itself to the task of erecting a fitting memorial in Springfield, Illinois, where Lincoln had lived from 1837 to 1861. Construction of the monument, which holds the remains of the Sixteenth President, his wife, and three of their sons, began in 1869. It was dedicated five years later. The Monument Association deeded the tomb and surrounding grounds at Oak Ridge Cemetery to the State of Illinois in 1895, and today the Lincoln Tomb is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
