AN OVERVIEW OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S LIFE Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky . He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln , and he was named for his paternal grandfather. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. Both of Abraham's parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had separated from another church due to opposition to slavery. When Abraham was 7, the family moved to southern Indiana . Abraham had gone to school briefly in Kentucky and did so again in Indiana. He attended school with his older sister, Sarah (his younger brother, Thomas, had died in infancy). In 1818 Nancy Hanks Lincoln died from milk sickness , a disease obtained from drinking the milk of cows which had grazed on poisonous white snakeroot. Thomas Lincoln remarried the next year, and Abraham loved his new stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln . She brought 3 children of her own into the household. As Abraham grew up, he loved to read and preferred learning to working in the fields. This led to a difficult relationship with his father who was just the opposite. Abraham was constantly borrowing books from the neighbors. In 1828 Abraham's sister, who had married Aaron Grigsby in 1826, died during childbirth. Later in the year, Abraham made a flatboat trip to New Orleans. In 1830 the Lincolns moved west to

  • 16th United States President when the country was divided over the issue of equality for all people (Civil War) "Honest Abe" helped free African American slaves
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky. His father was a farmer. When Abe was two years old, the family moved to a new farm and he attended school, walking two miles to the schoolhouse. Five years later, they moved again to the wilderness of Indiana. Lincoln's family lived in a three sided shelter warmed by a fire. They had to walk almost a mile for water. For food, they relied on wildlife that they could trap. In 1818, Lincoln's mother died. His older sister tried to take care of the household. The next year, Lincoln's father returned to Kentucky and brought back a second wife and her three children. More people started moving to the wilderness and Lincoln spent a lot of time at the general store owned by James Gentry. He and Gentry's son, Allen, took a flatboat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. This was the first time, Lincoln had been in a big city. Once again, Lincoln's father moved his family. This time they built a cabin in Illinois. When illness forced his father to move again, Lincoln stayed behind and took a load of produce downriver to New Orleans with two friends. The owner of the business was so impressed with Lincoln, he asked him to run his mill and store. Lincoln was a gifted storyteller and people came from all over to talk and trade with Lincoln. He enjoyed wrestling and debating. Lincoln became the captain of a band of volunteers during the Black Hawk War.

Lincoln is considered by many to be the greatest American President. He was elected on a strongly anti-slavery platform. With his election, the Southern States seceeded from the Union. Lincoln fought the Civil War to retain the integrity of the Union. Elected:
The Early Years
Abraham Lincoln grew up in poverty. He was born in a log cabin in Larue County, Kentucky. When Lincoln was seven, his family moved to Indiana. At the age of nine, Lincoln's mother died. His father remarried and Lincoln became attached to his stepmother, Sarah. He received very little formal education, but taught himself to read. At the age of 19, Lincoln took a raft full of goods down the Mississippi to New Orleans. After his trip to Mississippi, he moved to Illinois with the rest of the family. After a second trip to New Orleans, Lincoln moved to the frontier settlement of New Salem. At first, Lincoln worked as a store clerk for $15 a month plus accommodations. In 1832, Lincoln responded to the governor's called for volunteers for the Black Hawk War. He was elected captain of a group of volunteers. After serving for a little less than three months, Lincoln was mustered out without seeing any action.

Lincoln, Abraham
President during the USA Civil War by Rit Nosotro Although young Abraham learned the Bible from his mother until her death when Abe was but nine years old, Abraham Lincoln grew in skepticism of organized religion. However, the death of his mother, his own sons (d.1850,1862), and soldiers of "his" civil war, forced Abraham to often consider eternity, providence and God. This 16th President of the United States successfully lead his country through the greatest test in its history: the American Civil War. Did he ever return to the faith learned at his mother's knee? The man of many jobs had a bent toward learning; he read all the books he could get his hands on and taught himself law. In 1834 he ran successfully for a seat in the Illinois Legislature. He grew in importance in the Whig party, and passed his bar examination to become a lawyer. For the next ten years he balanced Illinois politics and his law practice, growing skillful and gaining renown in both. After the loss, Lincoln expected himself to fade from public view, but the reverse happened. He was called on to make speeches all over the North. At the Republican convention in 1860, Lincoln, though a decided underdog, was nominated to run for president. With the Democrats divided into a northern and a southern party, each with its own candidate, and yet another party in the running, Lincoln won easily.

Abraham Lincoln's Birthday
When: February 12th. Every American knows President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. "Honest Abe", as he was commonly known as, was born in the wilderness country of Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861. Although he hated war, he was drawn into it as he believed it was the only was to save the nation after the southern states declared their secession to the Union. In addition to serving as president during the civil war and saving the Union, Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in the U.S. forever. He also wrote and gave The Gettysburg Address, memorializing the bloodiest and most important battle of the Civil War. Gettysburg proved to be the turning point of the war. Shortly after the war ended, Abraham Lincoln became the first U.S. President to be assassinated. He was shot and mortally wounded on Good Friday, April 14, 1865 by James Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre.

The Civil War:
Lincoln, Abraham Abraham Lincoln The American people knew little about Lincoln when he became President. Little in his past experience indicated that he could successfully deal with the deep differences between Northerners and Southerners over slavery. Lincoln received less than 40 per cent of the popular vote in winning the presidential election of 1860. But by 1865, he had become in the eyes of the world equal in importance to George Washington. Through the years, many people have regarded Lincoln as the greatest person in United States history. During the Civil War, Lincoln's first task was to win the war. He had to view nearly all other matters in relation to the war. It was "the progress of our arms," he once said, "upon which all else depends." But Lincoln was a peace-loving man who had earlier described military glory as "that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of bloodthat serpent's eye that charms to destroy." The Civil War was by far the bloodiest war in U.S. history. In the Battle of Gettysburg, for example, the more than 45,000 total casualties (people killed, wounded, captured, or missing) exceeded the number of casualties in all previous American wars put together.
