Abraham Lincoln Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life:

Before his inauguration in March of 1861, seven Southern slave states seceded from the United States , formed the Confederate States of America , and took control of U.S. forts and other properties within their boundaries. These events soon led to the American Civil War Lincoln was a master politician who emerged as a wartime leader skilled at balancing competing considerations and at getting rival groups to work together toward a common goal. He personally directed the war effort, which ultimately led the Union forces to victory over the seceding Confederacy . His leadership qualities were evident in his diplomatic handling of the border slave states at the beginning of the fighting, in his defeat of a congressional attempt to reorganize his cabinet in 1862, in his many speeches and writings which helped mobilize and inspire the North, and in his defusing of the peace issue in the

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809- April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States of America. He served as President from March 4, 1861, until April 15, 1865 (he was re-elected in 1864). Lincoln's Vice-President was Andrew Johnson (1808-1875). Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky . He had very little formal schooling and was mostly self-educated. He eventually became a lawyer and a Republican politician; he earned the nickname "Honest Abe." Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842; they had four sons; they had four sons, but only one survived childhood. During Lincoln's presidency, the Southern states seceded from (left) the Union because Lincoln and the Northern states were against slavery. Six weeks after becoming President, the Civil War began. In this war, the Northern states (which stayed in the Union) fought the Southern states (called the Confederacy). The Civil War lasted from 1861 until 1865. On Jan. 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which eventually led to the freeing of all slaves in the USA. During the Civil War, Lincoln gave many speeches, including the Gettysburg Address (Nov. 1863), a short speech in which he stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. Lincoln was re-elected President in 1864.

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national historythe CIVIL WAR. He is considered by many historians to have been the greatest American president.
Early Life
Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hardin (now Larue) County, Ky. Indians had killed his grandfather, Lincoln wrote, "when he was laboring to open a farm in the forest" in 1786; this tragedy left his father, Thomas Lincoln, "a wandering laboring boy" who "grew up, literally without education." Thomas, nevertheless, became a skilled carpenter and purchased three farms in Kentucky before the Lincolns left the state. Little is known about Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Abraham had an older sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Thomas, who died in infancy. In 1816 the Lincolns moved to Indiana, "partly on account of slavery," Abraham recalled, "but chiefly on account of difficulty in land titles in Kentucky." Land ownership was more secure in Indiana because the Land Ordinance of 1785 provided for surveys by the federal government; moreover, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 forbade slavery in the area. Lincoln's parents belonged to a faction of the Baptist church that disapproved of slavery, and this affiliation may account for Abraham's later statement that he was "naturally anti-slavery" and could not remember when he "did not so think, and feel." Indiana was a "wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods." The Lincolns' life near Little Pigeon Creek, in Perry (now Spencer) County, was not easy. Lincoln "was raised to farm work" and recalled life in this "unbroken forest" as a fight "with trees and logs and grubs." "There was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education," Lincoln later recalled; he attended "some schools, so called," but for less than a year altogether. "Still, somehow," he remembered, "I could read, write, and cipher to the Rule of Three; but that was all."

The stories really are true: Abe Lincoln grew up on the American frontier, educated himself by reading borrowed books, and worked as a general store clerk long before he became the 16th president of the United States. His claims to fame are too numerous to list here; he is most often remembered for leading the Union through the Civil War and freeing Confederate slaves with the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation; for delivering the Gettysburg Address, the most famous oration in American history; and for his tragic assassination by John Wilkes Booth . Upon Lincoln's death

20. A Tale Of Weatherford, Texas ( TX )
Local legend about the us president, abraham lincoln, faking his death in 1865 in order to live a simple life away from politics and his wife.
http://www.geocities.com/waylon_halen/
President Lincoln's Adventures in Weatherford, TX Weatherford, Texas is a small community located a few miles west of Fort Worth. It's a place known for its long history of rich folklore and mythology. Among the stranger tales to come out of this area is a legend about the United States President Abraham Lincoln. The local belief is that President Lincoln faked his death in 1865 in order to start a simple life away from politics and his wife. At once this sounds outrageously stupid, but before passing judgment let's review the whole story. What most of us have been taught is that President Lincoln was assassinated by an actor named John Wilkes Booth shortly after the Civil War had ended. The official record says that Abraham Lincoln died on the morning of April 15, 1865. A hearse carried his body back to the White House around 9:00 A.M. The cavalry provided an escort to the procession which moved up 10th Street to G Street and then slowly to the White House. The temporary coffin of Abraham Lincoln was covered by an American flag. The body of the President were placed in the Guest Room which was on the second floor.
There were nine men present for the autopsy. Among these were the Surgeon General Dr. Joseph K. Barnes, Lincoln family physician, Dr. Robert King Stone, Dr. Charles Sabin Taft, Assistant Surgeon General Dr. Charles H. Crane, Army Assistant Surgeon William Morrow Notson, General Rucker of the Army's Quartermaster Department, Lincoln's friend, Orville H. Browning, Army Assistant Surgeon (pathologist) J. Janvier Woodward, and Army Assistant Surgeon (pathologist) Edward Curtis. Lincoln's widow, Mary Todd Lincoln sent a messenger to request a lock of hair from the President's head (as if she needed proof that it was in fact her husband). The autopsy itself was done by Dr. Curtis and Dr. Woodward.
