Japanese Submarine Attacks on Curry County
in World War II

On Wednesday morning, September 9, 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-25 surfaced west of Cape Blanco and launched a small seaplane piloted by Chief Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita. Fujita flew southeast over the Oregon coast, dropping incendiary bombs on Mount Emily, 10 miles northeast of Brookings. After Fujita's bombing run on Mount Emily, the I-25 came under attack by U.S. Army Air Corps aircraft, forcing the submarine to seek refuge on the ocean floor off Port Orford. The American attacks were unsuccessful, and Fujita was able to launch an additional bombing sortie three weeks later. Shortly after this sortie, the submarine sank the SS Camden , the SS Larry Doheny , and the Soviet (Russian) submarine L-16. Read the whole story below. The story of the
Imperial Japanese Navy Submarine I-25
The I-25 was one of eleven Japanese submarines configured to carry a seaplane. The aircraft provided a unique reconnaissance capability, but could also carry two bombs. Although the plane-equipped submarines were primarily intended for reconnaissance and scouting missions, they were heavily armed and capable of surface and submerged attack. The I-25 was the sixth boat of the B-1 type, I-15 class. It was built by Mitsubishi in Kobe, Japan, and completed in October 1941. The submarine was positioned off Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, but damage to the aircraft precluded it from conducting scouting missions for the attack.

Secretary Norton Transfers Lighthouse to California Parks in Scenic Ceremony at Point Sur Historic Park

POINT SUR, CALIFORNIA - In a ceremony today at Point Sur National Historic Park off scenic California Highway 1, Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton signed documents to transfer Point Sur Lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard to the California state parks. The event marked the first transfer of its kind on the West Coast, and she announced other lighthouses to follow in California, Washington, and Hawaii. Noted celebrants at the ceremony included California Resources Agency Secretary Michael Chrisman, state parks director Ruth Coleman, Monterey district park supervisor Phil Jenkins, GSA Regional Administrator Peter Stamison, Coast Guard 11th District Chief of Staff James Hass, U.S. Lighthouse Society President Wayne Wheeler and Central Coast Lighthouse Keepers Association director Doug Williams.
"Point Sur Light Station has been in continuous operation for 115 years. It stands as a witness to the journeys of seafarers a hundred years ago and to the migrations of whales today," Norton said. "This is the only complete turn-of-the-century light station open to the public in California. It preserves a sense of the drama and isolation of the chain of sixty California lighthouses begun in 1852 and managed by the Coast Guard until recently."

Department Of Interior Office of the Secretary CONTACT: Joan Moody For Immediate Release:May 26, 2004 12th Lighthouse under National Preservation Program: Secretary Norton Announces Transfer of St Simon's Lighthouse ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA - In a ceremony on St. Simon's Island, Ga., Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton today initiated transfer of the St. Simons Island lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. "The Coastal Georgia Historical Society is an example of the ideal lighthouse steward because it has restored the buildings and grounds of the St. Simons Island Light Station over the past 25 years," Secretary Norton said.
"Groups like the society and its volunteers are the lifeblood of lighthouse preservation around the nation."
The announcement made St. Simons the 12th lighthouse recommended for transfer under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA), which the Interior Department administers through its National Park Service in cooperation with the General Services Administration and the Coast Guard.
"The St. Simons Island Lighthouse is the single most distinctive and recognizable symbol on the island, and one of the premier landmarks along the Georgia coast," Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue said today. "I thank Secretary Norton and her department for recommending the transfer of this historic lighthouse to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society."

Granite Marker Commemorates
West Quoddy Head Light Station’s Easternmost Location
By Bob Trapani, Jr. Though all lighthouses in America today continue to stand sentry over our nation’s waterways, one beacon alone has the distinction of “standing further out” along the Atlantic seaboard than any other. West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine, not only greets the dawn of Photo by Ann-Marie Trapani

each new day first, it also sends out its piercing beam through calm, storm and fog from the easternmost point of the United States. To commemorate this great distinction, the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association and the Maine Department of Conservation – owners of the historic light station property, teamed up to establish a granite stone marker to depict “The Easternmost Point of the U.S.A.” The 3,000-pound marker has been placed adjacent to West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and former keeper’s dwelling, which now serves as a visitor center. Samuel Adams Drake once wrote, “The passage through all the rocky galleries of the Pine Tree Coast culminates at Quoddy Bay in a masterpiece.” Drake’s assessment of this gorgeous region could not

Discovering A Lighthouse
On A Cloudy, Rainy Day
The Eureka Reporter/Glenn Franco Simmons
The lighthouse at Harbor, Ore. There are many joys to living on the North Coast, and those include taking a ride on a rainy, cloudy weekend.
This past weekend, my wife Kathleen and I traveled to Crescent City and Harbor, Ore., where we found a beautiful lighthouse that overlooks the harbor at Harbor. I would like to hear from any readers who know the history of the lighthouse. It appears to have been an official lighthouse at one time and the Coast Guard is located at Harbor as well.
Here is what I’ve been able to find out about the lighthouse since I saw it on Sunday. Some of the information could be dated. The owners have not opened it for public tours.
It is known as the Pelican Bay Lighthouse because it is named after Pelican “Bay” that stretches from north of Crescent City to Harbor.
The lighthouse is located on a bluff above the Port of Brookings-Harbor on the Oregon Coast with a view of the Pacific Ocean. It is the newest lighthouse on the on the West Coast and possibly the newest in the United States. It is the second private residence on the Oregon Coast to be designated a private aid to navigation. It is owned by Bill and Jo Ann Cady.
It was built in 1990 by the Cadys and activated in 1997 at another location and moved to a southern bluff overlooking the harbor.

Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Photo Gallery
The Pt. Bonita Lighthouse
Marin Headands, California
The Pt. Bonita Lighthouse is situated at the end of an adventuresome path invloving tunnels and bridges (39K jpg, Canon 24-mm, August 1997). I've had my eye on this lighthouse for some time and have hiked out to its barren point on many occasions. It is a short, but interesting, walk through hand carved tunnels and across suspension bridges. The way takes you past the ruins of a life boat station. Finally you arrive at the very tip of land enclosing the northern side of the Golden Gate Straight. For two years I've approached different folks at the National Park Service people about arranging permission to photograph Pt. Bonita and Alcatraz Island. They are a hard bunch to pin down. On this particular day I just walked out to the lighthouse on a scouting mission. The wind and light looked mighty nice so I worked on convencing the docent that my kite flying would be innocent and unobtrusive. The docent said well maybe, ok, sort of, let's see and I sent the kite up for a trial run. I was able to take a couple of test rolls before I pulled it down. So these August images are test shots. After forwarding copies to the NPS I still haven't secured permission for additional shots.
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse site provides some information on Pt. Bonita. For instance, it relates that the "first fog signal used on the U.S. West Coast was at Point Bonita: an Army-surplus, eight-foot long, 24-pounder siege gun from the Benicia Arsenal. The 'fog signal' was operated by a new keeper, one Sgt. Maloney, U.S. Army Ret., who fired the gun every half-hour during foggy weather starting August 8, 1856." Now that would be interesting duty.

Welcome to the West Coast National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Database. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has been working in partnership with the BRIDGE to provide teachers and students with an online educational activity to learn more about important shipwrecks found within the 5 national marine sanctuaries (Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones and Olympic Coast) on the West Coast of the United States. The idea for this Shipwreck Database and the associated activities sprung from a collaborative effort with the Bridge to create a Data Tip of the Month highlighting our National Marine Sanctuary System. We wish to acknowledge the input from Bridge staff in developing this resource. We are pleased that our efforts to produce a special feature have resulted in the synthesis of much valuable information and the creation of a permanent database for your use. This data tip activity contains the following components:
    • Data tables containing 30 shipwrecks from each of the West Coast sanctuaries Navigational charts for each sanctuary Casualty reports and images from selected shipwrecks A Data Exercise where you can plot the shipwrecks in each sanctuary Questions related to shipwrecks in each sanctuary Answer Key

A Roman lighthouse is located on the Cliffs of Dover in the UK that was constructed in 40 A.D. The first lighthouse in America was at Boston on Little Brewster Island (1716). The first keeper was George Worthylake who was drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718. The original tower was destroyed by the British and eventually reconstructed in 1784. The oldest existing lighthouse in America is Sandy Hook, NJ (1764), which is still in operation. There were 12 lighthouses when we became a nation in 1776.
