LIGHTHOUSES
The Lighthouses of Martha's Vineyard
There are five lighthouses on Martha's Vineyardthe Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah, the West Chop Lighthouse in Vineyard Haven, the East Chop lighthouse in Oak Bluffs, the Edgartown Lighthouse at Edgartown Harbor, and the Cape Pogue lighthouse on Chappaquiddick. While they are not regularly open for tours, all of them except the Cape Pogue lighthouse are accessible by road. The first welcome beacon seen by ferry-bound visitors to the Vineyard is the West Chop Light, one of the five historic lighthouses which are sentinels of the waters of the Island. The West Chop Light stands tall above the tree line with its light-keeper house. It was built in 1891 out of brick, replacing one threatened by encroaching erosion. At the start of the century, its beacon guided ships enroute to Boston by way of Vineyard Sound. Today the light offers a safe guide to the thousands of recreational boaters who visit Vineyard waters each year. The West Chop Light stands as a matriarch to the Vineyard's other lighthouses. At the turn of the century hundreds of steamers and schooners passed off West Chop. Its lamp was kept bright by Vineyard whale oil. In the words of one Vineyard writer: "Historically, aesthetically, and economically, the harbor light stands as a sort of guardian and overlord of may values accumulated in centuries of rich tradition."

Before there were lighthouses on the Peninsula, ships bound for Portland and Astoria navigated their way through the high waves and shifting sandbars, focusing on fluttering white flags and notched trees along the shoreline by day and flickering signal fires by night. These methods were crude at best and, despite heroic efforts, the sea offshore the Long Beach Peninsula became known as 'The Graveyard of the Pacific'.
The lighthouses of the Peninsula, favorite visitor stops both winter and summer, are two of 750 guarding the shores of the United States. Completed in 1856, the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse guides sailors into the mouth of the Columbia River. The century-old North Head Lighthouse, completed in 1898, guides mariners approaching from the north.

NAUTICAL LINGO EXIT HOME Here I have provided some interesting lighthouse facts that do not
necessarily pertain just to the Great Lakes Lighthouses of Michigan. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a lighthouse, the famous Pharos of Alexandria, built about 280BC. Those records tell us that it was the tallest light ever built 450 ft. (comparable to a 45-story skyscraper) and used an open fire at the top. This fantastic structure survived for 1500 years until it was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1302. It took twenty long years to complete this structure which was completed using slave labor. It was a three-part tower with a square base, a second story with eight sides and a narrow, taller, round third story. At night they believe its lighted fire could be seen for thirty miles, whereas by day it produced a column of smoke for a daymark.
The oldest existing lighthouse in the world is considered to be La Coruna in Spain that dates from ca. 20BC. Next, would be a Roman lighthouse built on the Cliffs of Dover in Britain that was constructed in 40AD.

West Coast Adventures: Shipwrecks, Lighthouses and Rescues Along Canada's West Coast
The southwest coast of Vancouver Island is a notorious stretch known for dramatic and often sudden winter storms. Navigating the coast is challenging at best. Despite the harshness, the coast has an alluring beauty that has captivated people through the centuries. Their experiences, like the lichen-covered fence posts, dangling bits of telegraph wire and rusting anchors infuse the landscape with legend and story. This book contains some of those fascinating stories.

50. Kenneth-dulian

The Lighthouses of Kenneth Dulian
By B. John Zavrel, Museum of European Art With an artistic vision comparable to Man Ray, Philippe Halsman and Helmut Newton, young photographer Kenneth J. Dulian presents the ages old fascination with lighthouses in a new light. Lighthouses have been around in one form or another nearly as long as human civilization. However, throughout the 20th century, radar and other navigational systems have gradually made lighthouses nearly obsolete. At least, this is the case in the modern Western world. All the same, we have not lost any of our fascination with them. Thanks to the Kenneth J. Dulian, we are enriched with a new way of seeing the objects of a timeless fascination. He provokes us to think about lighthouses in such a way as to awaken within us feelings of longing and reunion. What exactly is a lighthouse, and what significance did it once have? The lighthouse is a tower-like navigational aid which emits a strong light, making it visible from long distances. In the past, this light was given through the burning of wood or coal, and it was necessary that a caretaker be present at all times. They were installed at important points on the coast, on lakes, islands, and especially dangerous shallow waters. Today, most lighthouses function without a human caretaker, since they have become fully-automated. Also, they don't have to be fed with wood or coal. And where lighthouses are no longer used, we still let them - fortunately - stand. They remind us about earlier times, and they guide memories back to us from the boundless oceans of our childhood.

You are Visitor Welcome to my "Home Page". As you can see from my "logo" I am an Apple enthusiast. The fact that the Eastern Shore of Virginia is isolated from the rest of the world has tended to make us self reliant with regards to repairs and upgrades. west coast lighthouses. East Brother was one of about seventy lighthouses built on Several events shaped the early history of west coast lighthouses.
http://www.ebls.org/book/west.htm
West Coast Lighthouses East Brother was one of about seventy lighthouses built on the West Coast of the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its history is linked to these other beacons in many ways. All were built and maintained by the federal government. All responded to similar changes in our culture and technology. And many were cared for by keepers who had worked at other lighthouses as well. In other respects, however, each lighthouse, including East Brother, has its own unique story to tell.
Lighthouses in Central California, past and present. Lighthouses help mariners in several ways. Major sea coast lights serve as landfalls for ships arriving from across the ocean. These lighthouses and the smaller lights along the coast and in bays also act as guides for coastal vessels, in some cases warning them of dangerous reefs or shoals. Others mark turning points along the coast or at entrances to bays or harbors. Most also aid mariners as landmarks visible during the day. They are, however, of little help day or night when there is thick fog. In the past many light stations were equipped with a fog signal such as a bell, steam whistle, or steam siren. Today such devices have given way to electronic fog signals and radio beacons. These modern aids and ship-based radar have frequently made lighthouses of secondary importance in navigation. Nevertheless, there is still nothing quite as reassuring as seeing a light, particularly when steering a vessel near shore to enter a harbor or bay.

Florida's Lighthouse Trail
Florida has more than 1,800 miles of coastline, more than any other state in the continental United States. To ensure safe marine navigation along that vast stretch of waterfront, Florida boasts an impressive collection of lighthouses, including some of the nation’s oldest and tallest. There are thirty lighthouses still standing proud in Florida. Most of these have been lovingly preserved and several have undergone complete restoration. Some invite visitors to climb their spiraling staircases and take in the dazzling view from their lofty lanterns. Many others, although their towers aren’t open to the public, are located in public parks and can be easily viewed at close range. Even the spider-legged reef lighthouses offshore can be conveniently viewed by boat. But in every case, these venerable beacons continue to illuminate the pages of history. Be sure to have your camera handy.
This tour explores the entire state, from the Northeast Coast down along the Atlantic Ocean to the Florida Keys, and back up the West Coast along the Gulf of Mexico. The map on pages 58-89 of this booklet illustrates where the lighthouses are located around the state. A complete list of all lighthouses is provided on page 105.
