It was written prior to the events of 11 September 2001 and does not reflect the changes that the Coast Guard underwent to respond to the new challenges facing that service. By the end of the Mexican War in 1848, the United States had taken possession of California, whose coastline was virtually unknown and devoid of any aids to navigation. In fact, not a single lighthouse existed along the entire West Coast. With gold fever running high and wagon trains full of pioneers pushing west towards California, the federal government tasked four small organizations to aid mariners and provide federal law enforcement in the wild Southwest. In time, these four agencies would combine to form the modern day U.S. Coast Guard. The Treasury Department awarded the contract to build the lights to the Baltimore-based firm of Francis X. Kelly and Francis A. Gibbons. The ship Oriole was dispatched, with men and supplies, to San Francisco. In December 1852, the foundation for the first lighthouse in California was begun on Alcatraz Island. By 1854, the first light shined from the West Coast on Alcatraz Island.

Battered by over a century of storms and hurricanes, deprived of its lifesaving lamp and outcast by the U. S. Coast Guard, this once stalwart sentinel clings precariously to shifting and eroding sands as it teeters at a 14 degree angle toward the encroaching waters of the Gulf of Mexico. With the next major storm, this former beacon of trust and warning to mariners and fishermen will likely crumble into the sea. Can it be saved? Is it worth the effort? For centuries, lighthouses have been a symbol of hope and guidance to those in despair. The first lighthouse in ancient times was probably a bonfire kept burning on some coastal cliff side to guide the weary voyager home. The ground level bonfire advanced to a signal fire in an iron basket hoisted onto a pole or suspended high on a tripod. Around 300 BC., a 450-foot tower known as the Pharos of Alexandria was built at the estuary of the Nile River, Egypt. It was the first recorded lighthouse and doubled as a temple. This tower survived 1400 years before being felled by an earthquake and was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
