Present and past lighthouses located on us gulf of Mexico in Texas, to allow a look at the lighthouses of the United States coast of the gulf of Mexico.
http://www.coastlights.com/
This site is to allow a look at the lighthouses of the United States coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I have included some information about the lighthouses and also directions for getting to where you can see the lights. The information has been taken from various sources, but many of the facts are from the Inventory of Historic Light Stations by the National Park Service and Lighthouses, Lightships, and the Gulf of Mexico by David L. Cipra. While they are not many in number, when compared to many areas of the country, they are part of the proud heritage of America's lighthouse service. I will be adding additional lighthouses to the site as time and travel permit me to do so. NEW - I have now started including pages that have photos and histories about lighthouses that no longer exist, such as Brazos River and Redfish Bar Cut lighthouses. While I have found photos of some of these lighthouses, if anyone has photos of any of the Gulf Coast Lighthouses that no longer exist, and would be willing to let me use them on this site, please contact me.

Mexico East Coast Lighthouses
Although this region is close to the U.S., it is mostly terra incognita for American lighthouse fans. That's too bad, because some of Mexico's most impressive and historic lighthouses are located on this coast. While the U.S. Coast Guard is rapidly pulling out of the lighthouse business, in Mexico lighthouses still play an important role in coastal navigation, and new towers are still being built from time to time. Sadly, many of the lighthouses on this page are known only from listings of navigational aids . More information is needed for all of them, and photos are needed for most of them. If you can add to our online knowledge, please let me know Mexican lighthouses are managed by the , the cabinet agency that also manages the country's airports and seaports. Many of the larger light stations are staffed by resident civilian keepers.

The Search along the Gulf Coast
Along the Gulf of Florida

Leaving Tallahassee, Florida from the State Capitol on Monroe Avenue, I headed South in search of lighthouses along the Gulf Coast. I found a source of information at the Ranger Station in St. Mark's National Preserve for my travels. As I drove along the roadway toward my first lighthouse, I saw something very large on the left side of the road. After I passed the object I realized it was a huge alligator that was retrieving something lying in the road. I stopped and backed my van up, but by then the large creature had slipped back into the swamp. A few miles further down the road the second oldest lighthouse built in 1842 stood operating on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Thus, the beginning of my journey in search of lighthouses along US 98 began as I headed back to Houston, Texas.
St. Marks Lighthouse
Location: On the Eastside of the entrance to St. Marks River, Appalachia Bay, Florida
Visited May 12, 2000
As an aid to navigation, St Marks Lighthouse was first built in 1829, but the existing tower was actually completed in 1842. This lighthouse has survived the Civil War and the strongest of hurricanes and continues to serve as one of America's best. It is not difficult to locate following resource maps. The surrounding grounds are accessible from a parking area on the West side. A low viewing platform with a few steps is located on the North side of the lighthouse. I met other visitors who were willing to take pictures from the observation deck for me.

Printing this file several pages at a time will result in a finished product of higher quality and in a format that more closely resembles that on the screen. LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.
