Department Of Interior Office of the Secretary Contact: Joan Moody For Immediate Release:June 4, 2004 Secretary Norton Announces Transfer of Five More Lighthouses (TRAVERSE CITY, MI) Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton today announced the transfer of four Michigan lighthouses and one lighthouse in Washington state from the U.S. Coast Guard to nonprofit groups or state and county agencies. "Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, these lighthouses are going at no cost to those who can be the best stewards of them," said Norton. Recipients of lighthouses must ensure their stewardship for public parks and recreation and for cultural, educational and historic preservation purposes. Speaking at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Conference at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Norton noted that the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act program has made great progress since she made the initial announcements about it in Traverse City two years ago. The National Park Service, in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard, has made 30 lighthouses and stations available for transfer from the Coast Guard. LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY American lighthouse history begins in the Eighteenth century. Boston was the site of America’s first light station. The Boston Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island was built in 1716. The tower was replaced in 1783; the first one was blown up during the Revolutionary War. President George Washington ordered the construction of the light station at Portland Head in 1791, two years after the adoption of the US Constitution. Because of the importance of maritime safety, president Washington urged Congress to pass a lighthouse bill as one of its first official acts. Construction and operation of coastal lights was the responsibility of the Treasury department under the leadership of Alexander Hamilton. The system of navigational lights created in colonial times and expanded by the US Government eventually became the best and most extensive in the world. Beacons marked not only the eastern shores but also the coast of Florida, Gulf of Mexico, the rugged cliffs of the pacific coast and the shores of the Great Lakes. A lighthouse board (composed of engineers and maritime professionals) was created in 1910 and was governed by the Bureau of lighthouses. The first commissioner of Lighthouses was George R. Putnam. In July 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt and Congress discontinued the Lighthouse Service and transferred it back the Coast Guard.

PRESERVATION Beacons are now subjected to deterioration by the elements and vandalism. Many have been saved and are private homes, museums, or part of a county, state or national park site for recreational use. Numerous lights also still play an important role as private aides to navigation for small craft. GLLKA works with other lighthouse organizations, offering direction in legislative processes and other aspects, to enable them to achieve their preservation and restoration goals. The preservation/restoration process is expensive. Contributions are encouraged for cost of maintenance and reconstruction of lighthouse projects, as determined by the GLLKA board of directors. Michigan is quite unique among the states in that it is divided into two distint geographic sections, the Upper peninsula, and the Lower peninsula. Lake Michigan lies between the two peninsulas. The Upper peninsula is very sparsely populated, more than 90% of the peninsula being forested. The Lower peninsula contains the cities, industry, and agriculture. The Upper and Lower Peninsulas were connected in 1957 with the construction of Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge. A lmost half of Michigan is comprised of water and, except for Alaska, Michigan has more shoreline than any other state, fronting four of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. With 3,177 miles of Great Lakes shoreline it is easy to see why Michigan boasts a thriving recreational industry, and leads the nation with approximately one million registered pleasure boats. The Pharos. The Great Lighthouse at Alexandria In the fall of 1994 a team of archaeological scuba divers entered the waters off of Alexandria, Egypt. Working beneath the surface they searched the bottom of the sea for artifacts. Large underwater blocks of stone were marked with floating masts so that an Electronic Distance Measurement station on shore could obtain their exact positions. Global positioning satellites were used to further fix the locations. The information was then fed into computers to create a detailed database of the sea floor. Ironically, these scientists were using some of the most high-tech devices available at the end of the 20th century to try and discover the ruins of one of the most advanced technological achievements of the 3rd century, B.C.: The Pharos. It was the great lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World The story of the Pharos starts with the founding of the city of Alexandria by the Macedonian conqueror Alexander the Great in 332 B.C.. Alexander started at least 17 cities named Alexandria at different locations in his vast domain. Most of them disappeared, but Alexandria in Egypt thrived for centuries and continues even today.
