This section grants broad general powers concerning policy matters to the Secretary. Many of the powers are contained in existing law but some are enlarged and some additional powers are added as explained following. 39 Stat. 601 ). Said section has been divided. The provision authorizing the Secretary to man stations seems more appropriately given to the operational head of the Service, the Commandant, and for that reason is incorporated in section (c) of this title. (Aug. 16, 1916, ch. 417, 39 Stat. 601 44 Stat. 817 ). These sections were rewritten in order to broaden existing authority in regard to the training of Coast Guard personnel at schools of the other armed forces, thus approaching a practice of war time, and making for economy in the training of Service personnel; such training would be on a basis mutually satisfactory to the Secretaries involved. 22 Stat. 56

Lighthouses of the Bahamas
The Bahamas, a former British colony and now an independent nation, form an archipelago stretching southeast from Florida. In the Bahamas, lighthouse preservation is a matter of some concern. Some of the lighthouses are well-known tourist attractions and seem well maintained, but others are isolated, rarely visited, and in poor condition. The active lighthouses are operatted by the Bahamas Port Department. Grand Turk's one historic lighthouse is now safe in the care of the National Trust. Photos and current accounts of visits to many of these lighthouses are scarce on the Internet. I'd be happy to receive information or photos you'd like to share. Admiralty numbers are from Volume J of the . U.S. NGA numbers are from Publication 110. What's Hot:

Peter Conover Hains
Major General, United States Army Courtesy of Save The Light: Historic research is like working a giant puzzle. You know the answers are out there, but where do you find them? For the last 2 years, our puzzle was Peter Conover Hains. As a Major in the US Army Corps of Engineers he designed and built the foundation for the Morris Island Lighthouse. His decisions in design and construction are, in large part, the reason this lighthouse has been able to withstand multiple hurricanes, the 1886 earthquake and severe erosion. But who was he? How did he get here? What were his accomplishments? These were questions that went unanswered until a Charleston woman approached us with the name and address of the great grandson of Major Hains, Peter Conover Hains, IV. It seems that her deceased husband had served in the army with Peter Conover Hains, III. In speaking with Colonel Hains and, later, several other relatives, we began to develop a picture of an extraordinary engineer and army officer. Peter Conover Hains was born on July 6, 1840 in Philadelphia, the son of a poor shoemaker. He managed to receive an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1857 and was a classmate of George Armstrong Custer. His class was graduated in June 1861 for service in the Civil War, the first class to graduate in 4 years. Prior to that time, West Point was a five-year program. In his class, there were 31 Union officers, 26 Confederate officers and 9 men rising to the rank of General.

Original Cape Hatteras lens readied for public display
This story is based on an article in the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot of March 20, 2005. The 152-year-old first -order Fresnel lens of the first Cape Hatteras lighthouse is being conserved for display at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras. Battered by time, souvenir hunters, and vandals, the historic lens has been in storage for years at the National Park Service office in Manteo. Now it is being restored by Fresnel lens expert Jim Woodward, lampist Jim Dunlap, and metals expert Kurt Fosberg. The restoration will cost $75,000 and should be completed by April 1. The lens will be displayed in the entrance hall of the museum, which is open to visitors although the rest of the building is incomplete. Manufactured in Paris in 1853, the lens is one of the first purchased by the U.S. Lighthouse Service. It was installed in the 1803 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to improve the marking of one of the most dangerous ship passages on the U.S. coast, the infamous Diamond Shoals. Because of its reputation as dangerous, Cape Hatteras was one of the first locations in the country to get the lighthouse technology. At the start of the Civil War, the lens was removed by Confederate forces to keep it out of the hands of the Union forces. Hidden, recovered, lost, and recovered again, it vanished from history as the lighthouse service lost track of its whereabouts.

Five regional chapters currently represent the United States Lighthouse Society. The New Dungeness Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society is working to preserve the 1865 New Dungeness Lighthouse, located at the tip of the five-mile-long New Dungeness Peninsula in the state of Washington. One, and sometimes two, volunteer couples reside in the dwelling for a period of one week. While at the station they conduct public tours of the lighthouse and do various maintenance chores. The station is located in a spectacular setting, backed by several majestic mountain ranges. Located in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, one might see seals, various sea birds, an occasional whale and bald eagles. To qualify to stay at the lighthouse, one must be a member of the New Dungeness Chapter. For more information, contact them at:
