21. Using GPS To Locate Lighthouses - @us-lighthouses.com.
the lighthouses that are still used as aids to navigation by the us Coast This will put you in the general area of the lighthouse on your software.
http://www.us-lighthouses.com/gps.php
Random thoughts by me To start off, I will first list my GPS hardware information. I currently have a Garmin Streetpilot GPS receiver, USA and Canada Metroguide software, Garmin padded carrying case, and 16MB memory module. The receiver comes with a serial cable to load the software from your PC. and a cigarette lighter power cable to preserve your batteries. What is all this stuff you ask? Well, the receiver is the thing that is used to triangulate your position on the globe by taking measurements from up to 12 satellites. With the software, you can load in different maps to provide street level detail for areas that you will be traveling in. The 16MB memory module sits inside the receiver and provides a storage area for the maps from the software. And the carrying case is, well, a carrying case. How does GPS work? GPS stands for Global Positioning System. This allows a person to find any particular point on the global by using a set of coordinates (Latitude and Longitude). It uses a series of satellites that are constantly circling the earth to triangulate your position. Once your receiver has a lock on at least three satellites, your position can be triangulated to within 3 meters (~ 10 feet) of your exact location. Most receivers have what is called a 12 channel parallel antenna. This allows the receiver to get a "lock" on up to 12 satellites.

North Carolina's Lighthouses
Bodie Island Light
T he National Park Service operates a visitors center in the old keepers house of Bodie Island Light. Bodie Island is still a working lighthouse with its original first order Fresnel lens, one of the few Fresnel lenses still operating in its original tower. The light station grounds are open year-round, however, until complete restoration is accomplished, the lighthouse itself is not accessible to the public. L ocated south of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore entrance on US Hwy 12, the present Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of three that have stood vigil in this general area since 1847. Details on these three towers are below F or additional information, contact the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Route 1, Box 675, Manteo, NC 27954; (252) 473-2111. Lighthouse Society Notes:
by Cheryl-Shelton Roberts
Height of tower: 165 feet, 156 feet to focal plane, Year Completed: 1872, Signal Distance: 19 Nautical Miles, Signal Pattern: white 2.5 seconds on, 2.5 seconds off, 2.5 seconds on and 22.5 seconds eclipse with 2 cycles each minute. Bodie Island Lighthouse is halfway between the Currituck Beach and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses on Highway 12 south of Nags Head and west of Coquina Beach. Built in 1872 on the isolated Body's Island (as it was originally called) it remains today one of the most classic settings of American light stations. Its magnificent first-order Fresnel lens may be seen flashing its warning each night. The original spelling "Body" is thought to be named after the family who owned the land.

The Three Cape Fear Lighthouses

The first lighthouses built on North Carolina’s southern coast were a series of beacons installed along the 25-mile stretch from the mouth of the Cape Fear River to Wilmington. Lighthouses like Campbell Island Light, Orton's Point Light, Upper Jetty Light and the lightship at Horseshoe Shoal have all disappeared. Price Creek Lighthouse is the only one of this original series that stands today.
Price Creek Lighthouse
Price Creek Lighthouse, erected in 1849, was the last lighthouse built in the original series. Originally there were two beacons standing next to each other at this site: a 20-foot circular brick structure and a wooden structure on top of a keeper's brick house. During the Civil War, the keeper's house was used as a Confederate States Signal Station and the beacons were a means of communication between Fort Fisher and Fort Caswell. In the hands of the Confederate States Signal Corps, the beacons served military and civilian blockade runners.

Secretary Norton Announces New Owners for More Lighthouses Under Popular Program
WASHINGTON Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton today announced her selection of candidates to receive ownership of four lighthouses under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act and announced that applications are being accepted for ownership of nine others. The secretary's recommendations on the four lighthouses are forwarded to the administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration, who will transfer ownership of the lighthouses from the U.S. Coast Guard to the new owners. "Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, these lighthouses are going at no cost to selected private or public groups who have demonstrated their capability to care for these wonderful cultural icons," Norton said. "I am pleased to announce new stewards for these four lighthouses." Secretary Norton and the National Park Service, in partnership with GSA and the Coast Guard, have made 50 lighthouses and stations available for transfer from the Coast Guard since 2001. With more than 200 additional lighthouses potentially available for transfer, more decisions are expected this year.

of Five More Lighthouses
(TRAVERSE CITY, MI) Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton today announced the transfer of four Michigan lighthouses and one lighthouse in Washington state from the U.S. Coast Guard to nonprofit groups or state and county agencies. "Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, these lighthouses are going at no cost to those who can be the best stewards of them," said Norton. Recipients of lighthouses must ensure their stewardship for public parks and recreation and for cultural, educational and historic preservation purposes.
Speaking at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Conference at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Norton noted that the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act program has made great progress since she made the initial announcements about it in Traverse City two years ago.
The National Park Service, in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard, has made 30 lighthouses and stations available for transfer from the Coast Guard. Today the Secretary set in process the transfer of the following lighthouses:

'The first head of America's Bureau of Lighthouses, George R. Putnam, once said that, ". . . lighthouses appeal to the interest and better instinct of man because they are symbolic of never-ceasing watchfulness, of steadfast endurance in every exposure, of widespread helpfulness. The building and the keeping of the lights is a picturesque and humanitarian work of the nation." His sentiments surely echo those of countless sailors, who for centuries have relied on the guidance of lighthouses. In fact, lighthouses have proven to be such a popular icon with the American public in general that the U.S. Postal Service is once again singing their praises.'
