Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q1: Why did you create this website? A: We've been photographing lighthouses for over 10 years. When we first started travelling around looking for lighthouses we found that there weren't many websites on lighthouses. Remember, this was over 10 years ago (there are plenty of them now!). Also, it was difficult to find good, or any, directions to lighthouses on the web. We decided we wanted to share our photos as well as the routes we took to get to these lighthouses. The easiest way to do this was to create a website. Back to top Q2: Why don't you have any lighthouses from such-and-such US state or Canadian province listed on your page? I know that state/province has (more) lighthouses!

information about them. One historical note is needed. The Serrana and Roncador Banks were formerly claimed and occupied by the U.S.; the islands reverted to Colombia in 1981 after the U.S. gave up its claims in a 1972 treaty. The Serranilla Bank and Bajo Nuevo are still claimed by the U.S.; the U.S. Department of State reiterated the American claim in December 2003. All these islands are also claimed by Nicaragua, and Bajo Nuevo, at least, is claimed by Jamaica.

Lighthouse Website Links ... Lighthouse News Archive General Site Areas Submit News To Us File Downloads FAQ Send Us Feedback ... Website Statistics LH.net needs your help! As I meander through ideas for the style and look for Lighthousing.net, I've also noticed a lacking in some other areas. I'm looking for members to help me out with filling the Lighthouse Information section of the site. If you check it out, you'll notice a lot of empty states or missing lighthouses. I would like to put together a team of at least 5 or 6 people (or more if we get them!) to help fill these areas in with photos, information, directions, and other things relating to the lighthouses in each state. (International cane come later, if need be). I'm in the process of writing some code to handle this, so each helper can enter the information for their assigned states/regions. If you would like to help, please email me, or PM me on here!

Government Information on Lighthouses
Responsibility for and eminence of lighthouses has been the responsibility of the federal government since 1789. The federal government at that time took the responsibility of colonial lighthouses from the states and Congress made appropriations for necessary funds. This began the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The administration for this Service switched hands between the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department many times before being consolidated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1939. He combined the Lighthouse Service with the Coast Guard where it has remained. Coast Guard employees rarely man the lighthouses at this time, but it is still an important part of the service's heritage and history. This is a guide to the information the government holds on lighthouses as well as to the sites they sponsor for lighthouses on the East coast.
Sources for Information
National Park Service Within the National Park History Program, lighthouse information is abundant in the National Maritime Initiative. It was established to preserve America's maritime heritage. This site has 6 main directories for lighthouse information. Maritime Resources Here you can find lighthouses and light ships within the National Park System listed by state. Each lighthouse or ship is clickable to take you directly to that site.

About The Site

General Lighthouse Literature A listing of general lighthouse information. America's Lighthouses - An Illustrated History (Francis Ross Holland, Jr., Dover Publications, Inc., New York, ISBN # 0-486-25576-X) - This general book on the history of America's lighthouses is a bit dated, but very thorough. It covers the entire country, and also has excellent sections on lanterns, fog signals, and the lives of keepers. The book also provides photos of many lighthouses as they originally appeared. Anatomy of a Lighthouse (Michael J. Rhein, Barnes and Noble Books, ISBN # 0-7607-2321-4) - This fascinating book delves more deeply into how a lighthouse is built, and why. The book uses examples from all over the world, and the photography is outstanding. Beacon on the Rock (Peter Williams, Quintet Publishing, London, ISBN # 1-7641-5349-8) - Coffee table book of lighthouse history and photos from around the world. Endangered Lighthouses (Tim Harrison and Ray Jones, The Globe Pequot Press, Guilford, Connecticut, ISBN # 0-7627-0815-8) - A record of lighthouses endangered by storms, erosion, neglect, and progress.

Lighthouses of the United States
Lighthouses are romantic and mysterious, and have long been the stuff of legends. These are the stories of many magnificent and historic lighthouses of the United States, of their legends, their stories and their keepers. We also offer travel guides and a special section devoted to lighthouses of the Great Lakes. Books and websites that serve as guides to lighthouses often include brief histories as well as current travel information.
General Lighthouse History and Guides: Books American Lighthouses: A Comprehensive Guide (1998) by Bruce Roberts and Ray Jones: This guide is organized by region, and then by state within the region. There are over 450 lighthouse entries, each of which includes a small photo and a brief history and description. The best part of the entry is the "travel information," which describes how to get to each lighthouse. Legendary Lighthouses (1998) by John Grant: As they note in the introduction of this book (a companion to the PBS Legendary television series), lighthouses "speak to people on many levels." They attempt to address some of those levels here by offering a blend of photographs, histories, and interesting stories. There is also a website (also called
