Wood
Above photo of Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse
Wood is one of the earliest lighthouse construction materials. Wood had become the most common construction material since it could be supplied inexpensively from nearby woods and mills. Architectural styles were diverse and even early uses of a lamp on a post could serve small harbors. Few early wooden towers survive because of their susceptibility to fire. Other wooden lighthouses that are not maintained over a period of time rot after a period of time. Stone
Above photo of Piney Point Lighthouse

The stone towers were built simply by piling one stone on top of another. These stones were held together by mortar. Since the walls apparently contained no additional support such as reinforcing rods, they had to be tapered as they rose in order for the base to support the ever increasing weight and to prevent the tower from becoming unstable. Therefore, the higher they wished to build the light, the thicker the tower had to be at the base. Given the flat nature of east coast geography, where all pre-federal lights were built, there was a need to build the lighthouses as tall as possible. Since colonial lights peaked at about 90 feet, we may assume that this was the maximum practical height for a tower built during this era.

Also see: Profiles - An even closer look at lighthouse construction materials. Construction Materials Initially, unlit markers were used for seafarers. This marker was raised to be visible at a distance, thus the lighthouse tower. Styles and materials used for classic lighthouses were partly influenced by other uses such as look out, defense tower , residence for personnel and period of artistic architectural styles. However, a few small lights were only a lamp on a post or in a tree. As a matter of fact, some lights were hoisted up onto a pole called "the swape". In the 1500's in Scandinavia a fire was kept in an iron basket which was raised & lowered to light the fire.

St. Augustine
The entire Florida East Coast...in detail !
View from atop the St. Augustine Lighthouse St. Augustine
is the oldest city in the United States and Canada, making it one of the most historic areas in America. Many cultures have shaped this area's past including Native Americans and Spanish conquistadores like Ponce De Leon. He was searching for the Fountain of Youth...he never found it. During his travels, he did manage to do a thing or two worth mentioning, like giving Florida it's name. He happened to celebrate the Spanish Festival of Flowers, "La Florida", in Florida, and named it accordingly. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, who named it after Augustine, who's feast day fell on the day land was spotted (August 28). It is the oldest permanent European settlement in the U.S. and Canada, settled some 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Before the Europeans, the now extinct Timucuan Indians settled the area first. Castillo de San Marco The city has been controlled by various nations: Spain, England, France, even the Confederate States of America. Florida became a state in 1845. In the 1880's Henry Flagler began to convert parts of St. Augustine into a resort community, starting with the palatial Hotel Ponce De Leon, now

N. E. Upham served in cargo liners and cargo passenger liners until he joined the staff of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. He was Deputy Head of the Ships Department until his retirement. Egyptian Boats and Ships 0 7478 0222 X (Shire Egyptology 20) 56 pp, 36 ills. This comprehensive survey of Egyptian nautical archaeology and history from the Predynastic period to the end of the Ptolemaic period is based on the latest findings in nautical archaeology and research. In particular, the book takes advantage of the study of possible or certain Early Dynastic boat remains from Tarkhan and Abydos, the discovery of large Middle Kingdom ship timbers from Lisht and the find of a Persian-period boat near Heliopolis. Beginning with an examination of the physical environment of the Nile Valley, which has important implications for the development of nautical technology in Egypt, the author surveys the principal chronological divisions of Egyptian history, concentrating as much as possible on the actual remains of boats but also using artistic representations and historical sources. A final chapter surveys the place of boats in Egyptian religious beliefs and practices.

The East Coast of Florida
Florida: Empire of the Sun
The long, double coast line is an outstanding feature of the East Coast of Florida, a series of lovely islands and palm-fringed peninsulas forming a protective barrier for its great salt-water lagoons Matanzas River, Halifax River, Indian River and Lake Worth. Connected by canals, these comprise what is known as the Florida Inland Waterway, favorite yachting route in Southern waters, where more than five thousand fine boats cruise annually. The United States has recently appropriated more than four million dollars to maintain a depth of eight feet at low water along this popular watercourse. The resorts of the East Coast are of infinite variety, but are particularly notable for the hard white sand beaches and splendid rolling surf of the ocean and the sheltered salt rivers for fishing and boating along the Inland Waterway. All of this delightful coastal playground lies far south of the southernmost part of California, so that it must be compared as to tropical foliage with Egypt, India and Mexico. In climate, however, it is unique because of the tempering influence of the trade winds. The Gulf Stream and the intricate maze of waters threading the coast also prevent extremes of temperature and give the East Coast a climate remarkable the year round for its equability and refreshing mildness. When Florida first became established as a resort state in the early eighties, Jacksonville was the Mecca of tourists. Luxurious steamers ran up the St. Johns River as far as Sanford, stopping at many little resorts among the orange groves, from one of which, Picolata, a stage coach ran to St. Augustine, still buried in the obscurity of its dim past. Many famous visitors made the trip to Florida, including Presidents Grant and Cleveland, whose retinue of news correspondents wrote rapturously of the climate, and photographed the tropical river scenes for publication in Northern magazines.

Driving North from Marigot Bay, you'll start your journey by going through extensive banana plantations with the occasional packaging plant through the village of Ravine Poisson before climbing steeply over Barre de l'Isle, the mountain barrier that divides the island. This area, the limit of the St. Lucia Parrot's range, abounds in rainforest trees and fine stands of pine, blue mahoe and mahogany. Dennery The road descends through Grande Rivière to Dennery where the vegetation is mostly xerophytic scrub. Dennery is set in a sheltered bay with Dennery Island guarding its entrance and dominated by the Roman Catholic church. Here you can see the distinctive St. Lucia fishing boats pulled up on the beach. Carved out of single tree trunks, the bows are straight and pointed rather than curved and are all named with phrases like "Gold help me", "African Roots", "Jesus is my Lord", etc...

Santo Domingo Why choose Santo Domingo?
Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the New World, where the settlement of all the Americas began. See the first cathedral, the first hospital. Wander down cobble stone streets among the Spanish colonial architecture and imagine how things were back in the 1600s.
No other city in the Caribbean has a greater variety of restaurants and night life. There are so many restaurants in this city that it is practically impossible even for those who live here to have visited them all. And it's a city that never sleeps. A great place to meet people. A lot of young single executives who come here to work end up leaving (if they leave) married to a Dominican.
Santo Domingo has great shopping. Major chains from all around the world have opened branches here and more will be opening soon. Discount stores offer great prices on designer brands, the leading shops offer clearance sales several times a year and there are many designer shops for more exclusive wear.
