    Philippines Lighthouses
The Philippines include more than 7000 islands stretching over 1750 km (1100 mi) of the western Pacific. The archipelago was a Spanish colony until the Spanish-American War of 1898, which brought the islands under U.S. administration. Japan occupied the islands during World War II (1942-45), and the country became independent shortly thereafter (1946). Luzon, the large island including the capital city Manila, dominates the northern part of the country. Mindoro and Palawan lie southwest of Luzon, stretching toward Borneo. Luzon has a long "tail" extending to the southeast, and south of this tail are the numerous islands known as the Visayas. The principal Visayas, grouped roughly in a circle around the Visayan Sea, are Masbate, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, and Samar. To the south of the Visayas, Mindanao is the largest island of all. In the list, lighthouses are grouped under the closest major island, although a great many of the lighthouses are actually located on small islands in the nearby shipping lanes. The lighthouse preservation movement is just getting started in the Philippines. Most of the historic light stations have been in very poor condition. However, the Philippines Coast Guard, which operates aids to navigation in the country, has recently repaired and renovated many of the towers. A new "adopt a lighthouse" program has begun, and there's hope that some of the light stations will be restored within the next few years.

    Government Information on Lighthouses
Responsibility for and eminence of lighthouses has been the responsibility of the federal government since 1789. The federal government at that time took the responsibility of colonial lighthouses from the states and Congress made appropriations for necessary funds. This began the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The administration for this Service switched hands between the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department many times before being consolidated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1939. He combined the Lighthouse Service with the Coast Guard where it has remained. Coast Guard employees rarely man the lighthouses at this time, but it is still an important part of the service's heritage and history. This is a guide to the information the government holds on lighthouses as well as to the sites they sponsor for lighthouses on the East coast.
    Sources for Information
National Park Service Within the National Park History Program, lighthouse information is abundant in the National Maritime Initiative. It was established to preserve America's maritime heritage. This site has 6 main directories for lighthouse information. Maritime Resources Here you can find lighthouses and light ships within the National Park System listed by state. Each lighthouse or ship is clickable to take you directly to that site.

[text only] NOTE: Due to the size of this file and the variations in the capability of printers, the USCG Historian’s Office recommends that you print this "Teacher’s Lighthouse Resource" piecemeal. Printing this file several pages at a time will result in a finished product of higher quality and in a format that more closely resembles that on the screen. LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.

Continuing east toward Savannah and the Atlantic coast, us80 has been Along with music and architecture, Macon also has a number of good places to eat.
    http://www.roadtripusa.com/us_80/georgia.html
ACROSS GEORGIA Georgia map Running across the middle of Georgia, US-80 follows the "fall line," a geological divide where rivers drop in a series of rapids from the higher Piedmont Plateau to the lower coastal plain. Because the fall line marked the limits of navigation in from the sea, settlements naturally sprung up along it: Columbus was founded on the banks of the falling Chattahoochee, while in the middle of the state, Macon was built along the Ocmulgee River. These, the second- and third-biggest cities, respectively, in this still-rural state, are the only real cities our route passes through, and both are fascinating places in very different ways. Apart from these exceptions, however, in its trip across Georgia US-80 takes in more than 300 miles of rolling countryside covered with dozens of dozens of small towns; runs along ancient-looking two-lane blacktop winding through thick hardwood-and-pine forests; and passes stately white-columned farmhouses with wide lawns and run-down tin-roofed shacks with yards full of rusting refrigerators and old bangers-on-blocks. In the west, you can detour to explore the surprisingly simple homes of two U.S. presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt at Warm Springs, and Jimmy Carter at Plains. At the heart of Georgia, Macon is home to the engaging Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and a prehistoric Mound City. Continuing east toward Savannah and the Atlantic Coast, US-80 has been replaced by the much faster I-16 freeway, bypassing numerous small towns across an agricultural region that was devastated during General Sherman’s Civil War "March to the Sea." Fortunately, Sherman spared the colonial capital, Savannah, a lushly verdant gem generally considered to be among the most beautiful cities in North America.
