Thank God for Ham Radio
Radio amateurs are continuing to provide vital assistance in the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief effort, more than two weeks after the huge storm devastated the southern US state of Louisiana and surrounding areas. With much of the state's conventional communication systems still inoperable, amateur radio remains the most reliable and effective method of coordinating the recovery operation. Radio amateurs are still in high demand in the region. The American Red Cross has recently made an urgent call for more hams to sign up to the relief effort. Following an initial flood of volunteers in the days immediately after the disaster, new volunteers are drying up. In addition, many radio operators who have been working non-stop since the hurricane struck are now in need of a break. Red Cross Alabama section manager Greg Sarratt, W4OZK, pointed out that there

International Lighthouse Weekend
In March of 2000 I completed my first DXpedition (MJ/K8PT). It was a wonderful experience and I wanted all the members of the Hiawatha Amateur Radio Association (my local club) to experience the rush of a different culture, exotic operating site, and working pileups. I wanted an experience that would hone our operating skills and excite the newer members and encourage them in HF and CW. How could we accomplish this goal , though, without the expense and effort of launching our own DXpedition?
Our answer: International Lighthouse Weekend. As residents living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (were referred to as Yoopers) we are privileged to live on the shoreline of Lake Superior, the largest, deepest, cleanest and coldest of all the Great lakes. It also has several lighthouses within driving distance.
I had run across the web site of the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (www.waterw.com/~weidner/arls.htm) and found out that the 2000 International Lighthouse weekend would be 18/19 August. It was not a contest but a time to honor the tradition of lighthouses, publicize the role they and the Coast Guard play in promoting safety at sea, and promote interest in Ham radio and the preservation of navigational aids. Last year's (1999) International Lighthouse/Lightship weekend had included over 218 lighthouses/lightships in 39 countries from around the world, and many on-the-air participants. In the year 2000 they were hoping to activate 400 lighthouses and lightships. Why couldn't we be one of them?

NKARC LIGHTHOUSE EVENT 2004 August 21 – 22, 2004, the North Kitsap Amateur Radio Club set up and operated a special event station, KC7Z, in conjunction with the International Lighthouse Weekend. The purpose of the weekend was to commemorate lighthouses around the world. The club set up its emergency communication van at the Point No Point Lighthouse Station at (where else?) Point No Point near the northernmost tip of Kitsap County (WA) at the entrance to Puget Sound. Project coordinator Bob Tomas, N7KTP, was called out of town by a family emergency 2 days before the event and asked Bill, W7ARC to take over the operation at the last minute. Through email and the club’s Yahoo Internet reflector, Bill put together a small crew and we were off to the races. The meager group collected 101 contacts with other hams and lighthouses from as far away as Brazil (PT2ND). We did manage to contact 4 lighthouses/lightships during the hours we were on the air. We did have one major distraction…the North American QSO party was also operating Saturday. The lighthouse at Point No Point was constructed in 1872 and was gradually improved as technology evolved over the years. During the weekend, the lighthouse was manned by volunteer docents (tour guides) who explained the history and operation to visitors. This undoubtedly helped increase the number of visitors to our station.

Outdoor Nova Scotia: "The Best Way to be Informed." Join Speaker's Corner , Outdoor Nova Scotia's outdoor discussion forum. Cameron Kicks-Off Lighthouse Conference by Vaughn Mullen, Managing Editor May 30th, 2000 White Point, N.S. - Lighthouse enthusiasts, preservationists and entrepreneurs from five nations have begun a five-day international conference at White Point, Queens County, Nova Scotia. The first International Lighthouse Conference is hosted by The South Shore Tourism Association under the auspices of the newly formed Atlantic Lighthouse Council. During opening ceremonies yesterday, keynote speaker, Cape Breton journalist and author, Silver Donald Cameron called the lighthouse "an important metaphor for our time...a metaphor for people caring for other people." Cameron suggested that with only three percent of Nova Scotia's 160 lighthouses protected from demolition and decay, it was "important for citizens to fight back ...to be part of a world-wide resistance to market barbarianism" characterized by government polices where money is more important than people. Lynn Perry, Executive Director of the South Shore Tourism Association explained to the more than 100 delegates at the conference, that the international event "was a dream come true." Perry and the regional tourism group have been meticulously planning for the conference for nearly 18 months. The conference is the first of its kind in Canada.
