LSI adds top scientists to interdisciplinary faculty
ANN ARBOR, Mich.- The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) today announced the hiring of six additional faculty members. The new LSI cohort, recruited from across the country, adds to the broad array of scientific approaches and disciplines that the Institute is assembling. “This influx of highly talented scientists from multiple disciplines showcases Michigan 's approach to advancing science. This group is a dynamic microcosm of the key research areas in the LSI,” said Alan Saltiel, LSI director. “They expand our universe of talent and will intensify our interactions and collaborations.” The new faculty in the LSI laboratory “without walls” work in fields such as evolutionary biology, cell biology, human genetics, oncology, pathology, and structural biology. Two of the six researchers are in computational biology, a new field of discovery at the interface of biology and information science. “It's the opportunity to talk and work alongside colleagues in other disciplines who have other ways of thinking that's the catalyst for discovery and it's what top researchers like this want,” Saltiel said.

Despite strong competition, the United Kingdom continues to lead the rest of Europe in commercializing life science with increased funding, improved facilities, and plans to create new research posts. The main challenge facing the biotechnology and pharmaceutical communities is explaining their work to a sometimes suspicious general public. Eli Lilly Forfás Gendaq, Ltd. Pfizer Central Research and Development Roche Products Limited Science Foundation Ireland University College London
Britain has a long tradition of excellence in life science research. In recent years, it has also played a major role in the biology business. In the mid-1990s it became the first European nation to stimulate a strong biotechnology industry. While Germany has overtaken it in terms of the absolute number of life science companies, the United Kingdom has maintained its lead in revenues from industrial biology. According to Evolution The picture has not been entirely bright. In the past five years the country has had to cope with the association of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Activists have tried to destroy fields sown with genetically modified crops and have broken into laboratories that use animals for medical experiments. The general public has expressed some discontent with scientific activities in those and other areas of life science. And academic scientists have complained loudly about the government's reluctance to spend money on research facilities.

FAQ

Modern approaches to the biological sciences have become increasingly based on the structure, function and location of the molecule. Complex technologies are required to measure, visualize and localize the molecule. This is chemistry and physics. The human genome project is just a very large covalent structure determination. Studies of brain function utilize imaging based on particle and nuclear physics. Even the detection of contaminated food products, for example, DNA fingerprinting of E. coli in hamburger, uses nucleic acid physical chemistry. Invention of new drugs depends on knowing the structure of key enzymes and receptors as well as understanding their functions. Solving biomolecular structures and exploring function is physics and chemistry. Unfortunately most physicians and molecular biologists depend upon experts in these individual technologies. The scientific leaders in the next generation will be those who understand the fundamental principles of the basic technologies as well as the integration of the biological phenomena. For this group of future leaders, a solid foundation in chemistry, mathematics and physics is an essential core. The College at Penn is well-situated to provide such a foundation to students with potential to become leaders in this field. The requisite basic science courses are already in place and need only to be integrated in a proper sequence. More importantly, faculty in the Medical, Dental, and Veterinary Schools as well as in the School of Arts and Sciences, routinely open their laboratories and research programs to talented undergraduates and so are available to provide the integrating and culminating research experiences for an undergraduate program in molecular life sciences. These issues are addressed in a similar context by Dr. Bruce Alberts, current president of the National Academy of Sciences in the February 6, 1998 issue of

Public service announcements (PSAs) educate citizens about issues that are difficult to deal with: homelessness, pollution, teen pregnancy, and alcoholism. Students from Gardiner Area High School in Gardiner, Maine create PSAs to give citizens information about these issues so they can think about them and take positive action. They create an original pilgrim and a corresponding "digiTale," a digital movie based on their character, which provides another medium to express a complete narrative beyond paper and pencil.
