Why the IGP?
Students do specialize in their course work and some aspects of their research and educational activities by choosing one of the nine IGP curricula . For the IGP faculty, the curricula serve to group researchers together into readily identified fields of study, although the interdisciplinary nature of modern research means that many faculty are listed in multiple curricula. For the student, the curriculum choice dictates an initial academic advisor and provides area-specific course options. Nevertheless, the choice of a particular curriculum does not restrict a student to any one department or to any particular set of faculty. Flexibility and ease in pursuing diverse interests are the hallmarks of graduate training in the IGP.
The University
Return to Top Northwestern University was established in 1851 to serve the people of the Northwest Territory, an area that now encompasses the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Although it began in downtown Chicago, in 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. The town that grew up around the University was named Evanston in honor of one of the University's founders, John Evans. After completing its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes with two faculty members and 10 students. By 1900, the University had grown to include seven undergraduate and graduate schools with 2,700 students.

Alternative Routes to Quantitative Literacy for the Life Sciences - a project supported by the National Science Foundation through Award DUE-9752339 to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for August 1, 1998 - July 31, 2000
Principal Investigator: Louis J. Gross. Co-Principal Investigators: Beth C. Mullin and Susan E. Riechert
Collaborators: Otto J. Schwarz, Monica Beals, Susan Harrell
The objective of this project is to start the process of enhancing the quantitative components of many undergraduate life science courses by focusing on the general biology sequence taken by science students. The project efforts will illustrate to students the importance of a diversity of quantitative tools to analyze life science problems, emphasize the utility of quantitative methods across the spectrum of life sciences, serve to reduce the perception by students that math is only needed for math courses, and enhance students appreciation for the importance of theory in the scientific process. The objectives will be met through development of appropriate quantitative examples, based upon data and illustrating key biological concepts, for entry-level biology courses. Dissemination of results will proceed through publication of a Primer of Quantitative Biology and a variety of web-based products.

Our Role T HE National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) carries out its functions through several offices. NASA's Office of Space Sciences sponsors the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC). NSSDC is primarily responsible for the archiving of space science data from past, present, and future NASA missions. We serve the science community and the general public in areas related to the space sciences (astrophysics and astronomy, solar physics, space plasma physics, lunar and planetary science). N SSDC is not intended as, nor is it, an encyclopedic source of information about NASA, its space activities, or space science in general. We provide data, and such information as we happen to have. There are many alternative sources of information about NASA, its activities, and space; several of these are identified below. Access to NSSDC's online WWW files, data, and information is free; nominal charges are made for dissemination of data on media, as, for instance, NSSDC's Planetary Images CD-ROM.

1 July 1999. Definitive version Preamble
Science for knowledge; knowledge for progress

    Science for peace

Science in society and science for society
    Preamble
  • We all live on the same planet and are part of the biosphere. We have come to recognize that we are in a situation of increasing interdependence, and that our future is intrinsically linked to the preservation of the global life-support systems and to the survival of all forms of life. The nations and the scientists of the world are called upon to acknowledge the urgency of using knowledge from all fields of science in a responsible manner to address human needs and aspirations without misusing this knowledge. We seek active collaboration across all the fields of scientific endeavour, that is the natural sciences such as the physical, earth and biological sciences, the biomedical and engineering sciences, and the social and human sciences. While the Framework for Action emphasizes the promise and the dynamism of the natural sciences but also their potential adverse effects, and the need to understand their impact on and relations with society, the commitment to science, as well as the challenges and the responsibilities set out in this Declaration, pertain to all fields of the sciences. All cultures can contribute scientific knowledge of universal value. The sciences should be at the service of humanity as a whole, and should contribute to providing everyone with a deeper understanding of nature and society, a better quality of life and a sustainable

ERIC/SMEAC Science Education Digest No. 3. HOW DO THE REFORMS OF THE 90S DIFFER FROM THOSE OF THE POST-SPUTNIK ERA? To quote an active science curriculum developer, "...the 1990s are not the 1960s" (Bybee, 1990:92). Advances in science and technology, information in philosophy and psychology, and changes in society have placed different demands on science education. According to Bybee, these demands are such that they cannot be met through revision of the 1960s curriculum or current textbook programsmajor reform is needed. An increased understanding of how students learn is reflected in materials and instructional approaches that reflect the idea that learners build or construct their own knowledge based on their observations and experiences. If learners' self-constructed knowledge differs from the concepts presented in formal science instruction, curriculum materials and instructional approaches must be used that bring about conceptual change. Learners must be involved in experiences that challenge their current conceptions. Then they must be provided with more experiences and given time to reconstruct more adequate explanations or new concepts. Finally, learners must be given the opportunity to apply the new concepts and evaluate their adequacy. Because more time is required to learn concepts, fewer concepts can be taught during the school year.
