The State as supporter of cultural institutions / Liechtenstein National Museum Liechtenstein National Museum In 1954, the Historical Society opened the Liechtenstein National Museum on the upper floor of what was then the new building of the Landesbank. In 1972, the museum moved into the renovated former Princely tavern. In the same year, the State established a foundation under public law to be responsible for the National Museum. In 1991, the National Museum was closed due to severe structural damage. The building was renovated from 1999 to 2003, expanded, and reopened in November 2003 with a permanent exhibition on the cultural and natural history of Liechtenstein as well as two special exhibitions. The responsibilities of the National Museum include the collection, preservation, documentation, and research of cultural and natural historical objects with relevance to Liechtenstein history and social studies. A further task is to convey knowledge through exhibitions, educational offerings, and counseling services. Since 1994, the National Museum has operated the historical Biedermann House in Schellenberg as a branch, documenting the old rural culture and lifestyle of Liechtenstein.

Due to its small size, Liechtenstein has never been a self-contained cultural area. A vibrant cultural exchange throughout the entire region has taken place for centuries. Through membership in international organizations, cultural collaboration has developed far beyond the boundaries of the country.
Liechtenstein, situated on an important North-South route, was exposed to various external influences over the centuries which left their mark on the cultural life of the country and helped shape its identity: names of meadows going back to the Romans, burial objects bearing witness to past cultures, buildings and churches designed by the architects of the sovereign, contrasting with the rural architecture. Not to be forgotten in this connection are the German Confederation, the Customs Treaties with Austria and Switzerland, various European agreements in the area of culture and accession to the European Economic Area (EEA), whose Member States not only cooperate in the fields of politics and economics, but also in educational and cultural matters.

    of Liechtenstein Background:
The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719; it became a sovereign state in 1806. Until the end of World War I, it was closely tied to Austria, but the economic devastation caused by that conflict forced Liechtenstein to conclude a customs and monetary union with Switzerland.
Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral) the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth. However, shortcomings in banking regulatory oversight have resulted in concerns about the use of the financial institutions for money laundering.
