UNITED NATIONS (CNN) A vote on a resolution lifting United Nations sanctions against Libya was delayed until Friday at the request of France, diplomats told CNN. France had said Tuesday it would veto any resolution to lift U.N. sanctions on Libya if a new settlement has not been reached between the North African country and families of victims of a 1989 French airliner bombing. A vote to lift the sanctions originally had been scheduled for Tuesday morning. At the request of the French, Britain which currently holds the U.N. Security Council presidency and has authored the draft resolution to lift the sanctions initially delayed the vote until early Tuesday afternoon. Libya agrees to send Lockerbie suspects to Netherlands
August 26, 1998
Web posted at: 4:55 p.m. EDT (2055 GMT) TRIPOLI, Libya (CNN) Libya has accepted an offer to bring two suspects in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am 103 to trial in the Netherlands, its foreign ministry announced Wednesday. The decision could mean the end of economic sanctions imposed on the North African country for refusing to turn over the suspects. It came just hours after the U.N. Security Council rejected a Libyan request to give it more time to study the offer made by Britain and the United States. Pam Am Flight 103 was en route from Britain to the United States when a bomb blew it out of the sky in December 1988. All 259 people including 189 Americans on the aircraft were killed, as were 11 people on the ground in the small village of Lockerbie, Scotland. Wreckage of Pan Am Flight 103
For nearly 10 years, Libya has refused to hand over the suspects Abdel Basset al-Megrahi and Lamen Khalifa Fhimah saying they would not get a fair trial in either the United States or Britain. Under the compromise plan, they would be tried in the Netherlands but before Scottish judges using Scottish law.

Libya 'ready to pay' for Lockerbie
Gadhafi held talks with UK Foreign Office minister Mike O'Brien TRIPOLI, Libya Libya is ready "in principle" to pay compensation for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, British officials said after a three-hour meeting between Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and a UK Foreign Office minister. Tripoli is considering making an announcement that it accepts "general responsibility" for the downing of Pan Am Flight 103 which killed 270 people, Foreign Office minister Mike O'Brien told the UK's Press Association after the talks. "Libya gave a clear signal that it wants to put Lockerbie, as an issue, behind it," a British Foreign Ministry spokesman told CNN. "At Col. Gadhafi's request, Mr. O'Brien set out, very clearly, the steps that Libya had to take for the lifting of sanctions. He reiterated the main points of the Security Council resolutions, making clear that these conditions must be met in full," the spokesman added. RESOURCES Lockerbie appeal He added that Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Abderrahmane Chalgam had said that as part of the process of fulfilling the remaining requirements, Libya was "in principle" willing to pay compensation, but the specifics of that offer had to be further addressed.

Libya faces Lockerbie pressure
LONDON, England Libya is facing mounting pressure to pay compensation to victims' families after a Libyan was convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing in which 270 people died. Abdel Baset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi , 48, was found guilty of murder on Wednesday, and sentenced to life in prison in Glasgow. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years. A second defendant, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah , 44, was found not guilty and is expected to return to Libya. After the verdict was announced, Libya called for a complete lifting of U.N. sanctions imposed after the Lockerbie bombing, and said it sought better relations with the United States. However, U.S. President George W. Bush said at a meeting with members of Congress that Libya should remain isolated until Gadhafi agrees to "accept responsibility for this act and to compensate the families."

Relatives focus anger on Libya
LONDON, England Relatives of Lockerbie bomb victims say the verdict points to state-sponsored terrorism by Libya. Daniel Cohen, the father of a 20-year-old college student killed in the bombing, said: "The important thing is not just these two guys, but the connection with Libya." Three Scottish judges sitting in the Netherlands found one of two accused Libyan men guilty and one not guilty of being behind the 1988 bombing in which 270 died. As the verdicts were read in the Camp Zeist courtroom a leader of the British Lockerbie victims' families, Jim Swire, collapsed and had to be led from the Camp Zeist courtroom. The BERBERS
Descendants of the Libyan Amazons ?
T here are many cross connections between the Berber people living in North Africa and the ancient stories of the Libyan Amazons!
Very ancient rock engraving of a female(?) archer from Wadi In Habeter in southwestern Libya. Join in a virtual discovery tour! First of all, the Libyan Amazons were located in that part of Africa where the Berber peoples lived and still live. The Berbers are supposed to be aborigines. The Berbers call themselves in their language. There is definitely a strong similarity between the words and A further astonishing fact is the preeminent position of women in Berber society, though it depends to which extent the Berbers were absorbed by the Arabs. For about 1300 years the Berber peoples were threatened and in fact for the most part conquered and at last absorbed by Arab invaders.
There was a significant historical event at the first Arab invasion about 700 A.D. It was a female Berber leader named Kahina , who very successfully put up a fierce resistance to the Arab conquerors and even succeeded in driving them back, though in the end she was defeated and lost her life! Kahina led her life in the tradition of famous Amazon queens like Penthesilea . Isn't it very plausible that she was a descendant of the famous Libyan Amazons?
