Lessons from the Library
April is School Library Media Month, a great time to reexamine your students' library know-how! Do your students know diddly about Dewey? Do they believe that "biography" is a television show? Do they think call numbers belong in a telephone's memory? Are your students convinced that a "librarian" is a person born under the sign of Libra? If so, it's time to reel them in and get them reacquainted with reading, researching, and the library! Included: Five fun lessons to reinforce library skills! During your April observance of School Library Media Month, celebrate with lessons that encourage your students to rediscover the wealth of knowledge found in your school's library! Library skills can often get lost among the rigors of any curriculum, but these are the skills needed to complete tasks adults face every day finding information, summing it up, internalizing it, and sharing it. This month, schedule a visit to the library in person or online to sharpen your students' research skills!

Using Outcome-Based Education in the Planning and Teaching of New Information Technologies by Michael Lorenzen Outcome-based education is a method of teaching that focuses on what students can actually do after they are taught. All curriculum and teaching decisions are made based on how best to facilitate the desired outcome. This leads to a planning process in reverse of traditional educational planning. The desired outcome is selected first and the curriculum is created to support the intended outcome. This fits library instruction very well in that librarians want students to have certain information seeking skills (such as the ability to use the online card catalog) as an outcome of library instruction. This paper will seek to help administrators and public service librarians use those portions of outcome-based education that could prove useful in the library during both the planning and teaching stages of a new information technology. As such, an examination of the literature addressing outcome-based education is important. LITERATURE REVIEW I will attempt to portray outcome-based education as it is taught by OBE practitioners. A recent definition of outcome-based education comes from James Towers. He wrote, "Education that is outcome-based is a learner-centered, results-oriented system founded on the belief that all individuals can learn" (p. 19). Towers listed four points to this system that are necessary to make it work. First, what the student is to learn must be clearly identified. Second, the student's progress is based on demonstrated achievement. Third, multiple instructional and assessment strategies need to be available to meet the needs of each student. And finally, adequate time and assistance need to be provided so that each student can reach the maximum potential (Towers, 1996).

You can visit Gary Paulsen at his official website
The following is some biographical information about him. Gary Paulsen was born on May 17,l939 in Minnesota. During the first few years of his life, he was raised by his grandmother and several aunts because his father was stationed in Europe during World War II. His mother worked in a factory. He lived overseas after the war in the Phillippines between 1946-49. After that time, he was constantly moving because of his father's military career. His parents were alcoholics and eventually Gary had to move out and live with relatives and be self supporting.
He found security and support from his grandmother and aunts, but he also found comfort in books. A librarian offered him a library card while he was warming himself from the cold. He read constantly, even as much as a book a day. Ever since he was fifteen, he worked many jobs to support himself.

    Overview
Port of Entry: Immigration is a sample lesson highlighting the immigrant experience in American life. Students assume the role of historical detective and travel back in time to the turn of the century. As historical detectives, they search for clues to the past in images and primary source documents from the American Memory collections. Students begin their detective work by examining a series of photographs depicting life and work on New York's Lower East side. They visit other immigrant neighborhoods, one in the Midwest, another in Texas. In their search for clues to the immigrant experience, students take an online site visit to Ellis Island, the portal to America for millions of immigrants arriving from Europe. Along the way students learn about the different waves of immigrants that transformed America into a multicultural "nation of nations." Students complete their investigation by reading the immigrant stories documented through personal interviews collected by the Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s. These life histories from American Memory contain compelling firsthand accounts of immigrant life in America.

This summer we have partnered with Ipsos Reid to conduct a series of surveys across the country with parents, teachers, academics and librarians in order to measure media literacy in Canadian homes and to determine the status of media education in Canadian schools, universities and libraries. Responses to these surveys will provide us with the information we need to create programs and resources that address those issues and topics that are important to you. A key part of this research is this online survey for teachers and librarians. The survey comprises 25 questions and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. No personally-identifiable information is required and all responses are confidential.
