    The Meaning of Literature
    S
omeone once told me that you couldn't ask a student to write about what a poem, or any work of literature, means. Why not? Meaning is something which a person takes away from a work of art and therefore it can be intensely personal. It can also determine if a person deems the work of art to be successful or not. This is the handout to introduce the concept. The Meaningful Assignment This is the poetry assignment where each student gets to explain what a poem of his or her choosing means to him, or her. The student should analyze the meaning on the basis of the five questions and make some definitive statements about the poem. It can be a song in which case the playing of the song will be part of the presentation. Tell the students to NOT pick a poem with overwhelming negative connotations such as a favourite relative's pick for what to recite at the funeral after his death. I have had a student break down in tears in front of the class while analyzing a Garth Brook's song that related to cancer, of which the student's mother died. Independent Novel Study Here is an independent novel study that takes into account every difference in ability in your class. Each student picks his or her own novel and does any number of assignments that up to 50 marks. They can do two twenty mark and one ten mark assignments or any other combination. The assignments are a mix of creative and applied writing and art activities. If a student earns more than 50 marks give him or her the marks as a bonus however, put a limit on how many bonus marks a student can get or you will be marking assignments by the truckload. This was used in a de-streamed Grade 9 class.

There aren't many library lesson plans here right now. There are several reasons for that but the solution is readily available. All Titles are Links Library Orientation This is a low key way to introduce a junior grade to the library and throw in some rudimentary computer research skills at the same time. Take it up in the library either during the same period or the next day.
      Using the Library Media Center
Harriett Hyman is a media specialist at Johnsonville High School in the small rural district of Florence, South Carolina. This orientation is much more intensive than mine above; she uses it for her Grade nines. You will be able to adapt the handout for use in your library very simply by inserting some call letters and substituting any books which you do not have. Harriett can be reached at HEHyman@aol.com

Expectations raised by the Revolution's rhetoric of liberty resulted in many African Americans petitioning the courts to seek their freedom. Elizabeth "Mum Bett" Freeman was one of those people. Her strength, competence, and self-respect positively affected all people who knew her. In this lesson students will: learn to use primary and secondary source documents to piece together elements from one woman's life as they become familiar with a significant period in history and the historical figure Elizabeth Freeman; gain some understanding of how court action can affect social practice; make decisions about what kinds of information to include or leave out when creating a documentary portrait of someone's life.

Endorsed by: These lesson plans are the result of the work of the teachers who have attended the Columbia Education Center's Summer Workshop. CEC is a consortium of teachers from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops. Date: May 1994 Grade Level(s): Subject(s):

Description: The Native American has for hundreds of years been stereotyped. To help children understand that what they see in movies and television is not always historically accurate, I teach this unit. Goal: The purpose to this unit and activities is to motivate and to make learning fun and interesting, while covering most subjects and concepts required by the district's curriculum. This unit can be taught at any time of the school year. I've done it in October and ending it at Thanksgiving, when the parents join us for a Thanksgiving dinner, and also in January and ending it at the end of February or the middle of March where we culminate it with a play for the parents, community and student body.
