Judy's Workshops Winners! Books Kids Will Sit Still For Selecting Books for Children Literature and Library Skills ... BER Seminars LITERATURE AND LIBRARY SKILLS:
An Integrated Approach Some librarians groan, "I hate teaching library skills. They're so boring." If that means handing out worksheets from library skills books and having children fill in answers, then I agree. What may be boring, however, is not the theme of the lesson but the manner in which it's being taught. The library curriculum is one that needs to be covered in the library on an ongoing basis. We want children to become lifelong learners and library fanatics, to assume responsibility for the knowledge they chose to pursue, and to grow. Unlike teachers who may depend on a teacher's manual to plan out their lessons, librarians are wholly responsible for the way they set up and implement each unit. They develop stimulating literature-based library skills lessons for classes, work cooperatively with classroom teachers to serve their needs, as well as provide students with an intensive, enjoyable and illuminating indoctrination into the depths and delights of the library. Each librarian has the challenge to develop an organized, creative, and innovative library curricula that expands and reinforces library, literature, critical thinking, and research skills year by year, building on prior knowledge, with a goal of children being independent, comfortable and competent in any library.

    Hertfordshire Library Skills Training Project
This summary was produced as an introduction to the Project This Library Skills Training Project is being funded by The Hertfordshire Education and Development Consortium. Ann Poyner and Janet Reynolds are undertaking this project working as Library Skills Training Facilitators. Their initial task will be to visit every Trust library within the Consortium area to review existing end user training, with particular reference to computer based information systems and identify those areas where support and training are required. One of the key findings of a Consortium User Survey undertaken early this year was that one third of library users never make use of electronic databases. The main aim of this project is to increase the availability and accessibility of training in the use of a variety of databases to non-medical staff groups. A Consortium priority is to reach primary care staff and it is hoped that a programme of visits to Primary Care Groups can be arranged to discuss the work of the Project with a view to contributing to their training and development plans. Skills training sessions can be offered on a one to one or small group basis covering literature and database searching together with accessing the Internet for health care information. Ann or Janet can arrange to visit a particular practice or location covering a cluster of practices with their laptop to demonstrate databases and Internet searching. Training needs can be assessed prior to their visit so that a tailor made training session can be devised.

    The Library of Congress
    Lesson Framework
Using primary sources in research papers and projects is a time-honored way to engage students with primary historical materials. Yet primary sources can be incorporated into all phases of instruction. This framework will help you use primary sources throughout your teaching. The framework is divided into four sections:
    Rationale for Using Primary Sources
For years, historians and other educators have understood the value of primary sources in K-12 education. Two key reasons for including primary sources in the curriculum are:
  • Primary sources expose students to multiple perspectives on great issues of the past and present. History, after all, deals with matters that were furiously debated by the participants. Interpretations of the past are furiously debated as well, among historians, policy makers, politicians, and ordinary citizens. By working with primary sources, students can become involved in these debates.
  • Primary sources help students develop knowledge, skills, and analytical abilities. By dealing directly with primary sources, students engage in asking questions, thinking critically, making intelligent inferences, and developing reasoned explanations and interpretations of events and issues in the past and present.
