    Executive summary
Both information skills and information technology skills are seen as essential parts of a wider concept of information literacy.
For the development of the information literate person a model is proposed based on seven sets of skills developing from a basic competence in library and IT skills. The model attempts to address the key question of different levels of higher education work.
There is evidence of recent growth of activity in UK institutions in the area of information skills development.
It is recommended that institutions consider more explicitly, as part of the development of learning and teaching strategies, the size and scope of their own approach to information handling skills. Good practice from institutions at home and abroad should be more widely studied.
Background and genesis of this paper
    We considered the following questions:
    • Why are information skills important?

Good libraries help create a literate public. A literate public demands good libraries. Libraries of all types are leveraging their investments in technology to generate additional support for programs and services that support an information literate populace. Increased public awareness of the importance of these resources provides an opportunity to build on established programs and makes the case for expanded library support in the information age. As information professionals, librarians have the opportunity and responsibility to educate community leaders and the public about the expanded role of libraries. The American Library Association provides leadership and support in the form of professional education, legislative advocacy, demonstration projects, public awareness, and other activities. Public libraries that have invested in strong adult literacy programs have realized significant returns both in building a stronger user base and increased funding.

There seems to be clear and widespread agreement among the public and educators that students need to be proficient computer usersstudents need to be "computer literate." However, while districts are spending a great deal of money on technology, there seems to be only a vague notion of what computer literacy really means. - Can the student who operates a computer well enough to play "Doom" be considered computer literate? - Will a student who has used computers in school only for running tutorials or an integrated learning system have the skills necessary to survive in our society? - Will the ability to do basic word processing be sufficient for students entering the workplace or post-secondary education? Clearly not. In too many schools, most teachers and students still use computers only as the equivalent of expensive flash cards or electronic worksheets. The productivity side of computer use in the general content area curriculum is neglected or grossly underdeveloped (Moursund, 1995).

Welcome to Library and Archives Canada's Learning Centre bringing quality educational products and services to teachers and students. Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has a collection strong in history, literature and music. The Learning Centre allows us to open our vaults to all Canadians by making some of our treasures available online. Students gain access to material that will enrich their learning experience. The Learning Centre should be considered as a work in progress. New material will be added as it is produced. We invite you to visit our site from time to time to see the latest developments. Teachers and students will find websites, educational tools, and digitized primary sources (printed documents, diaries, maps, illustrations, paintings, manuscripts, and printed and recorded music) from LAC holdings. These resources stimulate students' imaginations and develop their critical thinking skills, as well as help teachers make Canadian history, literature and music come to life. If you are an educator, be sure to have a look at "For Teachers." You'll find comprehensive teaching units and strategies, lesson plans, ideas and activities for the classroom, quizzes, games and guides on using primary sources, as well as workshops for professional development. What are Key Skills?
Key skills are those generic skills which everyone needs to be a fully rounded and well educated person, regardless of your academic subject. They include Written, Oral and Visual Communication Skills, Information Skills, Working with Others, IT Skills, Working with Numbers, Solving Problems and Improving your own Learning and Performance. Many of these skills can also be developed through activities outside the curriculum - especially in hobbies, clubs and societies, sports, Student Union activities and work experience.
    [from Key Skills at UCL
Why do I need Key Skills?
They allow you to gain more from your academic studies by helping you to manage your workload better and by encouraging you to reflect on your learning and the ways you gather and manage information. Key Skills - as generic skills - will be needed in your employment after university in addition to your specialist knowledge. By developing these skills now, you can help make the transition to employment more smoothly later on.
