In Praise of the Libertarian Party by Harry Browne June With the Libertarian Party (LP) on television last weekend choosing its presidential nominee, it’s time for the smug, superior types to come out of the woodwork and tell us what a sorry spectacle the party is. Every four years around this time we get statements like these from libertarians who aren’t in the party: " The Libertarian Party has finished its regularly scheduled exercise in futility ." " The LP has displayed a genius for assigning itself a role in American politics akin to irrelevance ." As though that weren’t bad enough, disgruntled party members also level broadsides when they don’t get what they want: " The LP attempted to shoot itself in the foot by not nominating [Aaron Russo] for president ." I recently received an email message from someone asking, "If the LP was a stock that you (or I) had bought 20 years ago, based on its performance would you still be holding onto it?" as though I would choose a political party or organization of any kind in the same way I would choose a stock.

This is a complicated subject about which I would have a good deal to say if I had the time to compose a careful post. But I do want to make one point.
In hindsight, I think that the creation of the Libertarian Party has been very detrimental to the political influence of libertarians. Some voters (not many lately) and, more importantly, those libertarians who are interested in engaging in political activism (which does not include me) have been drained from both political parties, rendering both parties less libertarian at the margin.
Put another way, in proportional voting parliamentary systems, there are many political parties and governments are often formed by organizing a coalition in which they must cater to smaller parties, especially when holding a only slim paliamentary majority. In a winner-take-all first-past-the-post electoral systemlike we have in elections for both Congress and the presidencythe major parties are each themselves coalitions of political interests. To win an election, they need to gather a coalition of voters to get over 50% of the vote, so the marginal voters become important to them. Of course, they cannot make efforts to reach marginal voters that completely alienate their "base" (which is one the problems facing Democrats at the moment).

http://users.aol.com/mrjeffchlg/libboat.htm
The Libertarian Party is Missing the Boat
The American Electorate is dissatisfied with the two major political parties. Recent polls suggest that a majority of Americans yearn for a viable third party that reflects their values and better serves their interests. With great fanfare, Ross Perot and his supporters established the Reform Party in California in eighteen days; they expect similar success in other States. But, where is the Libertarian Party? After all, the Libertarian platform espouses most of the tenets of the so-called "Republican Revolution," and the Libertarians were saying it first. The libertarian philosophy is gaining wider acceptance throughout America, especially in the West. The Libertarian Party, however, suffers from disorganization and parochialism. The Party has thus failed to assume its proper role as the real alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. Libertarianism emphasizes individual freedom, small government, and low taxes. Libertarians stress personal responsibility, with minimal government intrusion on the individual's ability to succeed or fail. Established in 1971, the Libertarian Party has gradually swelled to a national registry of 120,000 citizens; 70,000 of these registered Libertarians live in California. The Party faithful comprise 12,000 dues-paying members, 2,000 of which reside in California. With their focus on the individual, however, Libertarians tend to distrust government and other social institutions. This philosophy impedes Party growth; it's difficult to build a political party with members who don't believe in political parties. Therefore, most Libertarian Party policy is shaped at the local level, with little coordination between County Chapters or oversight by State and National leaders.

Recent Entries September 03, 2003 My First Political Party! Updates below. So I went to the September Business Meeting of the Travis County Libertarian Party , the first time I've ever made the effort to get this close to political activism. I made the decision to do this after finally choosing to act upon a message from the Austin Liberator e-mail list. The message promoted the next event in the Distinguished Speaker Series : Ed Clark from Austin Energy , who'll be speaking about deregulation, the California energy mess, the recent northeast blackout, and other things. After calling Rick McGinnis (a very friendly guy) to confirm a slot, I figured I should check out the TCLP and get a personal feel for the people there. They usually meet at the Old Quarry Library on 7501 Village Center Drive off Far West Blvd from 6:45pm till 8. I screwed up and didn't find the place in time back last year when I resolved to check them out, but I got there early and made it fine tonight. The atmosphere was relaxed and mostly productive. Patrick Dixon, the TCLP Chair, got things moving. Having the attitude I have towards formal organizations, it took me a bit to adjust to the format of the proceedings. Recognizings, reports, agendas, minutes, and all that. I apparently picked a good night to drop by, as several folks mentioned attendance was the highest they'd seen in some time.

What do Libertarians Believe In?
Libertarians believe in free markets and free minds. We don't believe that anyone should initiate force against another person to achieve their goals. This means that it's as wrong to take tax money from someone to fund a welfare program as it is to hold someone up at gunpoint to steal their wallet. To us, force is force, whether it's a gun or a law. Libertarians believe government's only purpose is to protect people from violence and coercion. They value individual responsibility, and tolerate economic and social diversity.

Does the Libertarian Party hurt libertarianism?
Randy Barnett, writing at the Volokh Conspiracy, urges libertarians to refocus on getting libertarian candidates to succeed within the two-party system: Libertarians should stop thinking of parties as teams and think of them instead as the playoffs. In NFL football terms, The Democrats are the AFC and the Republicans the NFC. To get into the Superbowl, you have to survive the season and the playoffs in your respective conference. In effect, Libertarians want to form their own league which no one but themselves is interested in watching. And they assure themselves of never making the playoffs much less the Superbowl. The analogy is apt, especially because of ballot access laws that institutionalize the two parties in many states (Oklahoma, particularly), the way legislative bodies organize themselves into majority and minority caucuses, and a voting system that penalizes third-party votes vote for a third-party candidate in our first-past-the-post system and you probably help your least favorite candidate. In another post , he points out that the existence of the Libertarian Party drains libertarian activists from the two major parties, giving them less influence.

  • The Christian Coalition periodically attempts to flex its political power. This political organization using a religious name is seeking a right-wing, "family-values" platform, claiming to speak for all Christians of America, though there are many Christians of various denominations who disagree with this platform, not to mention the many non-Christians who are also citizens of the U.S.A. and who would rather this not be declared a "Christian Nation." They all refer to the same philosophy. The problem is that the most natural names for this philosophy have been consistently used by other groups: "Socialist-Libertarian" is used by Noam Chomsky and his groupies, and "Eco-Libertarian" tends to denote the position that the environment will be adequately protected by a system of strong property rights and no government regulation.
