LIBERTARIAN PARTY The Libertarian Party is American as apple pie. Like you, we have jobs, businesses, families and dreams. We've entered the political arena to restore liberty and American values. We're working toward a government that taxes and spends less, and won't interfere with your personal life. If you describe yourself as socially tolerant and fiscally responsible, you're a Libertarian! We believe you - not the government - should decide how to run your life, checkbook, retirement, education and family. The Libertarian Party supports your rights to:
  • Keep what you earn. Reduce or eliminate taxes whenever possible. Run your own business and enjoy your property. Reducing regulations and paperwork creates more jobs, higher pay, and lower prices. Educate your children as you see fit. Choose your own lifestyle. The government shouldn't consider you a criminal because of your choices in relationships, recreation or medical treatment.

Editorial
Let's Fix the Platform By Carl S. Milsted, Jr. As I have stated in my previous column, the Libertarian Party remains small and loses virtually all of its campaigns because our message is too radical. This is not to say that Americans hate freedom; I am saying that Americans reject radical change of any form.
America needs a libertarian party. The Republican and Democratic parties have put freedom issues on the backburner, leaving the authoritarians and the special interests to incrementally rob us of liberty. America desperately needs a libertarian political party. It does not have one. The Libertarian Party is not a political party; it is a church, an assembly of people of like mind who gather to reaffirm certain strong values. It has the same relationship to politics that the freemasons have to laying bricks. This is not to say that the Libertarian party serves no purpose. America also needs clubs and outreach organizations that promote the ideals of liberty. It needs organizations like Cato, Reason magazine, the Institute for Justice, and so forth. The LP belongs in this category, not in the category of a true political party.

[Adapted from a flyer distributed by the Libertarian Party.]
1. What is a Libertarian?
To put it simply, Libertarians believe that you have the right to live your life as you wish, without the government interfering as long as you don't violate the rights of others. Politically, this means Libertarians favor rolling back the size and cost of government, and eliminating laws that stifle the economy and control people's personal choices.
2. Are Libertarians liberal or conservative?
Libertarians are neither. Unlike liberals or conservatives, Libertarians advocate a high degree of both personal and economic liberty. In a sense, Libertarians "borrow" from both sides to come up with a logical and consistent whole but without the exceptions and broken promises of Republican and Democratic politicians.
For example, Libertarians agree with conservatives about freedom in economic matters; in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable rather than government welfare. But Libertarians also agree with liberals on personal tolerance; in favor of people's right to choose their own personal habits and lifestyles.

When you sign up to vote, you choose whether you want to join a political party. A political party is a group of people who share the same views about how the government should be run and what it should do. There are 8 political parties in California. Party What They Stand For Top Priorities American Independent The American Independent Party stands for traditional moral values and the God-given rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. http://www.libertarian.org.vt.edu/who.htm
    What is the Libertarian Party?
The Libertarian Party believes, as did Thomas Jefferson, that that government is best that governs least. We believe that as long as people are peaceful and honest, the government has no business interfering in their lives. Along with personal freedom comes economic freedom. We believe that governments have no right to seize the fruits of an individual's labor without his or her consent. Libertarians seek a return to the basic principles that made America great. We support an unfettered free market economy as the best way to provide abundance and prosperity for all. We defend America's traditional civil liberties and personal freedoms as the foundation of a tolerant society. We believe in the protection of people from dishonest business through liability in the courts. We endorse a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America's Founding Fathers. Unlike the two major parties, for whom the only debate is whether the government should be enormous or merely huge, we believe the size and scope of government must be substantially reduced. Individuals should have sovereignty over their own lives as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others. The Libertarian Party supports the abolition of the Income Tax, one of the greatest infringements on individual liberty in the world today. Money that you earn should be yours to dispose of as you choose. According to the Census Bureau, 47% of our national income goes to various federal, state, and local taxes. It is time to end this confiscation of our earnings and get the government out of our pocketbooks.

    Introduction to the Libertarian Party
Note: This page was produced by members of the MIT Libertarians. To our knowledge, all factual information is correct. However, the Libertarian Party Home Page is far more official.
    What is Libertarianism?
Libertarianism is a political philosphy. The term "libertarian" dates at least as far back as 1789, arising from the turbulence of both the American and French revolutions. There are probably as many "strict" definitions of the term as there are libertarians. But in general, libertarians combine the strong defense of individual civil liberties, due process, social tolerance (religous, lifestyle choices, etc.), open immigration, and nonconformity espoused by modern day "liberals" with an equally strong defense of free markets, private property, free trade, radically reduced government and international noninterventionism often espoused by conservatives. In the World's Smallest Political Quiz you can begin to see how this combination arises. The traditional left-right axis between liberal and conservative covers only part of the picture. Essentially both sides want government involved in a good deal of a priavte citizen's life, it's only a question of where. Liberals tend to favor government intervention and planning in economic matters, but leave social issues up to the individual. Conservatives tend to favor government direction of social issues, personal behavior, and "tough on crime" civil liberties intrusions, but leave economics to the private sector. Where does that leave people who want "free speech" AND "less taxes"? Or people who dislike both?

We have some new legislators, new partisan leadership and new opportunities to improve the state's economy, protect small business and defend our personal freedoms against government intrusion. Unfortunately, some of our elected representatives are discarding these opportunities in favor of using our governmental process to grandstand. Platform
Key tenets of the Libertarian Party platform include the following:
    • a mostly unregulated free-market economy, strong civil liberties including free speech, freedom of association, Sexual freedom, and the right to keep and bear arms, a foreign policy of Non-intervention, peace , and free trade , and opposition to drug prohibition.
Libertarians claim that their platform follows from the ultimate value of individual liberty : the right of individuals to exercise sole dominion over their own lives and property, and to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to do the same. To this end, Libertarians want to reduce the size of government (eliminating many of its current functions entirely), and cut taxes.
