Last week Liberian President Charles Taylor declared a state of emergency after LURD rebels (Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy) attacked Klay, some 35km (22 miles) from the capital, Monrovia.
Defence Minister Daniel Chea has said the government army is fighting an unfair war because of an international ban on selling weapons to the Liberian Government. Forces loyal to President Taylor have been fighting rebel factions in the north of the country since 1999. Does LURD have Charles Taylor on the run? Is LURD an acceptable alternative to the Taylor regime? What solution do you have for Liberia's current problems? This debate is now closed. Read your comments below. Your reaction: After many years of war, warlords in Liberia should realise that there are no winners in civil wars. If they really have their nation at heart as they claim, they shouldn't destroy it. Rather, they should help rebuild their war-ravaged country and deepen democracy in Liberia. After Taylor's term is over, the decision of the majority will show who governs the country. War, truly, is a monster that devours its own people.

The Liberian army says it is poorly equipped
Liberian President Charles Taylor has declared a state of emergency as armed rebels appeared to be gaining ground on the capital Monrovia.
The president made the announcement hours after rebels attacked Klay, just 35km (22 miles) north of the city, although he made no reference to the fighting. Forces loyal to President Taylor have been fighting rebel factions in the north of the country since 1999. Earlier this week, Defence Minister Daniel Chea said the government army was fighting an unfair war because of an international ban on selling weapons to the Liberian Government. Last week, the rebels briefly captured the village of Sawmill just 80km from Monrovia, causing thousands of refugees to flee. Rebels poised "The arms embargo and the government's inability to fully cater to the economic and social well-being of its citizens warrant the declaration of a state of emergency," Mr Taylor said on state radio and television.
Thousands of refugees have fled the latest fighting
"The state of emergency will be lifted only circumstances which warranted this action are removed," he said.

MONROVIA, 11 July (IRIN) - Liberia's interim government, under fire from international donors for corruption, diverted US $2 million that had been earmarked to pay salary arrears to civil servants and instead bought jeeps for politicians, Budget Director David Zarlee said on Monday.
The government allocated nine million dollars in Liberia's 2004-5 budget to pay 18 months of salary arrears to government employees who have been waiting for wage packets from as far back as 2002 and 2003 when former president Charles Taylor was in power.
But only US $1.5 million was actually handed over, so civil servants went on strike last week to demand all their back pay.
Zarlee told reporters that: "US $2 million... was used to procure Grand Cherokee jeeps for members of the National Transitional Legislative Assembly."

Thousands fled Liberia for the US during civil conflict
By Jonathan Paye-Lahley in Monrovia The Liberian government has deployed police across the country to arrest any one found selling or buying photographs of Osama Bin Laden. He is the prime suspect named by the US for the terror attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Police Director Paul Mulbah said anyone now involved with the photos would be treated as "terrorists". Bin Laden has denied any responsibility.
Arrest for Liberians selling or buying Bin Laden posters
The weekend directive followed a brisk trade by newspaper vendors and street sellers in the capital of pirated and copied photographs of Saudi dissident Bin Laden. The Police Director said although people buying the pirated photographs of Bin Laden were doing so "out of mere curiosity", it could give a negative interpretation of the situation. Thousands fled He said if the sales were left to go on unchecked, it would appear as if Liberians were happy with the Saudi-born "terrorist."

Manage alerts What is this? MONROVIA, Liberia (Reuters) Liberia's two rebel groups said Monday they wanted the head of a transitional government appointed in October to quit, before they would start to disarm their fighters in line with a peace deal. In a joint statement, the two rebel factions known as LURD and Model accused the chairman of the interim government, Gyude Bryant, of lack of transparency and confusion in the way his administration in the West African country is run. "The LURD and Model...are vehemently and unconditionally calling for the immediate, uncompromising and peaceful removal and subsequent replacement of Gyude Bryant as Chairman of the NTLG (National Transitional Government of Liberia) before the commencement of disarmament," the statement said. The rebels, who joined a government formed after an August peace accord meant to draw a line under 14 years of civil war, have complained about some key government appointments.

Deeply concerned that Liberia has acquired notoriety of a destabilizer in the West African sub-region and, that such an unwelcome image ought to be reversed in favor of the institution of democratic changes which will facilitate harmony between Liberia and its neighbors; Disturbed by the growing level of rebel military campaigns in Lofa and Nimba counties against the Government of Liberia on the one hand, and on the other hand, President Taylor's unrelenting support for rebel movements currently destabilizing countries sharing common borders with Liberia; Bearing in mind that the gains made by the Economic Community of West African States, the Organization of African Unity, the United Nations and Liberians at bringing a closure to the civil war in Liberia and facilitating democratic elections are in danger of failure;
