Eva Acqui introduces us to a poet whose country has oscillated between war and peace since 1989
I am re-reading his book, Thinking Through the Times , wondering where its author may be now, where the other artists might be, whether they are in Liberia or are simply reduced to silent, very silent memories.
In the mid 80s, the local newspapers in Liberia would publish many poems, most of them very good, rich in feeling and in words. They were not written by world-famous, but local poets, feeding on the rich vein of their tribal tradition and culture, richness hardly made available to the English versions. At that time, Liberians were discovering that they had unlimited resources in their culture, and they put some interesting shows on television. One of them was the Malawala Balawala, with heroes from daily life, speaking Liberian English; another was Bendu Sudan, a folk drama modernized here and there, which could have been a masterpiece of the horror genre. Shows of local music and dance were frequent, interesting to both local people and foreigners too.

The Kpelle in central and western Liberia is the largest ethnic group. Americo-Liberians who are descendants of freed slaves that arrived in Liberia early in 1821 make up an estimated 5% of the population.
There also are sizable numbers of Lebanese, Indians, and other West African nationals who make up a significant part of Liberia's business community. Because of the 1989-1996 civil war and its accompanying problem of insecurity, the number of Westerners in Liberia is low and confined largely to Monrovia and its immediate surroundings. The Liberian constitution restricts citizenship only to people of Negro descent.
Liberia was traditionally noted for its hospitality and academic institutions, iron mining and rubber industry booms, and cultural skills and arts and craft works. But political upheavals beginning in the 1980s and the brutal 7-year civil war (1989-1996) brought about a steep decline in the living standards of the country, including its education and infrastructure.

Overview Portuguese explorers established contacts with Liberia as early as 1461 and named the area Grain Coast because of the abundance of grains of Malegueta Pepper. In 1663 the British installed trading posts on the Grain Coast, but the Dutch destroyed these posts a year later. There were no further reports of European settlements along the Grain Coast until the arrival of freed slaves in the early 1800s.
Liberia, which means "land of the free," was founded by freed slaves from the United States in 1820. These freed slaves, called Americo-Liberians, first arrived in Liberia and established a settlement in Christopolis now Monrovia (named after U.S. President James Monroe) on February 6, 1820. This group of 86 immigrants formed the nucleus of the settler population of what became known as the Republic of Liberia.
Thousands of freed slaves from America soon arrived during the following years, leading to the formation of more settlements and culminating in a declaration of independence on July 26, 1847 of the Republic of Liberia. The idea of resettling free slaves in Africa was nurtured by the American Colonization Society (ACS), an organization that governed the Commonwealth of Liberia until independence in 1847. The new Republic of Liberia adopted American styles of life and established thriving trade links with other West Africans.

For information on these publications click on the links. Instability has been the primary characteristic of Liberia during the 1990s. In calmer times it is a beautiful lush country dominated by "village life". You can create a couple of loops within the country and get a sense of the culture. The coast tends to be flat or rolling and the interior tends to be more hilly. There are two routes from Liberia to Sierra Leone; The one near Robertsport, on the coast takes you to Joru and then Kenema. The one in the interior near Foya takes you northwest to Kenema and passes through a region known for its agriculture, crafts and beauty, . There are a number of routes to Guinea. The main routes to Ivory Coast are near Sanniquellie, passing to Bo and near Harper, on the southeast coast. As peace returns to Liberia we will update this page. Links of Interest:

Teacher's Guide - Liberia, January 2001 Teacher's Guide prepared by Jo Sullivan, Salem Public Schools.
Prior Knowledge:
American students may have almost no knowledge of Liberia (Is it where Quadaffi lives?) and frequently have much misinformation about Africa. It is very important to establish what the images and stereotypes of African peoples and cultures are before embarking on new information. Ask students what they already know about Liberia. Whether or not they are able to list any information, then move to asking them, "What do you think of when you think about Africa?" If students are adolescents, or aware that they are not supposed to have stereotypes about Africa, it may be helpful to ask instead, "What do you think most American students think about when they think of Africa?" Through the lessons related to this issue, refer back to students' prior knowledge and expectations, to make connections and to adjust and discuss images and knowledge gained. Background and Context:
It is important to balance African American settler aspirations and experience with the reality of the economy, society, and politics of the African coast - real people already lived on the coast. Liberia's origins and history meant that segments of Liberian society lived in uneasy coexistence, sometimes oppression, and then outright conflict. Read aloud or with students the articles on pages 3 - 5 and 7 - 10 as a general introduction to the history of the region and the origins of Liberia as a modern nation. Understanding the history of Liberia leads to understanding the later history of Liberia's failure to bring about the hopes of its founders.

Director-General of UNESCO pays an official visit to Liberia
29-11-2004 - On the invitation of the President of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, Charles Gydue Bryant, Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, paid an official visit to Liberia from 26 to 27 November 2004.
Mr Matsuura also held talks with Mr Wesley M. Johnson, Vice-President of the National Transitional Government, as well as with the President of the National Assembly, who welcomed the setting up of the African Forum of Parliamentarians for Education (FAPED), a valuable mechanism that will allow parliamentarians to gain a better insight into the education issues that are arising on the continental scale. During a reception given in his honour by the Government, Mr Matsuura was raised to the rank of High Chief with the name of Vany the 1st.
The Director-General also met, during a working lunch chaired by Mrs Evelyn S. Kandakai and in the presence of the First Lady, the different members of Government responsible for education, culture and communication. The Liberian authorities underscored the importance of cooperation between UNESCO and Liberia, in particular in the field of education, as well as in promoting the value of their cultural heritage.

pictures taken during trip follow the text of the letter) Dear friends who care about Liberia: We returned in late November from a short trip to Liberia, and thought it might interest you to read something of what we did and thought during our time there. We arrived in Liberia on 6 November and left on 22 November. We went together to Cuttington University College for a few days, before Judy went back to Monrovia to work with the Episcopal Church. John stayed at Cuttington for ten days and then joined Judy in Monrovia for the remainder of the trip. We give a brief statement of
what each of us saw and did, and then we reflect on the situation as we understand it. John's activities:
John worked with the rural development faculty and students, and also visited a number of rural villages to assess their post-civil war condition. Cuttington has now introduced a rural development major which has been chosen by about 20 of the 500 undergraduates. The largest single group of
students in the college is in nursing, which is of course also committed to rural development. Students in the education department equally must face difficult teaching conditions, whether in the rural or the urban area. Maxwell Poe, a former student of ours who is now teaching at Cuttington,
pointed out that the "anxiety", as he calls it, of people in the city is as severe or more severe than that of rural people, since many of the urban schools are in poor condition.

He told the students to take seriously the choice that they will make in October by electing a matured and committed leadership that will be keen and focused on good governance, as well as place the public interest first and last. "When I talk about leadership, I'm not only talking about the presidency as everybody wants to be president. Most of the time people tend to forget about the first branch of government, which is the Legislative Branch. If that Branch is strong, matured and composed of good and qualified people, we can help the president to promote good governance," Mr. Urey stressed.

An invitation to discuss deconstruction of Liberia's political superstructure
Compatriots: Liberians, like you, who have our country at heart, have agreed to meet and discuss how Liberia's standard political culture could be effectively transmuted before the much-talked-about 2005 general and presidential elections. This could be a precursor to a larger All-Liberian Conference being proposed by ULAA and the Movement for Political Reform in Liberia. I view the proposed meeting as an opportunity to discuss, in depth, the need to deconstruct collectively our country's political culture of patronage and have same replaced with a system capable of producing a truly democratic Liberia,
where all are equal. If the existing culture persists, it would not matter who becomes president; corruption will continue to thrive; hence, revolutionary violence. We must set the stage to help change the culture that was imposed on us by others. Once that's altered then and only then could we seek a new leader committed to adopting a more critical and revolutionary posture that will engage Liberians in a rational process of transforming our country into a sensitive nation dedicated to the well-being of all Liberians. Clearly, Liberia craves and demands a leader who perceives the unseen potential of other Liberians; a leader who is willing and able to provide a truly democratic opportunity for all Liberians; a leader who has the courage to focus on ideas and issues, not demagoguery, sectarianism, ethnicity and personality. Yes, our country deserves a leader who has the capacity to discuss issues so as to chart a striking evolution of contemporary ideas, moving toward a political analysis of multiethnic democracy and social justice.
