Tribes of Liberia
  • Background
Many consider the Gola to be earliest tribe to inhabit Liberia, but the Gola themselves claim they met the Dei ethnic group there when they arrived. The Dei ethnic group are a vanguard group of Bassa that settled Liberia in waves. The ethnic groups of Liberia can be divided into five major groups:
  • Mel (Gola, Kissi) Kwa (Dei, Bassa, Kru, Krahn, Grebo) Mande-Fu (Kpelle, Gio, Mano, Loma) Mande-Tan (Vai, Mende, Mandingo) Repatriated (Americo-Liberians, Congo, Caribbean)

The history of most of these ethnic groups spans over thousands of years.
The Dei would settle first and would later be joined by the Gola ethinc group before any of the other Bassa groups arrived. The Gola ethnic group originated somewhere in Central-Africa. During the Empire of Ancient Ghana they were heavily involved in the land-surveying and judicial aspects of the empire. The other ethnic groups that fall under the Mande-Tan, Mande-Fu were also members of Ancient Ghana. Because of the their influence in the judicial aspects of the Ghana, the Gola's social structure dominated through the Poro. With the influx of Islam many groups adopted while others resisted. The Golas fought three wars with pro-Islamic elements in a changing Ghana. These wars were known as the Kumba wars. The Golas lost the third of these wars and were forced to retreat toward, Sierra Leone. They were pursued by the Mende, Gbandi and Loma. Their battles with the Mende in Sierra Leone forced them to retreat yet again and settle finally in Liberia where they encountered the Dei.

COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Liberia is a developing West African country which is recovering from seven years of devastating civil war (1989-97). Although a democratically elected government was installed in August 1997, limited progress has been made toward the following goals: resettlement of refugees and displaced persons, reintegration of former combatants, reconstruction of the country?s infrastructure, respect for human rights and the rule of law, a stable environment for economic development, and the elimination of corruption. Tourism facilities are poor or, in many cases, nonexistent.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required, as is evidence of a yellow fever vaccination. For persons who are traveling from countries that do not have a Liberian embassy or consulate, an airport entry visa may be obtained, but the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization must authorize the visa in advance of arrival. Further information on entry requirements for Liberia can be obtained from the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia, 5201 16th street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011. The telephone numbers are (202) 723-0437 to 723-0440. Overseas inquiries should be made to the nearest Liberian embassy or consulate.

Welcome! The University of Liberia (UL) is one of West Africa's oldest institutions of higher learning. It was damaged by Liberia's 1989-1997 civil war. Recent fighting in Monrovia reversed gains made in reconstructing the university. Reports say the University's facilities were badly looted. UL authorities are now undertaking a damage assessment, and making plans to reopen the university.

    Liberia
Liberia, its name derived from the Latin liber, meaning "free," was founded by freed American slaves in the early nineteenth century. The most important city is Monrovia and was named in honor of President Monroe, who held office at the time the Republic was officially established. Red, white, and blue mailboxes, American currency, and the widespread use of English bespeak the American influence, and it is not unlike visiting part of our own country in the summertime. Liberia is a delightful country. The waterfront market of Monrovia teems with activity, particularly in the early morning hours. Here one sees both American and African influences in the dress of the Liberians. Women may effect Western dress or wear long cotton skirts in startling colors, with bandannas loosely wrapped around their heads. Smiling and friendly, they made us feel most welcome. Cassava, addoes, tiny hot red peppers. sweet potatoes, yams, and green bananas dominate the market, but there are also collard greens, cabbage, eggplant, okra, coconut, and fresh ginger. The staple food is rice, which is eaten twice a day in most households.

    Introduction
Located on the west coast of Africa, Liberia is bordered by Guinea in the north, Ivory Coast to the east, Sierra Leone on the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southwest.
There are three distinct geographical belts lying parallel to the coast. The low coastal belt is about 50 miles wide, with tidal creeks, shallow lagoons and mangrove marshes. The land then rises abruptly, forming a great belt of high forest with elevations of 600 to 1,000 feet. Inland is a plateau 1,500 to 2,000 feet above sea level, where the forest is dense. The Nimba Mountains, near the Guinea border, rise to 4,200 feet, and the Waulo Mountains to 4,500 feet. Of the six principal rivers, all of which are at right angles to the coast, and flow into the Atlantic Ocean, only the Cavally, which separates Liberia from the Ivory Coast, is navigable for more than a few miles. Sandbars obstruct the mouths of all rivers, making entrance hazardous.

Eight years of civil strife were brought to a close in 1997 when free and open presidential and legislative elections were held. President TAYLOR now holds strong executive power with no real political opposition. Years of fighting, coupled with the flight of most businesses, have disrupted formal economic activity. A still unsettled domestic security situation has slowed the process of rebuilding the social and economic structure of this war-torn country. In 2001, the UN imposed sanctions on Liberian diamonds, along with an arms embargo and a travel ban on government officials, for Liberia's support of the rebel insurgency in Sierra Leone. Renewed rebel activity has further eroded stability and economic activity. A regional peace initiative commenced in the spring of 2003 but was disrupted by the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) indictment of President TAYLOR on war crimes charges.
