Dutch Liberals scared of Queen
Officially the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy. Many years of state and media propaganda have lead many Dutch people to believe that the Queen has no political power. But the last decades Queen Beatrix has steadily worked to enlarge her political powers. In a recent speech at the university of Leiden she praised the politicians that she that the last decades they have given her much more freedom.
There have been many incidents. Not a long a go it became public that the royal family gave direct orders to the intelligence service, without the responsible minister even knowing about it. Not generally know but a long time practice is that the Queen even has her own shadow cabinet and every Monday prime Minister Balkenende goes to her “working” palace to speak through the current affairs of the country. She also can order any minister to her palace to let him or her explain his or her actions. There is much more to tell, but I think this shows that she is certainly not only ceremonially figure. Queen Beatrix and her son Willem Alexander the heir to the thrown, have already said several times that they are not interested in a pure ceremonial role.

Nomination of Candidate C. Fundraising D. Policy development E. Organization of Leadership and other Conventions assume certain perqs. Thus is created a spillover effect where lines between government and party get blurred. Most often we know this as patronage Quebec , election or referendum is seen as WAR and that justifies almost any excess. For many years two main Ontario ad agencies shared much of the Ottawa work for Tourism Canada , Trade Canada and other Ottawa In Quebec Quebec , the easiest appeal is to economic self-interest in Quebec . This appeal with its parallel party political self interest approach is extremely fluid and must be constantly renewed by federal dollars for special provincial programs, by contracts or direct financial assistance for certain companies, by individual or corporate patronage. All this must be accompanied by the appropriate propaganda (advertising et al) extolling the benefits of the federal connection. This we have come to know as buying Quebec This has gone on and has worked for over 150 years in various ways and by various govts and parties. We note that Mulroney Tories as well as a long list of Liberal leaders have done this.

An overview of the proportional representation system used to choose members of the unicameral Danish legislature, the Folketing, is presented here. In addition, national-, regional- and district-level results are available here for the following Folketing elections: February 8, 2005 November 20, 2001 March 11, 1998 September 21, 1994 ... December 12, 1990 The election statistics presented in this space come from official reports issued by the Danish Ministry of the Interior General Aspects of the Electoral System The Parliament of the Kingdom of Denmark consists of a single chamber, the Folketing, composed of 179 members directly elected by universal adult suffrage for a maximum term of four years. A total of 175 members are chosen in metropolitan Denmark, while the Faroe Islands and Greenland elect two members each. Folketing seats from metropolitan Denmark are apportioned on a nationwide basis among political parties, according to the largest remainder method of PR. However, in order to participate in the proportional allocation of seats at the national level, a party must obtain at least one district seat, or a number of votes equal to the ratio of valid votes to district seats in at least two of the three electoral regions, or at least two percent of all valid votes cast.

THE ISSUE When we vote, key decisions have already been made for us. Parties choose candidates and policies. In general, only those who feel comfortable within a party’s machinery participate in that process. How parties are funded influences that party machinery. Federally, recent reforms to the way parties are financed haven’t solved all our problems, but they’ve gone a long way to cement the differences between our electoral system and the U.S. system. Provincially, we haven’t tackled the issue head on, except through the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform, whose proposed STV electoral system seems doomed to fail in the coming election. Of course, it’s complicated Federal party membership roles are still subject to absurd manipulation. And not every voter, even those deeply interested in public policy, has the time or interest to participate in party affairs.

In the 1880s working-class political representatives stood in parliamentary elections as Liberal-Labour candidates. After the 1885 General Election there were eleven of these Liberal-Labour MPs. Some socialists like Keir Hardie , the Liberal-Labour MP for West Ham, began to argue that the working class needed their own independent political party. This feeling was strong in Manchester and in 1892 Robert Blatchford , the editor of the socialist newspaper, the Clarion joined with Tom Garrs , and Richard Pankhurst to form the Manchester Independent Labour Party.
The activities of the Manchester group inspired Liberal-Labour MPs to consider establishing a new national working class party. Under the leadership of Keir Hardie , the Independent Labour Party was formed in 1893. It was decided that the main objective of the party would be "to secure the collective ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange". Leading figures in this new organisation included Hardie

Official Liberal Party position on culture and broadcasting. Click here for PDF version (100 KB) Thank you for your letter of June 11, 2004, requesting information on the Liberal cultural and broadcasting policy. The Liberal government has developed a strong broadcasting system that meets the cultural objectives of Canadians. We will continue to build a strong and vibrant system that reflects the lives and the values of Canadians from all parts of this country. An example of the Liberal government’s commitment to a strong broadcasting sector was the establishment of the Canada Television Fund – a private-public partnership whose goal is to assist the creation and broadcast of high-quality culturally significant Canadian television programs in English, French and Aboriginal Languages from all regions of the country. The last budget restored funding of the CTF to $100 million over the next two years honouring a personal commitment that the Prime Minister made in April 2003. The Liberal government understands that cultural institutions begin production of their programs and films several years in advance. We support the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage to provide these institutions with stable multi-year funding. For example, Budget 1997 guaranteed stable funding to the CBC for 5 years. Since that promise, funding for the CBC has steadily risen from $806.4 million in 1997-98 to $1.0465 billion in 2002-03.

2004 Canadian Election
Article by Harold D. Clarke, University of Texas at Dallas This was a remarkable turn of events. In late 2003 everything seemed in place for another Liberal victory. The economy was in reasonably good shape, and the new Liberal leader, Paul Martin, enjoyed widespread popularity. In contrast, the opposition appeared weak and divided. Decade-long efforts to "unite the right" after the PCs' disastrous showing in 1993 had finally led to the formation of the new Conservative Party of Canada. However, many observers believed the new party and its leader, Stephen Harper, were too ideologically extreme to appeal to voters outside of the party's base in western Canada. In Quebec, the fires of separatism appeared to have been doused. If so, the BQ would be lucky to hold the 38 seats it held-the Liberals would take the rest. And, the Liberals would do fairly or, perhaps, very well in Atlantic Canada. Doing the math, Liberal strategists were very comfortable. Then, two things happened. First was the "sponsorship scandal." On February 10th, 2004, the Auditor General reported that over $100 million in federal funds had been "misspent" as part of an initiative to advertise the many good things the federal government was doing for Quebeckers. In acts of blatant corruption, some prominent federal Liberals in Quebec had apparently simply pocketed the money. When the scandal broke, Liberal support in the province quickly eroded, and disaffected voters flooded to the BQ. The scandal also affected Liberal fortunes elsewhere, with polls showing that many Canadians found it incredible that Paul Martin, formerly a senior cabinet minister from Quebec, was not involved in the scandal.

The editor said the paper stands by its story "150%" and would go to court over it if they had to. He said that they have 2 different sources for the story, and that the sources had been informing the National Enquirer about this story for about the last month or so.
Notably, the editor said that a "highly respected" newspaper has also been working on the story and could well publish something on it in the next week or two.

[Liberal Times] Liberal Confusion
By Ronald Meinardus Following my recent column, in which I discussed the basics of liberalism, I received an E-Mail from a reader who wrote: ¡°Since, as you state, liberalism seems to have the solutions to all of our problems, why then are liberal political parties not the dominant forces in their respective countries?¡± This is a reasonable question if one looks at the democracies of this world: social-democratic, conservative and other political forces clearly have the lead over distinctly liberal governments. In Europe, where programmatic political parties have long been an integral part of political culture, and also in the Americas and parts of Africa and Asia, there are only a few countries governed by manifestly liberal parties. Let me begin my argument regarding what I would term the limitations of organized political liberalism with some basic linguistic observations: Not all languages provide the term ¡°liberal¡±, which originates from the Latin ¡° liber ¡± meaning ¡°free¡±. The Greeks created their own word for liberal: In that classical language ¡°
