Home Information Resources Facts and Figures - Political Parties of New South Wales (Overview) By David Clune For the first thirty years of responsible government in New South Wales from 1856 onwards, recognisable political parties did not exist. In the Legislative Assembly, proponents of colonial liberalism quickly became predominant and soon achieved much of their agenda such as the secret ballot and universal manhood suffrage (1858). In the nominated Legislative Council, by contrast, conservative interests were very much in control. The prevailing orthodoxy among Assembly Members quickly established itself as liberalism, free trade and the independence of the Member of Parliament to vote as he thought best for the colony. When the conservative/liberal division faded ideological differences between Members became insignificant. The groupings that did exist were factions around prominent leaders such as Sir Charles Cowper, Sir James Martin and, in particular, Sir John Robertson and Sir Henry Parkes. Parkes was Premier five times between 1872 and 1891. From the late 1880s onwards, political parties did emerge divided over the fiscal question: free trade vs. protection. Both parties contained radical and conservative wings and accommodated a variety of interests and opinions (although Catholics and country people tended largely to vote Protectionist). The first Free Trade leader was Sir Henry Parkes followed by Sir George Reid. Sir George Dibbs became the leader of the Protectionists followed briefly by Sir Edmund Barton and then Sir William Lyne.

Shinui History Shinui (Hebrew for "Change") was formed in 1974, a few months after the Yom Kippur (October) War , as one of the protest movements. Its original name was "Shinui - The political and social revival movement." As it was formed, Shinui decided to run for the Knesset In 1976, the late professor Yigael Yadin , who was IDF's second chief of staff, formed a political party which was destined to run for the Knesset - "The Democratic Movement." Shinui and The Democratic Movement began negotiation to form a united party, and indeed in the beginning of 1977 it was born as "Dash - The Democratic Movement For Change." Political Parties and Electoral Systems in Lebanon and Israel: Interactive Reinforcement Hassan Krayem American University of Beirut The comparisons between Israel's and Lebanon's political party systems are interesting for various reasons. First of all, both systems are similar in that they are considered multiparty systems. This initial observation is, however, misleading because the two systems are genuinely different. In Israel, political parties have dominated the political process, and the smaller parties have had significant roles, including representation of various ethnic as well as national political views. In Lebanon, the role of political parties has been weak, specifically in the tendency for traditional and neotraditional forces to be emphasized while the role of political parties is being undermined by these forces. In Israel, the strong role of political parties was and is being reinforced by an electoral system which is based on proportional representation and one national electoral district, thus allowing for different parties, no matter how small they might be, to get some representation. The largest is the Social Democrats, which is also the party that has played the most prominent role in Swedish politics in the past one hundred years. The other parties are the Moderates (formerly Conservatives), Liberals, Christian Democrats, Center Party (formerly Agrarians), Left Party (formerly Communists) and Green Party. The parties have traditionally been grouped into a rightist (non-socialist) and leftist (socialist) bloc. Toward the end of the 20thcentury, however, partially new dividing lines also began to play a major role, especially environmental issues and European economic and political integration. Today the parties face new challenges, among them a growing problem in recruiting new members, as well as a general distrust of established political institutions. The origins of the parties Somewhat later, two new parties emerged. On the one hand, the Communist Party was established in 1917 by the social democratic youth movement and party intellectuals who disliked the political pragmatism that characterized their party's stance on ideological principles. On the other hand, farmers' representatives began to break away from other parties, because they found it increasingly difficult to make themselves heard, for example, in the conservative camp. Legally and politically, this choice is not made by the Canadian public at large, but rather by a private club known as the Liberal Party of Canada. It was part of a deal with the independents who held the balance of power during the Greiner and Fahey governments. But the legislation contained a section that completely changed the way state politics is funded in NSW. The legislation was put on the table one week, and brought on for debate at 1.50 one morning of the next. After three speakers it passed the Legislative Assembly by 2.03am. The changes established what is called a "political education fund" in NSW. But the money didn't go to schools to educate children about democracy or the electoral system. It didn't go to the parliamentary library, it didn't go to the electoral commissioner, and it certainly didn't go to the various schools of government in the various universities around Sydney. Instead, the money went to the political parties. In a single stroke, public funding of political parties was doubled. Basically, the legislation gives parties the cost of a stamp for every vote they received in the previous lower house election. And they get it every year for the four years between elections.
