Cockfield, Brown: the original 'Liberal friendly' ad agency
The focus of the Gomery inquiry has now shifted to those "Liberal-friendly" ad agencies that appear to have gobbled up super-sized commissions in exchange for very little work. But Groupaction, Lafleur Communication Marketing and Groupe Everest are just the latest in a string of Montreal agencies with close Liberal ties.
The first is a company that disappeared more than 20 years ago, and that few people today have ever heard of. But the Montreal firm of Cockfield, Brown was a pioneer among Canadian ad agencies in politics. It was the first "Liberal-friendly" agency in Canada. And in its heyday, the connections between the company and the party were closer than anything Alfonso Gagliano and Jean Brault of Groupaction could have ever imagined.
Formed in 1928 out of the merger of a Toronto ad agency and a Montreal firm, Cockfield, Brown was the first Canadian agency to establish its own research department, staffed with psychologists and other people from the newly emerging social sciences.

Political Parties and Elections

The election campaign is a time-honored American tradition. Major national, state and even local elections are elaborate, with multi-million dollar advertising budgets, televised debates, rallies, political conventions, and campaign posters. Any American 18 years and over can vote in an election. Two-Party System. The United States has had two major political parties since the 1860's: the Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans are referred to sometimes as the G.O.P. (Grand Old Party); their symbols is an elephant. The Democrats' symbol is a donkey. The ideological differences between these two political parties are often not apparent to outsiders. Very loosely speaking, the Republicans support big business and lower taxes while the Democrats call for government spending on social programs. Left and Right.

Mustafa Bakri Dismissed by political analysts as a party with contradictory policies and no coherent ideology, the Liberal Party, led by Mustafa Kamel Murad, came into existence in 1976 on the authority of a decree from then President Anwar El-Sadat. With little, if any, grassroots support, Sadat envisaged the party as what could best be described as a loyalist opposition group. Murad did not disappoint Sadat. Supporting his peace overtures to Israel, Murad accompanied Sadat on his 1977 trip to Jerusalem. He also backed his economic open door policy. The Liberals first appeared on the political scene in 1975 as the "right wing" or forum of the Arab Socialist Union (ASU), then the nation' sole political party. When Sadat ordered the dissolution of the ASU and a switch to the multi-party system the following year, the Liberals became a fully-fledged political party along with the two other wings of the ASU, the leftist Tagammu and the Arab Socialist Misr Party. The Liberals managed to win 23 parliamentary seats in the first multi-party elections held in the same year, earning Murad the title of opposition leader. But in 1978, the party relinquished its opposition role and forged a coalition with the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP). As a result, its presence in parliament was reduced to three seats in the 1979 elections. The coalition had to be dissolved.

GERMAN PAPERS
Finally, an Honest Political Party in Germany
After years of talking about reform, Germany's political parties are now falling all over themselves to tell German voters that things aren't that bad. Except for the liberals. The party's platform is full of blunt realities. Plus, does the Sharm el-Sheik attack leave room for optimism?

DDP Guido Westerwelle announced the liberal's campaign platform on Monday. It's not everyday that the smallest party in Germany's parliament is worthy of headlines. After all, the Free Democrats (FDP), Germany's liberal party, is more known for its rather odd personalities and amateurish blunders than serious politics. But with the rise of a new left-wing party in the country, and the concurrent shift to the left complete with a new unwillingness to talk about the difficult reforms necessary to revive Germany's stagnant economy, the FDP's presentation of its campaign platform on Monday is cause for attention. Plus, the party may play a key role in this autumn's general elections. After all, the party's miserable showing in the last election was one of the main reasons why Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats (SPD) were re-elected.

There are at present (June 1999) 21 political parties registered in Norway. Eight of these are represented in the Storting. By Steinar Dalbakk The common factor linking the parties that count in the current political scene is that they are all cast from a traditional West European model based on the democratic principle that political bodies shall govern by guidelines established by or pursuant to law. Elected bodies at the central level (the Storting) and within regional and local units of government (counties and municipalities) are selected through free, direct and secret elections. Norway has no right-wing radical grouping with fascist overtones and the two existing communist parties have no real political influence today. The largest party, the Norwegian Labour Party, is social democratic in the Nordic manner. This means that the party has been a staunch advocate of the welfare state and champions social rights for all with respect to education, old age pensions and other social benefits. At the same time the party has been a strong advocate of NATO, and has espoused Norwegian membership of the European Union on several occasions. The Progress Party is generally regarded as standing to the right of the Conservatives, with a liberalistic platform firmly opposed to state control and taxation. This is the party that goes the furthest in opposing government involvement.

Activist - A person who is active in supporting and fighting for a particular issue. Although they may be instrumental in the success of a policy idea, they also have the potential to become very annoying, very fast. Agenda - The list of policy proposals (and personal vendettas) a candidate hopes to accomplish if elected. Ballot - The list of candidate's names on which you make your selection and vote. By making your selection and "casting a ballot," you have exercised your civic duty and voted. Different states use various forms of ballots, from high tech electronic ballots where you select on a touch screen computer to punch card ballots where you poke a hole to pick your favorite candidate. Big government - When William Howard Taft, tipping the scales at over 300 pounds, was elected president, it gave the term a whole new meaning. However, it is generally known to describe the "ever expanding" nature of the federal government's budget, policy proposals, and intrusion into everyday life. Conservatives generally criticize liberals for wanting obtrusive big government. Bipartisan - The dream of political idealists who believe that Democrats and Republicans can work together. The term bipartisan indicates that both parties support a policy and are working together towards its successful implementation. Most candidates promise that they will work in a bipartisan manner. Most candidates lie.

By Donald Lambro
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
The Democrats' postelection war about what they should stand for is heating up again, with centrists challenging liberals to "real fights" within the party about staking out a tougher position against terrorism.
In an attack on the party's dominant left wing, anti-war base, and a warning for new Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean "to do no harm," the centrist-leaning Democratic Leadership Council said it is "a delusion to think that if we just turned out our voters, we could win national elections."
Instead, the DLC called on the party to dramatically change its message to "recapture the muscular progressive internationalism of Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy and convince voters that national security is our first priority."
"To win back the White House in 2008, our party must change. We must be willing to discard political strategies that may make us feel good but that keep falling short. We must finally reject the false choice between exciting our base and expanding our appeal, because unless we both motivate and persuade, we'll lose every time," said DLC founder Al From and President Bruce Reed in a new manifesto for their party.
