Welcome to the Lewis and Clark Expedition Bicentennial! Geographically, the first and last segments of their westward voyage were more about confirmation than discovery. In 1796, the trader Jean Baptiste Truteau reported, he had been told by an Indian that the Missouri River originated in "great mountains of rock," beyond which another "wide and deep river" flowed "in the direction of the winter sunset"to "a large body of water, the other bank of which was not visible." by Evelyn Boswell BOZEMAN York’s existence at other times was marred by beatings and a master who refused to let the slave live with his wife. York knew from childhood what it was like to be the personal property of another. Clark referred to him as "My boy" even when York was in his 30s. "The best and the worst of a slave’s life constituted York’s personal world," Philip Morgan told a packed hall during his lecture on "York’s World: Slavery and the Lewis and Clark Expedition." Morgan is a professor at the College of William and Mary, editor of the William and Mary Quarterly and an expert in early American slavery. He was the first speaker in a series of free lectures on "The World of Lewis and Clark: Montana, the West and America in the Late 18th and Early 19th Century." The other lectures will be given at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 and March 4 at the Museum of the Rockies. York was born in Caroline County in the early 1770s. He lived near the York River, and his early life was probably typical of the other 200,000 slaves in Virginia at the time, Morgan said. That would have meant that he, as a child, ran "essentially naked and barefoot most of the year." His diet would have been high in starch and low in protein. He undoubtedly lived in a drafty, dark cabin surrounded by a dirt yard.

The marks begin at Thomas Jefferson's home in Monticello Virginia, continue westward to Lewis and Clark's winter home on the Pacific Ocean, Fort Clatsop in Oregon, and then loop back eastward ending under the Arch of St. Louis. NGS is positioning these markers using the satellite-based Global Positioning System. These markers will be incorporated into the National Spatial Reference System NSRS, the federal standard and foundation for all positioning and navigation activities in the United States. (

  • 3 Rivers Canoes is located in historic Loma Montana. Loma is located near the site described as "Decision Point" , the spot where the Marias & the Missouri Rivers join. The Journals of Lewis & Clark explained it as " the most significant geographical question of the entire expedition. Which of these rivers was the Missouri? " We have begun a major remodeling project of our facilities. The buildings contain the 3 Rivers Canoes office and the Ace High Casino . The portion containing the Casino has been significantly improved over this past winter and we will continue to upgrade the remaining structure in the near future. fter Congress approved Jefferson's plan to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory in February of 1803, he appointed his secretary Meriwether Lewis to lead the new exploring party, known as the "Corps of Discovery." In a journey begun with commercial and political ambitions, as well as scientific discovery, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark became the first Americans to chart the vastness of the West, see the Rocky Mountains and reach the Pacific by land. In the careful journals that they were duty-bound to keep during the journey, they not only conveyed a sense of awe, they explained critical decisions such as how they chose members of the expedition, negotiated forks in the path and picked a winter camp.
