The Topic:
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Easier - The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806) sought an overland route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Harder - In February 1803 at the urging of then President Thomas Jefferson, Congress approved spending $2,500 (Final cost was $38,727) for a small U.S. Army expedition. Their assignment was to ascend the Missouri River to its source, cross the continental divide, and follow the Columbia River to its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson chose 28-year-old Meriwether Lewis as leader for the group he called the Corps of Discovery. Lewis selected a former army comrade, 32-year-old William Clark to be his co-leader. The expedition began May 14, 1804, as the group left Camp Wood River (Illinois). The expedition returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806. Lewis and Clark http://www.edgate.com/lewisandclark/

Part 1: Friends Get Ready to Go Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were the leaders of an expedition to explore the vast unknown territory west of the Mississippi River. They were friends who also happened to know President Thomas Jefferson . (Lewis was, in fact, Jefferson's private secretary at the time.) Their job was to learn as much as they could about the new territory. They kept detailed notes in journals, and they brought and sent back examples of hundreds of new species of animals and plants.

LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION
Early in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, both experienced soldiers, to explore what is now the northwestern United States. He requested detailed observations about natural resources and transcontinental routes, also instructing the leaders to contact Indian tribes. The Louisiana Purchase soon gave the expedition new urgency; almost nothing was known about the vast addition of land west of the Mississippi River. In May 1804, Lewis and Clark's party of nearly fifty men set out from St. Louis. They headed up the Missouri River and at the onset of winter reached the site of present-day Bismarck, North Dakota, where they constructed a fort. At this time Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, joined the expedition as a guide and translator. In 1805, the group followed the Missouri westward to its headwaters and then crossed the Rocky Mountains and proceeded along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia rivers to the Pacific Ocean. On their return in 1806, Clark and Lewis separated and found two more passes over the Rockies. Once reunited, they continued down the Missouri to St. Louis, arriving with abundant painstaking notes and drawings of the geography of the region and the wildlife and inhabitants they had encountered. Lewis and Clark: American Explorers

Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838) set out in May 1804 to explore and map the American West. Lewis and Clark were accompanied by a crew of men, and later, the Shoshone Indian guide and interpreter Sacajawea (also spelled Sacagawea) and her infant son. Lewis and Clark travelled by river and by land from St. Louis, Missouri , to the Oregon coast (Fort Clatsop), and back again.
President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Lewis to head an expedition to explore the newly-bought Louisiana Territory in order to further commerce (trade). Jefferson also wanted information on the plant and animal life of the American West. This was the first official expedition to cross the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis chose Clark as the co-leader of the expedition; the two men had been friends since childhood. Lewis left Philadelphia
