Frederick R. Appelbaum Jacob M. Rowe Jerald Radich and John E. Dick Abstract Through the hard work of a large number of investigators, the biology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is becoming increasingly well understood, and as a consequence, new therapeutic targets have been identified and new model systems have been developed for testing novel therapies. How these new therapies can be most effectively studied in the clinic and whether they will ultimately improve cure rates are questions of enormous importance. In this article, Dr. Jacob Rowe presents a summary of the current state-of-the-art therapy for adult AML. His contribution emphasizes

FALLON, Nevada (AP) For three years, scientists prodded the dust, dirt and water in this rural community and tested the blood of dozens of its residents all in hopes of uncovering why children were developing leukemia. Yet despite the work, scientists revealed Monday that they haven't been able to determine what caused the disease that has sickened 16 children and killed three since 1997. "We were hoping we'd get more information here," said Dr. Malcolm Smith of the National Cancer Institute. "The studies didn't do that but they certainly told us a great deal about what does not exist as health threats to the community." The scientists' final report, presented at a meeting attended by more than 100 people, was a disappointment for families of children afflicted by the cancer. But researchers said the massive amount of data they compiled should help in future efforts to determine the source of the disease.

Massachusetts Rep. Moakley dies of leukemia
BETHESDA, Maryland (CNN) Rep. John Joseph Moakley, 74, a good-humored Capitol Hill fixture for the last 29 years, died Monday of complications from leukemia. "It is my sad duty to notify you that our dear friend Joe Moakley passed away today, Memorial Day, at 3:30 p.m.," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Massachusetts, a former Moakley staffer, Monday at Bethesda Naval Hospital. "At his bedside were members of his family and his brothers Bob and Tom, staff and friends. "We all loved Joe very, very much," McGovern said. "We all admired the courage and even the humor he displayed over these last few weeks." Moakley, known to his friends and adversaries as "Joe," was a Massachusetts Democrat who represented the congressional district encompassing the rough-and-tumble South Boston section of Boston. He surprised many of his fellow House members earlier this year by announcing he was ill with leukemia, and planned to retire at the end of his term in 2002. Moakley was admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital last week and his condition was said to have deteriorated rapidly. Family members and friends, including several lawmakers, held a long vigil at his bedside over the weekend.

To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, leukemia is a malignant disease (cancer) that originates in a cell in the marrow. It is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of developing marrow cells. There are two major classifications of leukemia: myelogenous or lymphocytic, which can each be acute or chronic. The terms myelogenous or lymphocytic denote the cell type involved. Thus, four major types of leukemia are: acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia and acute or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Acute leukemia is a rapidly progressing disease that results in the accumulation of immature, functionless cells in the marrow and blood. The marrow often can no longer produce enough normal red and white blood cells and platelets. Anemia, a deficiency of red cells, develops in virtually all leukemia patients. The lack of normal white cells impairs the body's ability to fight infections. A shortage of platelets results in bruising and easy bleeding. Chronic leukemia progresses more slowly and permits greater numbers of more mature, functional cells to be made. In the United States, about 2,000 children and 27,000 adults are diagnosed each year with leukemia. The incidence of leukemia is more common in men and boys than girls and women, and also more likely to occur in white people than black Exposure to high-energy radiation (such as World War II atomic bomb explosions) and intense exposure to low-energy radiation from electromagnetic fields (such as power lines and electric appliances like electric blankets) have been linked to leukemia. Studies are being conducted to further understand this link.

Curing cancer one step at a time through charitable donations...
I hope this introduction finds you well and happy. I've created this site, www.life-celebrations.org , to ask for your support in helping me meet an important personal challenge. This year, I turn 50 (yes, that's a REALLY BIG number) and wanted to do something memorable to mark the occasion. Some people get tattoos, some get motorcycles, some jump out of airplanes...I decided to do something a little more altruistic by making a commitment to walk a 26.2 mile marathon ! This marathon is just one of more than 35 marathons across the country that sanction organizations to participate. The group I'm training with is the Team in Training , and the organization we support is the . Team in Training (TNT) is the #1 training program in the country today. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has made significant progress in the treatment of leukemia and is committed to finding a cure in our lifetime. The Society has been rated by "Money Magazine" as one of the top ten charities for having the highest percentage of funds raised to directly benefit research and family services. My personal goal is to raise over $5000 through this marathon.

Disease Background
Descriptions of the Diseases Leukemia describes a group of cancers of the blood that are categorized by how quickly the disease develops and worsens, and by the type of blood cell affected. Fast-growing leukemias are called acute and slow-growing leukemias are called chronic. In acute leukemia, abnormal blood cells, called blasts, remain immature and cannot carry out their normal functions. The number of blasts rapidly increases, and the disease quickly worsens. In chronic leukemia, some blast cells are present, but in general, these cells are more mature and can carry out some of their normal functions. Also, the number of blasts increases more slowly than in acute leukemia. As a result, chronic leukemia more gradually gets worse. The four most common types of leukemia include:
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of leukemia in young children. This disease also affects adults, especially those ages 65 and older.

Drug offers hope in battle against leukemia, other cancers
October 26, 1999 Web posted at: 12:15 a.m. EDT (0415 GMT) LOS ANGELES (CNN) An experimental drug designed to combat chronic myelogenous leukemia, a common form of the adult cancer, has produced dramatic results in early clinical trials, according to a preliminary report released Monday. Unlike traditional, toxic chemotherapy remedies, which kill both cancerous and healthy cells, the drug STI-571 specifically targets an enzyme found only in leukemia cells, meaning patients suffer minimal side effects. Some experts think the new approach could work for other cancers as well. "This is a real home run," said principal researcher Dr. Charles Sawyers of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California in Los Angeles. "Six or eight months ago, I would never have believed this."
