Chronic leukemia is a type of cancer that starts in blood-forming cells of the bone marrow , and then can spread to other parts of the body including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, skin, and brain. Other types of cancer can start in organs such as the lungs, colon, or breast, and then spread to the bone marrow. These cancers that start elsewhere and then spread to the bone marrow are not leukemia. Bone Marrow and Lymphoid Tissue Bone marrow is the soft inner part of some bones such as the skull, shoulder blade, ribs, pelvis, and backbones. The bone marrow is made up of hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells, fat cells, and supporting tissues that aid the growth of hematopoietic cells. It contains pluripotent stem cells that continually reproduce to form new cells. Some of these new cells remain as stem cells while others go through a series of changes. During this process, pluripotent stem cells stop reproducing and eventually become either lymphoid cells or hematopoietic stem cells. The hematopoietic stem cells also can divide and form new hematopoietic stem cells or develop into one of the three main types of blood cells - red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.

British researchers suspect better living standards linked to childhood leukemia
LONDON (Reuters) Leukemia cases among young British children are increasing and doctors suspect improved living standards could be the cause. Youngsters are exposed to fewer common infections than they used to be so their immune systems are weaker and not as good at combating illnesses, British researchers said on Friday.

In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. The immature white blood cells are called leukocytes. In some individuals, leukocytes are so numerous that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. The ability to fight infection decreases because the leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen liver , and the brain , and spinal cord.

Childhood leukemia - genetic mistake and unknown trigger
By LONDON, England (Reuters) Childhood leukemia is caused by a genetic abnormality that is present in one percent of healthy babies and a second unknown trigger that occurs some time after birth, British scientists said Monday. The genetic mistake is crucial but not sufficient on its own to cause the malignant blood disease.

Researchers: Pill has potential to destroy leukemia
The drug, STI-571, specifically targets an enzyme found only in leukemia cells NEW ORLEANS (CNN) An experimental cancer pill designed to combat chronic myelogenous leukemia, a common form of the adult cancer, has produced dramatic results in clinical trials and may have the potential to destroy most cancers, researchers reported Friday. The findings are being presented in New Orleans, at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. In a study of 37 patients treated with the drug, code-named STI-571, all of them had complete normalization of their blood counts, signaling a remission of their leukemia.

The term leukemia refers to cancers of the white blood cells, which are also referred to as leukocytes or WBC s. When a child has leukemia, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. These abnormal white cells crowd the bone marrow and flood the bloodstream, but they cannot perform their proper role of protecting the body against disease because they are defective.
As leukemia progresses, the cancer interferes with the body's production of other types of blood cells, including red blood cells and platelets. This results in anemia (low numbers of red cells) and bleeding problems, in addition to the increased risk of infection caused by white cell abnormalities. As a group, leukemias account for about 25% of all childhood cancers and affect about 2,200 American young people each year. Luckily, the chances for a cure are very good with leukemia. With treatment, most children with leukemia are free of the disease without it coming back. Types of Childhood Leukemia
In general, leukemias are classified into
