Study: Lingering cancer cells ominous sign in childhood leukemia
August 27, 1998
Web posted at: 1:46 p.m. EDT (1746 GMT) BOSTON (AP) Even small numbers of lingering cancer cells can be an ominous sign in children who have undergone seemingly successful treatment for leukemia, a study found. Generally, children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia are considered to be in remission when doctors cannot see any cancerous cells in their bone marrow when looking through a microscope. However, a genetic-fingerprinting technique called PCR, for polymerase chain reaction, can spot as few as five cancer cells in every 100,000 cells. Using this test, doctors examined 178 children who appeared to be in remission after undergoing chemotherapy, and detected traces of cancer in 42 percent of them. During three years of follow-up, 8 percent of those who appeared cancer-free on the PCR test suffered a relapse, compared with 40 percent of those who showed traces of disease.
