It is true that diet plays a big role in most cancers as does heredity. However, with leukemia, diet has not been shown to be a factor.

Cancer
My father has pancreatic cancer and someone sent me an e-mail saying that vitamin B 17 is the cure for cancer, but that the FDA has banned this . Do you know anything about this? Would you please help me? Or try to send me in the right direction? Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to offer.
There is no such vitamin B 17. Unfortunately the FDA does not regulate supplement companies and they can still make wild, outlandish health statements. Recently, legislation was pending to prevent this, but thanks to deep pocketed supplement company lobbyists, the legislation was greatly weakened. Often, I don't even recognize the ingredients on labels of supplements as being a nutrient for which there is a substantiated need for by humans. I would encourage your dad talk to a Registered Dietitian who can review his chart and make specific recommendations for pancreatic cancer. Generally, persons with pancreatic cancer need to limit fat and moderate protein as your pancreas makes enzymes that are used in the digestion of these nutrients. It is very important that your dad snack frequently to maintain his weight especially if he is having radiation or chemotherapy.

Leukemia is cancer that originates in the bone marrow, the soft, spongy inner portion of certain bones. Leukemia develops when a leukocyte (white blood cell) transforms into a malignant cell that multiplies uncontrollably, thereby crowding out the normal blood cells. About 31,500 new cases of leukemia were diagnosed in the United States in 2001.

Researchers are beginning to wonder if the spice turmeric, common in the Asian diet, could be the reason behind the lower rates of childhood leukemia in Asia. And they've found that oranges and bananas can reduce leukemia risk for children. One study at Loyola University in Chicago found that curcuminthe compound that gives turmeric its yellow colorprevents leukemia cells from multiplying in human cell cultures.

Member posted 07-08-2005 10:41 PM Hi all, Do you know of anyone who switched to an all raw food diet to try to manage or cure their cancer? It's a pretty radical diet, but I know someone who has been on it for 3 years. He did it to overcome allergies and overweight, which it did improve markedly.
He has to have a B12 supplement, because it's absent in that diet.

Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese Diet
My latest blood count is 26,400. I have been using the Budwig diet for about 8 months but for breakfast only. In an attempt to decrease my white blood count I have decided to observe the Budwig protocol in its entirety. The diet is centered on a 1:2 ratio of flaxseed oil to cottage cheese (1/4 cup cottage cheese for each tablespoon flaxseed oil). I take 1/2 cup cottage cheese with 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil and mix it thoroughly in a blender. Then I add some garlic and a piece of banana to improve the taste. I also sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed on the mixture. That and a 10-ounce glass of fresh carrot juice for breakfast and the same for supper along with some fresh, leafy vegetables and broccoli. I eat lots of nuts for snacks but no peanuts. My information on the diet was obtained from a great Yahoo Discussion Group - Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese . If you are interested in what the group is about then here is a link for you.

LEUKEMIA-HOW NEW WAY HEALS ONE FAST AND PERMANENTLY
By Dr. Bernarr, D.C., D.D..
WHAT IS LEUKEMIA?
Leukemia means "white blood" in Greek.
WHO GETS LEUKEMIA?
Leukemias effect about 9 in 100,000 people each year, and account for about 2% of all cancers. Approximately 27,500 new cases in adults and 2,500 in children are diagnosed annually in the United States, and the disease causes about 15,900 deaths a year. Males are affected twice as frequently as females. The overall five-year survival rate is 14 per cent.
HOW IS LEUKEMIA CLASSIFIED?
Leukemia is classified according to the predominant proliferating cells, the clinical course and the duration of the disease.
HOW DOES ACUTE LEUKEMIA EFFECT ONE?
HOW DOES CHRONIC LEUKEMIA EFFECT ONE?
Chronic leukemia comprises 50% in all cases of leukemia. Chronic leukemia develops slowly, and signs similar to those of the acute forms of the disease may not appear for years. Involved marrow may range in color from muddy red-brown to pale gray, and changes are usually first evident in the vertebrae, ribs, sternum and pelvis. Chronic myelocytic leukemia, also known as chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), may occur at any age in either sex; it is uncommon before 10 years of age, but occurs most often at the median age of 45. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), is a disease of the elderly, with 90% of cases occurring after age 50 and a median age at presentation of 65. A prognostically useful staging system has been developed as follows: stage 0, lymphocytosis only; stage 1, lymphocytosis plus lymphadenopathy; stage 2, organomegaly; stage 3, anemia; stage 4, thrombocytopenia.

Slide 2: Why should we think about the diet? You shouldn't be really too surprised that the diet is an area to look at. This is the causes of cancer death, the famous Doll and Pitot chart, with smoking responsible for about one-third of all cancers and this large green one here is diet, with poor diet being responsible also for about one-third of all cancers. So if you look at what may cause MDS, it is tobacco, alcohol and diet as the main factors with perhaps infection and viral agents also playing some sort of promotional role. TOP Slide 3: TOP Slide 4: A little bit about benzene and that is that benzene is metabolized to its two primary metabolites, phenol and hydroquinone and the pathway that appears to be important for benzene toxicity and leukemia induction is the transport of hydroquinone to the bone marrow, its activation to a quinone producing genetic damage and toxicity. Your main protection against this toxicity appears to be an enzyme called NQO1 or NADPH quinone oxidoreductase. TOP Slide 5: Together with Nat Rothman of the National Cancer Institute and colleagues in China, we showed that susceptibility to benzene hematotoxicity was related to a polymorphism in this enzyme NADPH quinone oxidoreductase or NQO1 and that people who lacked the activity of this enzyme were twofold to threefold more at risk of getting benzene toxicity than controls or people who had the normal levels of the enzyme. This suggested to us that maybe NQO1 is important in other forms of leukemia and hematotoxicity and

Increased girth raises risk of leukemia advertisement
Aug 03 (Reuters Health) - Greater body size significantly increases the risk of a type of blood cancer, myeloid leukemia, investigators from Australia report. "This study adds yet another cancer to the list where we have evidence of increased risk associated with obesity," Dr. Graham G. Giles from the Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne said. "Controlling the epidemic of obesity in western countries might have a beneficial effect on the population incidence of myeloid leukemia." Giles and colleagues studied data from a cohort of 40,909 adults who were followed for an average of 8.4 years. The incidence of myeloid leukemia was roughly five times higher among overweight and obese individuals than among individuals with normal or low weight, the researchers report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Specifically, the risk of myeloid leukemia increased 83 percent for every 10-kilogram increase in fat-free mass, and 35 percent per 10-centimeter increase in waist circumference.

To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us According to the National Cancer Institute, about one-third of all cancer deaths are related to malnutrition. For cancer patients, optimal nutrition is important. Cancer can deplete your body's nutrients and cause weight loss. Cancer and cancer treatment can also have a negative effect on your appetite, and your body's ability to digest foods. These factors may leave you in a vulnerable condition - high nutrient need, and low nutrient intake. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we believe that nutrition plays an important role in the treatment of cancer. That's why each patient who comes to us for help receives a nutrition assessment and an individualized plan designed to prevent malnutrition, reduce side effects and enhance his or her overall well being. Our Mission The CTCA nutrition program provides quality care for you through assessment, education, supplementation and support. This mission is achieved through the assessment of your risk for malnutrition, and the implementation of an individualized nutrition plan.
